Enter a cold, silent forest and find out what feasts at night in this new gothic tale from bestselling and award-winning author T. Kingfisher, set in the world of What Moves the Dead.
*A very special hardcover edition, featuring a foil stamp on the casing and custom endpapers illustrated by the author.*
After their terrifying ordeal at the Usher manor, Alex Easton feels as if they just survived another war. All they crave is rest, routine, and sunshine, but instead, as a favor to Angus and Miss Potter, they find themself heading to their family hunting lodge, deep in the cold, damp forests of their home country, Gallacia.
In theory, one can find relaxation in even the coldest and dampest of Gallacian autumns, but when Easton arrives, they find the caretaker dead, the lodge in disarray, and the grounds troubled by a strange, uncanny silence. The villagers whisper that a breath-stealing monster from folklore has taken up residence in Easton's home. Easton knows better than to put too much stock in local superstitions, but they can tell that something is not quite right in their home. . . or in their dreams.

'It's just a dream.'
Isolation. Silence. Dreams are not an escape.
I really loved What Feasts At Night! This book gives the reader an exploration of Alex' homeland, the fictional european country Gallacia. There is nothing special to see there, according to Alex. They're just there to do a friend a favour. Of course, they end up in yet another horrible situation, as usual. Familiar faces return and aid Alex in their struggles and adventures. Although in this story, Alex is definitely more isolated than in the rest of the series. Kingfisher explores how a person can become estranged from a place, land, and people. Be it through military duty or the simple act of not frequenting a place for a very long time, and thus becoming an outsider to local folk. I enjoyed the isolated atmosphere of this place. The eerie silence and the growing suspicion that something is very wrong. I've seen others say that book 2 is not quite as good as book 1. I personally enjoyed it just a bit more than the first book! Whereas book 1 was an introduction to the world and characters, book 2 reunites us with the already familiar faces. Their antics are known, and their relationships deepen. I loved coming back to these characters. Most importantly, I found the danger present in this book much more threatening than what Alex had to face in book 1. The stakes were high, and the options to solve the problem seemed non-existent. I loved the discussion of natural phenomenons and supernatural occurrences. As stubborn as Alex' opinion seemed, they weren't wrong.

A very short read if anyone is looking for a creepy tale to bridge the gap between two books. I don’t think you necessarily have to have read book 1, although it would be helpful regarding the special pronouns that are used in Gallacia. There is no specific explanation in this book regarding that, so it might be confusing when you come across it for the very first time. Kingfisher never disappoints, I love the sense of humor and the down to earth way of telling a story. The characters are no heroes with special powers, they are only human and it shows. They deal with creepy things just like I would and react in a way that is easy to understand and feels natural. Featured in this story is a surprising death, a weird illness and a folk tale fueling nightmares and superstition - or ist it really just a tale? Is everything that is happening just a weitd coincidence? Kingfisher leaves that to the reader.
