There is no explaining this simple truth about life: you will forget much of it. The painful things you were certain you'd never be able to let go? Now you're not entirely sure when they happened, while the thrilling parts, the heart-stopping joys, splintered and scattered and became something else.

This book is filled with nostalgia and not much else. Nostalgia isn't a bad thing, but I think relooping to the past constantly can be a dangerous trap to fall into for fictional and real people. Lara's recounts are interrupted by Joe/their three daughters, which makes sense given the COVID timestamp we're set it with the story, but the back-and-forth takes a while to get through. It's not bad, it's just not good enough for me to really like, either. Everything feels like it's either said to be reacted to or someone is leaving something unsaid to gauge a reaction. Not my speed, but your mileage may vary. "I want to tell her she will never be hurt, that everything will be fair, and that I will always, always be there to protect her. No one sees us but the swallows looming overhead."
