What a trilogy!
I guess the only missing star for me was still the fact that I do not get how Stevie figured out who it was. It just did not make much sense to me. But maybe because I am not Sherlock. But talking about the book. It was like being presented puzzle pieces in the beginning, and you think you have it all sorted out. But then a couple of puzzle pieces appear in the next chapters and you have to look at things differently. From the beginning of the books I really thought Nate and/or Janelle were sketchy. But they were fine. And every new character that got introduced was sketchy to me. Clearly I was not made out to be Sherlock.
when I started the truly devious series I didnt know a lot about it besides that it played in a sort of boarding school and there was a detective-girl & this apparently was enough for me to go buy it and read it. I was sure I would ENJOY the book but I never thought this series would mean this much to me. while I loved the plot and the characters and THE SETTING those are still not the reasons why the books will forever have a special place in my heart. It is just the simple fact that our main character is suffering from regular anxiety & panic attacks and it is the first time in my life that I have read a book where this is the case. It just made me feel so at home, so understood and SO GOOD. my mom read the first book shortly after I did and she as well came to my room totally in shock and was like: WOW the main character has panic attacks! I've never read something like this before!! I'll be forever grateful to Maureen Johnson for giving me and many other people such a special place in her books & for making me really grasp how important it is to create DIVERSE books & characters that can speak to all sorts of people and create a much more realistic picture of the society we live in. ______this series is by no means perfect in every single way, there were some times that felt like plotconveniences and just other stuff that was.. well just a big convenience. I've been realizing for some time now that the whole booktube thing has changed the way I experience things, whereas in the past I would just enjoy the ride I now think about if the plot is well built, if the characters are consistent & so on. while there is nothing bad about recognizing those little things I feel like its been hindering me to really enjoy a book. so I am now making a conscious decision to JUST ENJOY BOOKS.
4.5 ⭐️ Definitely preferred book 3 to the second one in the Truly Devious series. Finally everything is solved, we get a bit of romance action (although I wasn’t needing it but oh well) and the solution is surprising but also kinda like I expected it? It’s definitely a build up you can easily follow and makes sense. Overall I truly recommend this series and I will definitely read the 4th book, which is a separate adventure from Stevie
Eine Murder-Mystery-Story, die mich absolut in ihren Bann gezogen hat! - Teil 3 Der Schreibstil von Maureen Johnson konnte mich wieder wirklich von sich überzeugen und das obwohl die Er-/ Sie-Perspektive normalerweise nicht mein Favorit ist. Er war meiner Meinung nach sehr angenehm zu lesen, hat einen guten Einblick in das Gefühlsleben der Protagonistin ermöglicht und hat einen direkt mitgerissen, sodass ich gar nicht mehr aufhören konnte zu lesen. Auch ein wenig Sarkasmus kam dabei nicht zu Kurz, wodurch ich ab und an wirklich schmunzeln musste. Die Ellingham Academy hat mich wieder absolut verzaubert. Sie vermittelt eine unglaublich mystische und magische Atmosphäre. Diese wird besonders in diesem Band aber auch zunehmend