Description
In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.
Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.
Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together-and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past-even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.

This book absolutely broke me. Awesome!
I finally made it through this chunk of a book and what a ride it has been. This, without a doubt, has to be my fave book of the series. I love it so much that I bought it a second time just to scribble in it. 𝚜𝚙𝚘𝚒𝚕𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚛𝚎𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚝 Even before I started this, I had a feeling it would be my fave book because Dalinar is one of my fave characters. This book felt like the world had just opened even further, and I completely sank into it. The character development for most of the group that we've been following was just phenomenal, and oh, the tears I cried. This book, to me, was also the first where the Flashbacks didn't pull me out of the flow. Instead, they felt like long needed explanations. Oathbringer launches us into the real good stuff (that's how I feel anyway) - to me it never felt like it dragged or slowed down too much - I mean yes this is slow paced but it was wonderful! In short: Just read this book series!! 🥹🤣 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 God, the tears I cried for Dalinar. I can't!! Watching him grow and evolve was just the greatest joy. I can not even put into words how much I cried in that sanderlanche. I predicted some of the stuff that did happen, I kind of knew that Dalinar would be perfect for Odium to corrupt, but boi, am I glad he pushed through it. "You can not have my pain" - that quote. It is forever engraved in my mind. However, what I never really saw coming was that the humans were the ones that invaded Roshar! That was a bloody nice twist. Also, I feel robbed of Elokhars Lightweaver journey - which to me had enormous potential! But I am glad to finally see Jasnah be queen, as I predicted from book one she would be. However I also took issue with two things: the fucking love triangle. I was about to write a very angry email to sanderson and tell him to stop this shit, but then it solved itself. It was good that Shallan finally talked about it and stopped it. And her whole personality switching got to a point where I couldn't deal with it anymore. 😅 Could talk more about all of it for hours. 😂

Like the other books in the Stormlight Archive series, Oathbringer has a familiar structure: a slower, more deliberate start that gently reminds you of the sprawling cast and complex web of plots, building patiently until it suddenly grabs you by the throat. My usual 60 pages a day suddenly turned into 300. The stakes escalate dramatically, revelations pile upon revelations and the world of Roshar and the Cosmere continues to expand in unexpected ways. The war for Roshar intensifies as ancient forces awaken fully. Dalinar Kholin is struggling to unite the fractured nations of the world against an overwhelming threat while confronting the ghosts of his own bloody past. Shallan delves deeper into her multiple identities and the secrets of the Ghostbloods, while Kaladin faces new challenges in his role as leader. Meanwhile, the Parshmen make their move and the true history of the Knights Radiant begins to emerge. The characters remain at the heart of it all. Sanderson continues to tackle heavy themes such as trauma, depression, guilt and addiction with sincerity, making these characters feel achingly real. Dalinar's journey and backstory, as well as Shallan's confrontation with her conflicting identities, are masterclasses in character development. Finally, Shallan and Adolin's romance is believable, which is a first for a Brandon Sanderson book. After my mixed feelings about the romantic elements in Words of Radiance and especially Mistborn, I was genuinely impressed here. It feels earned and natural, adding to the characters rather than distracting from them or the plot itself. I still get confused sometimes. Terms are thrown around, events, objects or characters are referenced, and I often found myself sitting there with a massive question mark above my head. This may be partly due to our decision not to follow the recommended Cosmere reading order, skipping short stories such as Edgedancer along the way. I have read Mistborn: Secret History and Warbreaker, and I've caught numerous references to them, so I'm certain I've missed connections to other stories, such as Elantris or the other two books in the Mistborn era. But honestly? It hasn't diminished my enjoyment. If anything, it adds to the sense that the universe is far larger than what's on the page, with secrets waiting to be uncovered in future books. This series is quietly cementing itself as one of my all-time favourites. And knowing that the overarching Cosmere connections will only grow stronger from here? I can't wait to dive into the next one.

