Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Bon Temps, Louisiana. She's quiet, doesn't get out much, and tends to mind her own business—except when it comes to her “disability.” Sookie can read minds. And that doesn’t make her too dateable. Then along comes Bill Compton. He’s tall, dark, handsome—and Sookie can’t hear a word he’s thinking. He’s exactly the type of guy she’s been waiting for all her life...
But Bill has a disability of his own: he’s a vampire with a bad reputation. And when a string of murders hits Bon Temps—along with a gang of truly nasty bloodsuckers looking for Bill—Sookie starts to wonder if having a vampire for a boyfriend is such a bright idea.

I listened to the audiobook because of the hype and must admit, I'm not very big on romance novels. My experience with this book was a lot like my experience with the TV-show based on it. The story itself could be pretty good, the vampires coming "out of the coffin" thing is an interesting idea with lots of potential... if you just cut the two main characters. Granted, Sookie is a more coherent character than other romantic "heroines", but she still acts stupid every time the author felt the need to have her protected by one vampire dude or another. Bill is the brooding, "I constantly have to tell you how dangerous I am for you and yet I'm not going to leave you alone", absolutetly boring type of guy. Also, there are endless detailed descriptions of people's clothes, looks and Sookie doing random everyday stuff. The romance is boring and seems forced, the sex scenes are really bad and I just don't get why romanticised violence is apparently seen as something good and desirable. Also, it's a really boring plot device.Although Sookie is the main character, Bill's man pain is constantly considered more important than her feelings, e.g. when she fears she will be raped and instantly starts to worry about how it would affect him or when her friend and secret shapeshifter gains access to her house in the form of a dog, watches her undress and then proceeds to sleep next to her naked and when she wakes up and finds out she starts to worry that Bill will kill him, barely touching on her own feelings towards his betrayal. That being said, although I haven't read many romance novels, I have read worse, so this gets two stars. Mainly because of the story you get when you cut the romance and because it works well as an audiobook you can listen to while cleaning or something. I don't know if I will continue with the series, as I fear the interesting male characters will also start falling in love with Sookie and proceed to act totally stupid because of it.
[Spoiler-free section of the review] I've watched the TV show and greatly enjoyed it, so naturally I was curious about the book. I was pleasantly surprised! It's an easier read to what I'm used to, which is not a negative, I really enjoyed the simpler and efficient writing style, it gets to the point but still gives us enough information on characters and worldbuilding. I never thought Sookie would be such a badass! TV Sookie is a little more passive and demure, though I still thought she had her strengths in the show, but book Sookie is straight up looking for a fight looool. Sookie definitely shot up in my ranks of great and independent female leads. It's a bit comical at times how useless her love interests are when it comes to keeping her safe, but she doesn't need them, she got her own strong will and isn't afraid to throw some hands. I liked Bill for the most part, in the show and book, but I'm glad he's not endgame for Sookie as I have a few moments of his where I shook my head, especially that one scene where Sookie was genuinely afraid of him and they still had the devils tango, that scene was a bit icky. I'm more of a Sam girlie myself lol. All in all, I enjoyed my time and read through it quickly, I can only recommend this book. I would give a fair warning though that there is violence against women depicted and two mentions of SA, which is why I gave it only four stars because it made me quite uncomfortable and it wasn't necessary for the overall plot, but that's a personal gripe. [Minor Spoiler mentions] I also enjoyed the "Murder Mystery" aspect of the book, even if Sookie couldn't technically solve it herself, but she damn well tried. Good for Sookie that her sex was so great she had to have it like 5 times in a row xD That made me chuckle, but I'm glad it was only for a chapter or two until the plot continued. Bill healing her soreness with his blood was an insane scene and I just wonder about the mind of the author, wish I was that creative in my smut lmfaooo.