düsterer und eigentlich schon fast gruselig. Unzählige Geheimgänge, ein sehr außergewöhnliches Unterrichtskonzept und natürlich ein paar Todesfälle, die auch noch Jahre später ungeklärt sind, ein paar weitere aktuelle und eine verschwundene Schülerin. Spannender geht es wohl kaum! Die Protagonistin, Stevie Bell setzt wieder alles daran, die Geheimnisse um die Mordfälle von damals und heute zu lüften. Die hängen nämlich enger miteinander zusammen, als man zunächst denken man. Ich liebe Stevie einfach. Sie war einfach wundervoll, unglaublich toll und mega sympathisch. Sie ist sehr neugierig, aber auch ehrgeizig und gibt demnach ihr Bestes, um diese Fälle zu lösen. Dabei kommt ihr natürlich zu Gute, dass sie absolute Expertin im Bereich von True Crime, Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie und natürlich allem, was über Truly Devious bereits bekannt ist. Sie wirkt auf mich sehr intelligent und stellt für mich eine wirklich großartige Nachwuchs-Detektivin dar, weil sie auch vor möglichen Gefahren nicht zurückschteckt, wenn sie so der Wahrheit ein Stück näher kommen könnte. Ich bewundere ihr Durchhaltevermögen und die Fähigkeit, all die kleinen Hinweise zu einem großen Ganzen zu kombinieren Ihre Mitschüler machen ihre Geschichte dann noch um einiges bunter und besonderer. David mit dem miesen Vater, der unglaublich gutaussehend ist, aber auch oft Probleme macht, Janelle, die Maschinen baut, Nate, der eigentlich ein weiteres Buch schreiben sollte, aber alles tut, um dass eben nicht zu tun, Vi, Janelles Partner*in und Hunter, der Neffe von der nun toten Dr. Fenton. Sie alle sind absolut außergewöhnliche, kleine Nerds, die man einfach nur ins Herz schließen kann. Sie alle sind unglaublich besonders, teilweise etwas verrückt, aber auf jeden Fall einfach nur liebenswert. Auch alle anderen Nebencharaktere wirkten sehr nahbar, wenn auch manchmal leicht verrückt und exzentrisch. Trotzdem tragen sie wahrscheinlich genau wegen ihrer Eigenarten auf sehr positive Weise zur Geschichte bei. In dem Buch werden wieder zwei Handlungsstränge miteinander verbunden. Neben Stevies Geschichte, erfährt man zugleich, was damals zur Zeit des Mordes, sowie davor und danach, passiert ist. Meiner Meinung nach hatte dieser zweite Handlungsstrang die Geschichte wirklich toll ergänzt und sie noch spannender gemacht, da man so mit Stevie auf die Suche nach Hinweisen gehen konnte und gleichzeitig erfährt, wie es wirklich abgelaufen ist. Allgemein fand ich die Geschichte wieder unglaublich spannend. Ich konnte das Buch kaum zur Seite legen. Man kann gar nicht anders, als selbst anzufangen zu rätseln und mit Stevie mitzufiebern. Man möchte unbedingt wissen, wie es weitergeht und verliert sich richtig in der Geschichte. Das Ende fand ich dieses Mal allerdings ein wenig zu vorhersehbar, wobei eine Schlussfolgerung von Steve ein Fragezeichen in meinem Kopf hinterlassen hat. Als Leser hat man diese Information nämlich anhand des Handlungsstranges in der Vergangenheit erfahren. Stevie hat allerdings in ihrem Teil der Geschichte nie für den Leser sichtbar davon erfahren. Wie kommt sie also an diese Information, die ihr geholfen hat, den Fall letztendlich lösen zu können? Auch die Liebesgeschichte hat mich nicht ganz von sich überzeugen können. Ich fand zwar toll, dass sie eher nebensächlich passiert, kann das Pairing so aber auch nicht ganz nachempfinden. Ich verstehe nicht, was Stevie in dieser Person sieht, da sie die meiste Zeit über ziemlich fies und unhöflich zu ihr war. Alles in allem habe ich die Geschichte aber trotzdem sehr gemocht, weshalb das Buch die 4 Sterne auch absolut verdient hat.

