Lennon Carter’s life is falling apart.
Then she gets a mysterious phone call inviting her to take the entrance exam for Drayton College, a school of magic hidden in a secret pocket of Savannah. Lennon has been chosen because—like everyone else at the school—she has the innate gift of persuasion, the ability to wield her will like a weapon, using it to control others and, in rare cases, matter itself.
After passing the test, Lennon begins to learn how to master her devastating and unsettling power. But despite persuasion’s heavy toll on her body and mind, she is wholly captivated by her studies, by Drayton’s lush, moss-draped campus, and by her brilliant classmates. But even more captivating is her charismatic adviser, Dante, who both intimidates and enthralls her.
As Lennon continues in her studies, her control grows, and she starts to uncover more about the secret world she has entered into, including the disquieting history of Drayton College. She is increasingly disturbed by what she learns, for it seems that the ultimate test is to embrace absolute power without succumbing to corruption...and it’s a test she’s terrified she’s going to fail.

"that she’d made the grave error of mistaking the want of closeness for closeness itself. But one was not a sufficient substitute for the other." I was craving a dark academia read and the plot of a hidden school in the heart of Savannah, accessible only to the chosen that are taught the art of persuasion was intriguing. Also this book is more on the adult side, so no petty high school drama. It was a long story and yet I wished it wouldn't end. The characters and their backstories, the paranormal and horror elements and the tension building kept me hooked throughout the book. And then there is the betrayals, lies, secrets, academic politics, backstabbing and the very unique magic system. All of the multiple storylines merged perfectly at the end leaving no plot holes or unanswered questions, creating an epic ending! The book itself is so complex and even though I finished it a couple of days ago I can't stop thinking about it and the experience I went through reading it. And lastly I loved the little rat revolution that was thrown in there. Gregory you will not be forgotten.
In besserer Umsetzung.
Dark academia mit “Überzeugungsmagie“
“Lennon was no hero. And she wasn't even sure she had the spine to call herself a villain.”

While I very much liked the general idea of this book, and the writing style did manage to be gripping at times, I still felt disappointed after finishing it. The romance/relationship didn’t convince me (and, quite frankly, sometimes got on my nerves), every character felt shallow (especially the “friends,” even if I can’t explain why the lot of them would even consider each other friends), and I disliked the MC most of the time. Lennon was described as dangerous, but aside from the parts where <spoiler>she killed or hurt people</spoiler>, which felt kind of accidental, she never truly felt remotely dangerous. It’s more like, “Look what she’s able to do—so dark, so much danger, but aside from that she’s such a sweetheart.” In my opinion, the character work is the weakest point of this book.
