Es startet ein Jahr nach dem Ende der Ereignisse aus Band 1 - wir sind also wieder in der Wet Season. Din hat seine Naivität aus dem ersten Teil abgelegt, das wird einem sofort auf den ersten paar Seiten klar. „You serve to support your family - a decent, dutiful cause, certainly, but one born of desperation, not pain.“ Da kamen bei mir gleich gemischte Gefühle auf - denn einerseits ist es toll das er sich entsprechend entwickelt hat, auf der anderen Seite war ich gerade von dieser unschuldigen Art angetan, jetzt wirkt er resigniert, abgebrüht und vllt auch irgendwie depressiv. Diese greifbare Neugier von Teil 1 ist komplett weg. „As long as it pays, ma’am, I shall serve whatever role you desire.“ Der Falls selbst ist wieder super knifflig und spannend aufgebaut. Es gibt ein paar sehr gute Twists in der Story die einer Schnitzeljagd gleicht. „This work can never satisfy, Din, for it can never finish. The dead cannot be restored. Vice and bribery will never be totally banished from the cantons. And the drop of corruption that lies within every society shall always persist. The duty of the Iudex is not to boldly vanquish it but to manage it. (…)“ Ein unglaublich tolles Fantasy-Krimi-Buch wieder - ähnlich und doch ganz anders als Teil 1. Jetzt heißt es leider mal warten auf Teil 3 ✌️ PS die Schwere die er die meiste Zeit im Buch mit sich herumgetragen hat, wurde von seinen Schultern genommen und er fand wieder etwas mehr Leichtigkeit und Motivation in seiner Aufgabe als Ermittler. 😉☺️🙌
It's murder mystery but also fantasy. With quirky characters, great worldbuilding and a very unique voice. Theoretically, this book should be made for me. In practice, I failed to connect to the characters, which makes me really sad. However, this book is really great. It's in a world that was well-established in The Tainted Cup, and thus can kick both characters and plot to the next level.
It took me a long while to get hooked by both though, but the last fourth of the book showed me how amazing it really is. So a safe recommendation if you love all of the above. What a ride! It’s incredible how we went from this single strange seemingly unsolvable crime to all of THIS! Yet it was so masterfully written and unraveled, with yet another plot twist at the end that I briefly suspected half way through, but then discarded it as the story went on and it didn’t seem possible anymore. Robert Jackson Bennett (and obviously Ana) doesn’t fail to impress me. How can you not love Ana and Din and yearn for another of their stories and crimes to solve?