Es war nicht so zäh wie der Anfang des zweiten Buchs und es gab einige Dinge, besonders in der Zeitlinie der Vergangenheit, die ich so vor diesem Buch niemals erwartet hätte und die mir auch gut gefallen haben. Was die Gegenwartszeitlinie betrifft... Mir war klar, dass ja jemand für diese Zufälle verantwortlich sein musste und auf wen sich da der Verdächtigenkreis beschränkt. Trotzdem fand ich die Auflösung dann nicht ganz zufriedenstellend. Ist aber auch wieder eine Sache des persönlichen Geschmacks. War nachvollziehbar auf faktischer Ebene. Auf menschlicher dagegen fand ich, das da einfach was gefehlt hat.
thoughts: - why would they admit stevie though - david straight up sucks his arc makes no sense whatsoever - tbh i don’t get how the whole flora eddie storyline was relevant to the main plot at all - ellie and nate are terrible cringe characters - the mystery/solution feels like a big house of cards that would crumble if you were to take a closer look at it - all of stevie’s revelation scenes were really annoying to read - every stevie and nate scene was cringe - the liberalism was so strong in this one
Das große Finale der Buchreihe und ich muss echt sagen, ich habe sie so, so gerne gemocht! Ich bin ein bisschen traurig, dass es schon wieder vorbei ist, aber ich muss sagen, dass es wirklich meinen Geschmack getroffen hat. Das letzte Buch der Reihe klärt alle aktuellen und alten Fälle komplett auf und ich finde es grandios, wie Maureen Johnson es schafft, alle Fälle aus unterschiedlichen Zeiten sinnvoll miteinander zu kombinieren, so dass am Ende eine spannende und schlüssige Geschichte daraus entspringt. Diese Reihe ist perfekt für alle geeignet, die Detektiv-Geschichten mögen. Es war ein klein wenig wie ein moderner Agatha Christie-Roman oder auch eine moderne Sherlock Holmes Geschichte. Mir gefallen solche Geschichten generell sehr gut, wenn ich immer wieder mit rätseln kann und am Ende eine klare Aufklärung des Falls stattfindet. Große Empfehlung auf jeden Fall von meiner Seite!
3,25 stars The audiobooks for this series are phenomenal, so if you ever want to pick them up, please do so in this format! This is the conclusion to the Truly Devious series, and also to the mystery that has been building up from the first novel onwards. I feel like the first two books in the series, however, had higher stakes, and the author could have taken more risks in this installment. I felt like the mystery was already solved halfway through, and while there were still some reveals at the end of the book, it simply wasn't enough to keep me intrigued. What I did love about this series, however, is the seamless inclusion of diversity, and the anxiety representation, which from my experience, has been super relatable.
Finally truly devious mystery is cracked and the main story of this book series is over. Let me tell you I had so many issues with completing this book that I was struggling to complete it. First off, I wasn’t struggling because the story was boring or anything. I was struggling with how this book was printed at least the addition that I had seem to have a big font but once you start reading it it actually felt like it was a tiny font and you weren’t making any progress no matter how often you would end up reading this book Also, another thing that caused my struggling was that I totally planned to read this book in the wrong way because I was trying to read it every single day before I go to bed and most of the times when I picked it up to read I only read about five pages and then I was too tired to continue on with it so in the end I totally stretched it out myself because I wasn’t really able to read every single day due to being too tired when I go to bed, no matter at what time I would go to bed it was simply just not feeling like I want to read right now and then I just skipped it. However, I’m also glad that the main story is finally over because the first two books even though they were really good like this one we’re just stretching out the plot and ending in a cliffhanger so you had to continue with the next book if you wanted to find out what happens next or who is the main perpetrator of this whole murder mystery so I was glad that this whole truly devious thing is now over and the case is finally closed. However, I really liked it despite couple things that I didn’t