Eine sehr spannend und interessant erzählte Geschichte, die viel Raum für die eigenen Gedanken und Interpretationen lässt. Und ein Einblick in die Psyche der Hauptfigur, der die Zuverlässigkeit der kompletten Erzählung zumindest in Frage stellen lässt.
One of the books, I do not really understand - and still liked it very much. I liked the sensualism of the style (Area X and also the pool and the tide pooles in the biologist's past were described so vivid!) and I also liked the mystery. I'm not sure, if I'm looking forward to volume 2 and 3. I'm afraid, any attempts at resolving the mystery will fail and destroy my positive impression. I feel remembered on Picknick at Hanging Rock. Also there, the additional explanatory chapter destroyed everything...
Immer wieder gerne gelesen. Annihilation ist eins der besten science fiction Bücher überhaupt. Die Biologin ist eine ungewöhnliche und unglaublich interessante Sichtweise. Ihre Faszination mit area x überträgt sich dadurch sehr leicht auf den Leser. Auch die späteren Einblicke in ihren Charakter zeigen eine Protagonistin, die ich sonst so noch nicht gefunden habe und einige Zitate bleiben mir bis heute im Kopf. Ein paar Momente von horror sind ebenfalls enthalten, insbesondere da ich persönlich Doppelgänger sehr gruselig finde. Es hat im Vergleich zu den restlichen Büchern der Serie aber noch am wenigstens horror. Hier lernt man erstmal area x überhaupt kennen. Ein unglaublich guter Beginn einer unglaublich guten Serie. Ich kann in diesem Atemzug auch die restlichen Bücher der southern reach Trilogie nur empfehlen!
Not bad in general - but I was surprised the book is only about 10 years old. It read more like something from the 80s or 90s (and was just as diverse, sadly ^^'). I kind of feel this one merely passed the Bechdel test because the twelfth expedition had only female participants... Which feels a bit like cheating and is interesting when considering that most dialogues are still with the biologist's dead husband, in reminiscences.
I love eco horror so much
This book is amazing. I love the writing and the concept of it. Area X is fascinating. I totally get the main character. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're a fan of eco horror, you HAVE to read this one. It's part of a trilogy, and I am, maybe even for the first time, so happy that I have the other two books at home already 😭
Von Jeff VanderMeers Southern Reach-Reihe habe ich schon viel Positives gehört und natürlich wurde ich mit jedem Mal neugieriger. Dennoch wusste ich nicht, worauf ich mich einliess, als ich mich dem Hörbuch zu Teil eins zuwandte. Lange dauerte es aber nicht und ich war hin und weg, konnte all die positiven Stimmen verstehen. Das Buch lebt durch seine Atmosphäre, durch seine Dichte und dieses unbestimmte Gefühl drohender Gefahr. Ich liebe sowas. Es sind die Details, die kleinen Dinge, die dieses Buch so lebendig werden lassen, einen reinziehen in diese Zone, diese seltsame Welt. Am liebsten würde ich gleich weiterhören, aber das lasse ich sein, aufgrund der Befürchtung, mir dann sozusagen den Magen zu verderben. Deshalb warte nich nun ein wenig ab, bevor nich mich erneut in diese faszinierende, aber drohenden Welt wage. Ich freu mich jetzt schon.

The first book is such a tease. A book with a touch of "Lost" mysteries and Lovecraft horror. Very entertainingly written as a journal from a expedition member on their mission to the ominous Area X. The first person voice, a biologist, is very well done and totally worked for me. The worldbuilding is excellent and told in such a way, that you have more questions, than answers in the end. That's why I would recommend you wait until the end of the year to read all three books in a row, but if you love-hate this type of waiting for the next release, like me, go read it now! It's also very short, so what are you waiting for?
Annihilation ist eines dieser Bücher bei denen es mir sehr schwer fällt mich auf eine Bewertung festzulegen. Einerseits habe ich das Buch nämlich eigentlich echt gern gelesen. Der Schreibstil von Jeff VanderMeer hat mir wirklich gut gefallen, ich fand die Idee spannend und die mysteriöse Atmosphäre von Area X war faszinierend. Andererseits hat mich das Buch auch echt frustriert. Im Buch werden unglaublich viele Fragen aufgeworfen und keine einzige davon wird beantwortet. Das Buch ist ziemlich kurz und ich weiss, dass es noch zwei weitere Teile in der Reihe gibt, aber ehrlich gesagt habe ich keine Lust weiter zu lesen, wenn am Ende des ersten Teils einzig ein grosses Fragezeichen zurück bleibt. Zudem scheinen in den anderen Teilen auch andere Figuren im Zentrum zu stehen, weshalb ich ziemlich sicher bin, dass einige der Fragen auch dort nicht beantwortet werden (einige Dinge schienen irgendwie auch einfach unlogisch). Natürlich trägt es zum Reiz von Area X bei, dass man nicht wirklich weiss was dort vor sich geht, doch zumindest ein paar Antworten, auch zu dem ganzen Zweck der Mission dorthin, hätte ich schon erwartet. Dennoch, wie schon gesagt, fand ich die Grundidee spannend und auch die Figuren waren interessant, auch wenn die Hauptfigur super unsympathisch war und ich über die anderen Figuren gerne noch etwas mehr erfahren hätte. Abschliessend kann ich sagen, ich fand die Idee der Geschichte gut, der Schreibstil war super, aber das Buch hätte gerne etwas länger sein dürfen wenn man dafür ein paar Antworten erhalten und vielleicht auch noch etwas mehr über die Nebenfiguren erfahren hätte.
Maybe expecting answers in a genre defined by themes of the limits of knowledge and the (capital U) Unknown wasn’t exactly wise… Anyway, this is a story about unbridgeable distances between people, the fact that loss doesn’t always come with answers, and a whole lot of questioning what just happened—and whether it really happened like that. I’m sure people who like surreal mysteries with a touch of Lovecraft and Carl Jung-Fans will have a field day with this. I feel like I should have been terrified by some of the things in this book, but instead I am left with a sense of curiosity and confusion. It feels like there is something missing, even taking into consideration that this is only book 1 of 3. But having said that, the length makes this an enjoyable read though it may not be for everyone due to its cryptic nature.