What to say? Only the book was awesome!!! My favourite part was part 3, not only because there was Wit again (I love him so much), but also I loved how they interacted with each other. I even got nightmares because of Kaladin’s break down during the battle in the castle. And then there was MOASH! You little shit. What is wrong with you? I know you wanted to kill Elhokar but not like this. I loved how Kaladin and Adolin behaved with each other. I did even like Shallan, but I started to cringe as soon she swooned over Kaladin, like, why girl? Also I don’t buy it, that she’s really in love with Adolin because we never really got her feelings for him? (Maybe I just missed it that could be too.) Yes, I know I’m mostly alone with this opinion but I still ship Kaladin with Adolin (don’t judge me). I mean they have both so much chemistry and if I don’t knew it better the book felt like until part 4 how Kaladin felt in love with Adolin... (Okay I’ll stop it here, please pretend you never read about my shipper heart, thanks.) Anyway, I just so happy that the silly love triangle is finally over. We know this book is awesome and everything but there was some stuff I didn’t like: - Ehm we all know Adolin killed Sadeas and I thought it would turn into interesting drama and stuff, but nothing? Absolutely nothing? It was disappointing. - Love triangle – I don’t say more - Sometimes the politic stuff was really hard to read because I didn’t find it quite interesting I absolutely loved: - Bridge 4 – Gosh I love them and they love Kaladin and everything is just beautiful - WIT / HOID - The last 200 pages, gosh was this battle epic - Oh remember that one woman who rolled her eyes at Adolin and Shallan? I sadly forgot her name but same, my girl, same. I’m sure I forgot a lot of things to mention (maybe I should start taking some notes during reading), but I really love this series and I hope it will stay awesome.
Prvo moram ovo napisati. Sanderson nije normalan. Covjek. nije. normalan. To rijetki znaju uraditi. Szeth, Renarin, Tavangarian, Bridge 4, Moash... Moash did nothing wrong.
There are no words capable of describing this experience Most importantly how dare you Brandon? Especially chapters I-3, 37, 43, 75, 76, 84, 91, 94(!), 100(!!!), 117, 118(!!), 119!!!!!, 120(!) are terrible and perfect and awful I love Dalinar so much I will start crying just thinking about him I have approximately 150 quotes marked and I can’t choose any favorites I want to put here… I just keep thinking of more and more and more But still I need to write down some of them 5/8 are about Dalinar and that truly says it all “I used to take the terrible things that happened to me, as proof that there was no god. Then in some of my darkest moments, I took my life as proof there must be something up there, for only intentional cruelty could offer an explanation” “But storms, it was either this or start killing again.” “The only honest officer in the army, the honorable soldier. Noble, like the Heralds themselves. Our father. The greatest man in Alethkar” “The most important step a man can take. It’s not the first one, is it. It’s the next one. Always the next step, Dalinar” “You cannot have my pain” “Maybe you don’t have to save anyone, Kaladin. Maybe it’s time for someone to save you “I will protect those I hate. Even….even if the one I hate most…is myself” “I forgive you”
I loved that we finally got a lot of time with Dalinar (his backstory is my favorite so far) and that the interludes are much shorter. The characterisation and world building excels again and I appreciate how both uncertain relationships were resolved without drama, even if that means feeling like the set up was not needed in the first place. The action, especially at the end, was extremely cineastic and well planned and there were some nice relevations. While the book was huge, there were quite a few things that could have needed more page time, like Renarin or that investigation that just fizzled out. Also, I wasn't all too interested in some of Shallans parts of the story. I like the idea and what it will probably mean for her character from now on, I just didn't care following Veil around. That are almost nitpicks, though. I really enjoy these books, they are just a bit too long.
