I've been shaking my head and asking the universe "why??" a couple of times during certain plotlines in the Creeping Shadow and there were certainly times I questioned narrative choices or choices made by characters BUT as weird as the last twist was, that "bomb" dropped (too soon?) at the end really did it for me. It has been long since a cliffhanger has done me this dirty so 4* with good conscience. There were some pretty weird plotlines thrown in but there's only one book left in the series so I guess if it's gonna get wild, you gotta start eventually. I've got loads of questions and expectations for the last book (in a good way) and I'm actually excited. Wish I could've read this series as a teenager. 15yo me would've loved Skull.

Bereits in den ersten drei Büchern traten die drei jungen Gespensterjäger Jonathan, George und Lucy unheimlichen Gestalten und seltsamen Wesen tapfer entgegen. Erneut stehen sie einem schrecklichen Verbrechen gegenüber, das seinen Ursprung in der Geisterwelt zu haben scheint. Unerschrocken stellen sie sich der neuen Aufgabe und begeben sich dabei in große Gefahr. Jonathan Stroud ist ein Garant für gute Unterhaltung, so auch hier. Es macht Spaß, den drei Protagonisten auf ihren Abenteuern zu folgen, mit ihnen zu fiebern und zwischendurch vom sarkastischen Totenschädel (der Begleiter der Agentin Lucy) auf den Boden der tatsachen gebracht zu werden. Alle Figuren sind facettenreich und wachsen stets an ihren Herausforderungen, man kann sehr deutlich über alle Bände hinweg eine Entwicklung der Charaktere verfolgen. Sprachlich sind die Bücher von Stroud ein wahres Feuerwerk. Zwar schreibt er in erster Linie für Kinder und Jugendliche, doch so einfach sich die Story auch liest, so detailiert und abwechslungsreich ist sein Stil. Ich finde es immer wieder erstaunlich, wie viele unterschiedliche Wörter er nutzt, um ähnliche Situationen zu beschreiben. Es macht unheimlich viel Spaß, in die Geschichte einzutauchen und sich mitreißen zu lassen. Unbedingt "Lockwood & Co" lesen und/oder verschenken!

I have been a huge fan of the Lockwood series but the fourth installment wasn't able to grab me completely. I don't know if it is the book or if it is an language issue. I've read the first three books in the German translation and loved the atmospheric and sometimes even creepy scenery. This is what I missed the most in The Creeping Shadow. I missed the atmosphere, it was hardly ever creepy. The story was kind of dragging for me and I was even bored at times. The ghost hunts were hardly suspenseful and everything felt just wrong. Maybe it is the different set-up of the characters. Though I still liked everyone of them, especially the skull, I wasn't overwhelmed as I have been with the other books.
"Das Flammende Phantom" ist der vierte Band von Jonathan Strouds Reihe um "Lockwood & Co." und spielt einige Zeit nach den Ereignissen von "Die raunende Maske". Vom Aufbau her unterscheidet sich diese Geschichte nicht sonderlich von den anderen Büchern, wie immer ist es Lucy, die uns ihre Geschichte in gewohnter Weise erzählt. Dabei wirkt sie sympathisch und auch ihre Figur ist gut ausgearbeitet. Sie ist keine übertriebene Heldin, sondern ein junges Mädchen auf der Suche nach einem Platz in ihrem Leben. Inhaltlich gibt es dieses Mal einiges zu erleben, auch wenn das titelgebende Phantom erst gegen Ende auftaucht. Zuvor steht das Zwischenmenschliche im Vordergrund, vor allem die Beziehung zwischen Lockwood und Lucy. Dabei kracht es aber natürlich wie wir es bereits kennen. Eine rasante Szene jagt die nächste, dazwischen wird Tee getrunken und schon ist das Team wieder unterwegs. Unterdessen habe ich mich von der Jugendliteratur verabschiedet, also kann man es Stroud hoch anrechnen, dass ich dennoch meinen Spass mit dem Buch hatte. Ich bin nicht mehr derart begeistert wie noch vor einigen Jahren, aber im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Jugendbüchern, die mich bloss noch langweilen, fand ich "Das Flammende Phantom" äusserst kurzweilig. Deswegen werde ich diese Reihe noch fertig lesen, da sie demnächst abgeschlossen sein wird.
My favourite book in the whole series. These books were only getting better and better and I'm honestly so sad that the next book will be the last. I wish there was more of this world I have fallen in love with. No spoilers, but what I can say about the ending of this book is: It was so amazing and chilling that I didn't recap it to my friend and told him: You know what, nah, read it yourself. I'm not eloquent enough to give you the same feeling reading this gave me. If you don't want to read the other books, at least read this one because the last few chapters were insane!