like which for one was how David was responding to Stevie the main character because she did nothing wrong except that she was hired by David dad to watch over David so that David wasn’t doing anything stupid because he was doing stupid stuff all the time but the way David responded and also was treating her in the second book and in the third book was just so weird and shouldn’t have happened. It felt like it pulled down the main plot of this book and also pulled down how people feel towards Stevie because everyone thought that Stevie was bad because David was like really famous and she wasn’t. There were also a couple other characters that just simply died for no reason and we never really got an explanation of how they really die. We only have what Stevie thought happened and that’s it. However, I am still going to continue reading the last two books and there’s also the sixth book coming out later this year so I’m also going to be reading this one just to complete this whole universe of Maureen Johnson
I’m so glad I’m finally done with the first three novels in it truly devious series because the main mystery was stretched over three books and the first two books and that with a cliffhanger so that you had to actually read the next book otherwise you would know how this mystery is gonna be solved and how this is gonna end so this was a little bit annoying because that meant you definitely had to get all of the books in order to complete this mystery and you weren’t able to stop after the first book. Anywhere there are two more books already out and I already owned them so I will be reading them nevertheless because I feel like the main problem I had with this book was the struggle with the timing for some reason I decided to read the third book every single evening before going to bed and more than half of the days I ended up not reading before I go to bed because I was too tired to read so I either wasn’t reading at all or I was only reading a few pages so it took me nearly 2 months to actually complete this book and after reaching 50% of the book and still reading it for two months already I finally got the push because of a friend and I completed the other missing 50% in one day
Eher 3,5 Hm... also ich muss zugeben, vom Ende der Reihe bin ich ... hm nicht richtig enttäuscht, aber der ganz große Knall hat mir dennoch gefehlt. Im Grunde war der Weg dahin interessanter. Ich hätte mir da tatsächlich eine würdigere Auflösung gewünscht. Zu Mal man ja durch die Ereignisse aus Band 2 schon ein paar Zusammenhänge kannte, und es mehr darum ging, nun alles mit den Ereignissen in der Gegenwart zu verknüpfen. Ich denke ich hatte einfach ein Motiv erwartet, das nicht ganz so ... ja letztendlich banal war. Was mir gut gefallen hat, war einmal mehr das Setting und auch das Stevie und ihre Freunde mehr miteinander agiert haben. Sie waren stärker in ihre Ermittlungen involviert und es gab weniger Alleingänge. Außerdem gefiel es mir auch, das es noch einmal Rückblicke in die 30er Jahre gab. Es wurde noch ein paar Zusammenhänge aufgedeckt, die dem Fall noch ein paar Wendungen gegeben haben, obwohl man zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon vieles wusste. Was mir weniger gut gefallen hat, war welche Entscheidungen Stevie in puncto David getroffen hat. Die Reihe insgesamt würde ich aber tatsächlich immer gerne weiter empfehlen, weil ich sie im gesamten betrachtet nach wie vor toll finde. Im Vergleich zu Band 1 und 2, hat mich eben hier das Ende nicht ganz überzeugt. Die Reihe im gesamten würde ich mit 4 Sternen bewerten.
what a great conclusion!!! i don't remember exactly what i said about the previous books but i feel the exact same way about this third one! which shows that it's such a good series, there wasn't one weaker book, the tension built up continuously, and all the little puzzle pieces make sense together. what more could you want from a mystery? i still liked the characters and the setting, i still loved the narrator but had a bit of a hard time following the audio book sometimes (however this series might have cured my fear of unknown books on audio) and the politics aspects was spot on imo! literature is allowed, maybe even supposed to be political. young adult literature, too. even if some subplots were a bit "meh whatever" i still enjoyed it so much overall!!