Reread update: My love for stormlight is deep and it cements itself further with Oathbringer. In fact, this third installment is such a marvel of a book that I can safely say that there is, for me, no other book outside of the stormlight archive that is on par with it. The first three books of the series are almost equally brilliant and have their own aspects with which they distinguish themselves from each other. The Way of Kings stands as a highly imaginative introduction to the series that centers around a fantastical world fuelled with a dead god's magic that has shaped it and its inhabitants. It opens up a history filled with mystery and questions and deals with themes like depression, trauma and loss like no other entry in the genre. Words of Radiance does everything that The Way of Kings did and turns the volume up in most of its aspects. It has been my favourite book for a long time. Oathbringer's main appeal (those parts that aren't AS present in the other entries) are its worldbuilding and its main character: Dalinar Kholin. He might be my favourite character in any story across every medium and he clearly also seems to be Sanderson's teacher's pet (fun fact: he named his real life son ("Dalin") after Dalinar, which is pretty dope). What makes Dalinar interesting is that he represents both the best and the worst parts that are inherent in man. That's a really broad spectrum and the most important parts of it are, of course, the struggles. Sanderson has this very human, real and believable approach to writing about trauma, emotions and mental health difficulties that goes far beyond your stereotypical "he was scared, so he just toughened up and pulled through" - approach that focuses way more on the issue itself instead of the obvious solution. I have often felt like this before, but where many works of fiction seem like they try to write really rationally about emotion, Sanderson's feels way more therapeutic. He gives his characters the time and space to grieve, lets them truly feel every emotion to its fullest and then comes to a reflected conclusion. Characterwork is seldomly done like this in fiction and Sanderson is one of the best at it. So yeah, Oathbringer is pretty good. It might even be my favourite novel ever (though I think I won't be able to decide between it and Words of Radiance) and with Stormlight being my favourite story across every medium, it might be my favourite fictional work. I could write thousands of words more and although the journey stands before the destination I feel like I've blabbered enough, so let me end this with a quote by Dalinar that sums up the vibes I get from Oathbringer pretty accurately: "The ancient code of the Knights Radiant says "journey before destination." Some may call it a simple platitude, but it is far more. A journey will have pain and failure. It is not only the steps forward that we must accept. It is the stumbles. The trials. The knowledge that we will fail. That we hurt those around us. But if we stop, if we accept the person we are when we fall, the journey ends. That failure becomes our destination. To love the journey is to accept no such end. I have found, through painful experience, that the most important step a person can take is always the next one." oh and 5/5 btw duh
Oathbringer A deep, introspective book that takes its time but delivers some of the best character moments in the series. Dalinar’s past is brutal but incredibly well-written, and the final battle at Thaylen Field is breathtaking. Favorite Quotes: “I am Unity.” “You must let truths grow in your heart before you can expect to harvest them.”
Reading this book in two parts and over long stretches of time was not exactly ideal for me. However, Brandon Sanderson is a god with words and he managed to write it in a way that I always found it easy to come back into the book. This first part of Oathbringer felt like it was raising more questions than answers. I especially liked the prologue, again, because it gives yet another perspective on the event of the prologues from the other two books. There is also a lot of questioning regarding the "enemies", who are starting to appear less evil. It is just so unclear where everything is headed that it makes my fingers itch to turn each page! The character developments are also quite interesting, specifically those of Shallan and Kaladin. It seems that the responsibility of saving the world might weigh a bit too much on those two and it's just shown in such a good way! For example, Shallan's drawings, that can be seen throughout the book, tend to become less accurate and more wild. It also appears that she is drawing some of the more disturbing surrealistic pieces without knowing of them. That just makes her character more interesting (and quite a bit creepy)! The feeling of fear for the characters and the undeniable slow slide towards a catastrophe are, fortunately, lightened up by that great humor of Sanderson. I am so curious to see how this book, and the series as a whole, is going to end and I will try my hardest to read the second part of Oathbringer as slow as possible to cherish it!
“To love the journey is to accept no such end. I have found, through painful experience, that the most important step a person can take is always the next one.”
Comunque SPOILER. - - - - - - - - ALLORA PARLIAMONE. Va bene che nel secondo mi hai fatto partire la scimmia per Khaladin e Shallan, caro Sanderson, MA COME OSI ANCHE SOLO NON FARMI LEGGERE DEL MATRIMONIO DI SHALLAN E ADOLIN DOPO CHE MI HAI FATTO PARTIRE ANCHE PER LORO LA SHIP E DI CONSEGUENZA TRENTORDICIMILA INFARTI TRA LEI E LUI DURANTE LA BATTAGLIA FINALE CHE STAVO QUASI PER RIMANERCI SECCA IO, PER POI FARE IL MATRIMONIO IN FRATTA E FURIA E NEANCHE UNA RIGA DEL RICEVIMENTO, DI LORO E TUTTO RESTO! Tipo, non so: CHI HA COMISSIONATO IL SUO OMICIDIO E PERCHè HA INIZIATO A UCCIDERE TUTTI I REGNANITI DI ROSHAR????
