Du suchst Spannung? Bring sie am besten selbst mit. Es gibt Gefahr, theoretisch. Es gibt Geheimnisse, angeblich. Und der Großteil der Konflikte hätte sich mit einem einzigen ehrlichen Gespräch lösen lassen, aber Kommunikation ist in diesem Universum offenbar streng verboten. In dieser Geschichte bekommt man eine leichte Prise Trauma und eine Romance, die von null auf „Oh. Wir sind jetzt verliebt?“ in ungefähr drei Werktagen springt. Kein Slow Burn, kein Knistern, einfach direkt auf volle Hitze und trotzdem irgendwie nicht ganz durchgegart. Es ist schnell. Es ist trocken. Es ist theoretisch dramatisch. Und irgendwie… hätte es mich kaum weniger interessieren können.
I went into this book completely blind, and I must admit it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize this is a Snow White retelling. To be fair though, it's only loosely inspired, as it has Snow, apples, mirrors, a King and Queen...
T. Kingfisher brings so much original worldbuilding into this, along with really enjoyable and in parts surprising characters. Anja is the FMC, a socially awkward and somewhat sarcastic Healer specialized in poisons... I mean, antidotes. The King brings her to his castle to find out if his daughter Snow is being poisoned. What unravels there is really unexpected, somewhat dark but also very humorous in the kind of tone only T. Kingfisher can provide. Among a couple of side characters there is also a talking cat that is really enjoyable. The author's books are a bit hit or miss for me, but this one I really really loved. Das war einfach fantastisch! Ich glaube wirklich ich habe in T. Kingfisher jetzt meine neue Lieblingsautorin gefunden. Am Anfang brauchte ich zwar etwas um mich an Anja's Art zu denken zu gewöhnen, aber als ich dann drin war hat die Story mich komplett in ihrem Bann gezogen.
🌟🌟🌟🌟.5 🌶️ Ein weiteres Buch von T. Kingfisher und wie immer hat sie mich, auf ganz eigene Art, begeistert! Die ersten 50% ging die Story nur sehr langsam vorwärts und es hat ein wenig der gewohnte Humor von T. Kingfisher gefehlt, aber in den letzten 50% hat mich das Buch einfach überzeugt. Auf einmal war da wieder der typische trockene Humor und auch ein bisschen was von der bekannten Situationskomik. Es gab düstere und verstörende Details, Spannung, unendlich viele offene Fragen und eine kleine, zarte und subtile Romance. Der Anfang des Buchs hätte ruhig ein wenig mehr Spannung vertragen oder einfach kürzer sein können, dafür ein wenig mehr vom spannenden Teil, in dem die offenen Fragen nach und nach aufgeklärt wurden. Die „Magie“ der Spiegel und der Spiegelwelt hat mich einfach begeistert und ich mochte, dass das Buch eine Fantasy-Mystery war, in der ich die ganze Zeit mit gerätselt habe, was hinter Snows Vergiftung und den Motiven dafür gesteckt hat. Anja war eine interessante Protagonistin, vorallem mit ihrer Obsession für Gifte aller Art. Javier als grumpy Bodyguard hat einfach alle Klischees erfüllt und war unfassbar süß. Ingesamt war es mal wieder ein sehr gutes Buch, auch wenn es für ein Buch von T. Kingfisher eher eins der schwächeren Bücher war.
I really love the writing style of Kingfisher! I love that her protagonist is a 35 year old women that is kinda nerdy and can talk to a cat. This new spin on an old tale was really well done and was gripping till the very end. The story unfolds slowly, but I was never bored. I truly enjoyed the inner dialogue of Anja. It is very clear that the author really researched poisons and antidotes. Also, she has some real understanding how tedious science can be, how difficult it is to find cures by trial and error. I always feel that an author can only write characters that are similarly knowledgeable and smart as themselves. So here it really shines through how much Kingfisher knows herself and how much research she put into this. I really, really appreciate and love that!