I was struggling with how this book was printed at least the addition that I had seem to have a big font but once you start reading it it actually felt like it was a tiny font and you weren’t making any progress no matter how often you would end up reading this book Also, another thing that caused my struggling was that I totally planned to read this book in the wrong way because I was trying to read it every single day before I go to bed and most of the times when I picked it up to read I only read about five pages and then I was too tired to continue on with it so in the end I totally stretched it out myself because I wasn’t really able to read every single day due to being too tired when I go to bed, no matter at what time I would go to bed it was simply just not feeling like I want to read right now and then I just skipped it. However, I’m also glad that the main story is finally over because the first two books even though they were really good like this one we’re just stretching out the plot and ending in a cliffhanger so you had to continue with the next book if you wanted to find out what happens next or who is the main perpetrator of this whole murder mystery so I was glad that this whole truly devious thing is now over and the case is finally closed. However, I really liked it despite couple things that I didn’t like which for one was how David was responding to Stevie the main character because she did nothing wrong except that she was hired by David dad to watch over David so that David wasn’t doing anything stupid because he was doing stupid stuff all the time but the way David responded and also was treating her in the second book and in the third book was just so weird and shouldn’t have happened. It felt like it pulled down the main plot of this book and also pulled down how people feel towards Stevie because everyone thought that Stevie was bad because David was like really famous and she wasn’t. There were also a couple other characters that just simply died for no reason and we never really got an explanation of how they really die. We only have what Stevie thought happened and that’s it. However, I am still going to continue reading the last two books and there’s also the sixth book coming out later this year so I’m also going to be reading this one just to complete this whole universe of Maureen Johnson
I’m so glad I’m finally done with the first three novels in it truly devious series because the main mystery was stretched over three books and the first two books and that with a cliffhanger so that you had to actually read the next book otherwise you would know how this mystery is gonna be solved and how this is gonna end so this was a little bit annoying because that meant you definitely had to get all of the books in order to complete this mystery and you weren’t able to stop after the first book. Anywhere there are two more books already out and I already owned them so I will be reading them nevertheless because I feel like the main problem I had with this book was the struggle with the timing for some reason I decided to read the third book every single evening before going to bed and more than half of the days I ended up not reading before I go to bed because I was too tired to read so I either wasn’t reading at all or I was only reading a few pages so it took me nearly 2 months to actually complete this book and after reaching 50% of the book and still reading it for two months already I finally got the push because of a friend and I completed the other missing 50% in one day
Eher 3,5 Hm... also ich muss zugeben, vom Ende der Reihe bin ich ... hm nicht richtig enttäuscht, aber der ganz große Knall hat mir dennoch gefehlt. Im Grunde war der Weg dahin interessanter. Ich hätte mir da tatsächlich eine würdigere Auflösung gewünscht. Zu Mal man ja durch die Ereignisse aus Band 2 schon ein paar Zusammenhänge kannte, und es mehr darum ging, nun alles mit den Ereignissen in der Gegenwart zu verknüpfen. Ich denke ich hatte einfach ein Motiv erwartet, das nicht ganz so ... ja letztendlich banal war. Was mir gut gefallen hat, war einmal mehr das Setting und auch das Stevie und ihre Freunde mehr miteinander agiert haben. Sie waren stärker in ihre Ermittlungen involviert und es gab weniger Alleingänge. Außerdem gefiel es mir auch, das es noch einmal Rückblicke in die 30er Jahre gab. Es wurde noch ein paar Zusammenhänge aufgedeckt, die dem Fall noch ein paar Wendungen gegeben haben, obwohl man zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon vieles wusste. Was mir weniger gut gefallen hat, war welche Entscheidungen Stevie in puncto David getroffen hat. Die Reihe insgesamt würde ich aber tatsächlich immer gerne weiter empfehlen, weil ich sie im gesamten betrachtet nach wie vor toll finde. Im Vergleich zu Band 1 und 2, hat mich eben hier das Ende nicht ganz überzeugt. Die Reihe im gesamten würde ich mit 4 Sternen bewerten.
what a great conclusion!!! i don't remember exactly what i said about the previous books but i feel the exact same way about this third one! which shows that it's such a good series, there wasn't one weaker book, the tension built up continuously, and all the little puzzle pieces make sense together. what more could you want from a mystery? i still liked the characters and the setting, i still loved the narrator but had a bit of a hard time following the audio book sometimes (however this series might have cured my fear of unknown books on audio) and the politics aspects was spot on imo! literature is allowed, maybe even supposed to be political. young adult literature, too. even if some subplots were a bit "meh whatever" i still enjoyed it so much overall!!