So this book was a bit of a rollercoaster. At the 66% mark I kinda lost it: I know I know, Sanderson loves to take his time with telling a story, but Jesus, this book is such a drag! You know, I had difficulties with the first one as well, It took some time to establish everything especially since this is a world you have never seen before. But the characters grew on me, there was character growth and developments I really enjoyed and I was very intrigued to continue. Book 2 I loved, so many things were established and God so many good hooks were given. I felt like book 3 could deliver but all it did so far was ignore everything that happened. Jasnah is back from the dead: no big reaction. Shallans Mentor is back. The faux-death meant A LOT to Shallan. It changed EVERYTHING. But no reaction? None whatsoever? Shallan has a severe personality disorder: gets easily solved by wit (not TOGETHER with Jasnah, her mentor or Adolin her betrothed or Kaladin a possible love interest) Kaladin & Shallan: Well, I though the intimate scene in Book meant something. But they never react to each other apart from 2 lines every 300 pages here one is maybe pining a bit but nothing happens. Not even endearing moments. Like, there was one moment where Kaladin took Shallan flying but that happened OFF PAGE. WHY??? (Oh because it needed to be a plot device. I see.) Adolin: I love Adolin. I love him to bits. When book 2 ended, WHAT A GREAT HOOK?! I mean, the golden boy is stained now, what consequences will there be? Will affect his personality? Will it effect the political climate? I tell you what: no. Nothing f***** happens and apart from in the beginning he barery gives a thought. What about the ryshadium? It is established he has a special connection to his horse, it died and now there aren’t any horses mentioned at all anymore. He wans‘t stupid. Now he feels so much like it. Lift: I. JUST. HATE. HER. She is not funny. She just is stupid and annoying. Adolin & Shallan: Why isn‘t their engagement going anywhere? Why isn‘t it mentioned? Why don‘t they talk about it anymore? (Oh because it needed to be a plot device. I see.) Teft: so apparently he is addicted, but you only hear about it in one little chapter and then NEVER again. Why? (Oh because it needed to be a plot device. I see.) Rock: So, he can be a soldier? Meets up with his family and wants to leave bridge 4 and then: Nothing. You barely see him after that. It‘s not like he is already gone. No. He is still in bridge 4 but it‘s just silent around him. Mraiz and Shallans Brothers: Nothing happens. No pressure. No consequences. Nothing. WHY? AND WHAT ABOUT ALL THE HIGH PRINCES? WHAT ABOUT AMARAM? EVERYTHING IS JUST TOO MUCH. (Oh because it needed to be a plot device. I see.) I am interested in Character-driven storylines. Everything in this book is just TOO BIG. Too many side-characters that I just don‘t care for anymore. Why can‘t we continue establishing the ones we have already (which still are SO many!) Why is WIT there? He is nothing but a fast way to help characters grow but I would love to see helping each other out, building trust, FEELING things, but no, they only resolve things for them selfs like islands, untouchable for everyone. This just feels shallow. Interludes. Why the F**** HELL. I don’t care for them. I don’t care for the characters mentioned in the interludes. It disrupts the flow of reading. And everytime there is a climax in the plot: Interludes. Whe jump 3-5 times to whoever and that does take the momentum out of everything. It is so frustrating, especially when you try to get through a 1200 page junker and the main plot ALREADY drags along like hell. I feel robbed. There were so many possible opportunities for growth for ALL the characters but for whatever reason, they continue living without giving another thought. When they „grow“ it doesn’t feel earned, because yes you see them struggle but in a very sudden and convenient moment everything resolves and isn‘t mentioned anymore. Why aren‘t the radiants talking to each other? I am so sad because it COULD have been so good. Now that I finished it, I can say, he still got around and got me hooked because he knows how to write endings and twists. But nonetheless, it was so far the weakest of the Stormlight books I feel. I will continue though, since I am still invested. Sort of.

Sort of.
