acclaimed author Nina Varela delivers a stunning sequel to the richly imagined
queer epic fantasy Crier’s War, which SLJ called “perfect for
fans of Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass.”
For
too long, Automae have
lorded over the kingdom of Rabu, oppressing its human citizens. But the human
revolution has risen, and at its heart is Ayla. Once a handmaiden, now a
fugitive, Ayla narrowly escaped the palace of Lady Crier, the girl she would’ve
killed if she hadn’t fallen in love first.
Now
Ayla has pledged her allegiance to Queen Junn, who can help accomplish the
human rebellion’s ultimate goal:
destroy the Iron Heart. Without its power, the Automae will be weakened to the
point of extinction. Ayla wants to succeed,
but can’t shake the strong feelings she’s developed for Crier. And
unbeknownst to her, Crier has also fled the palace, taking up among traveling
rebels, determined to find and protect Ayla.
Even
as their paths collide, nothing can prepare them for the dark secret underlying
the Iron Heart.

I loved this book, just like the first one! The worldbuilding gets even better in this one than the first one, especially because Crier and Ayla are seperated for a lot of the novel. They both develop more from the first book, Ayla learns that the Automae are not all the same and Crier learns about the world outside of the palace and her books.I loved the romance, because its basically both of them being dumbasses and yearning for each other which is just *chef's kiss*...also their reunion was so great, but also awkward...and their second kiss after all the time apart was just perfect! I also loved all the side characters, especially Queen Junn who deserves her own book! This book should have been longer (just like the first one) because I wanted to spend more time with the characters, not just Crier and Ayla, but also Hook and Erren, who's reunion was amazing as well! All of these characters deserve their own book tbh.The ending is anticlimatic and a bit deus ex machina. I wanted to see a real battle between Kinoks supporterts and Junns. Also wanted to learn more about Dinara and Faye and their connection. Another thing is that the conflict between Benjy and Ayla wasn't explored enough and not really resolved. All in all, this was a good sequel and I will definitely buy the paperback when it comes out!! I listened to it as an audiobook because I loved Crier's War so much, but I definitely need it on my bookshelf!
I just love these two books. The writing is beautiful and so many beautifully romantic thoughts of Crier Ayla will for ever make me tear up.Nina Varela wrote at the beginning "For the queer readers. You deserve every adventure." and Nina Varela gave us this adventure. It's just a story about love, friendship and figuring out what to do in a world full of people that do everything for power.Reading this was a healing experience for me as a genderqueer lesbian. The way that many of the characters are not gendered in any way without saying anything about it is so wonderful because honestly a gender doesn't say anything about a character. Being queer is not ever a topic in the two books. People just are and it's amazing.I am very excited for the time where this becomes a reality for queer people. Now my favorite quote, just because:"I could stand anywhere in this world and I swear my line of sight would end on you. I swear I'll find you in the dark."
