About the book

The bestselling dark and thrilling Black sapphic vampire romantasy that questions what it truly means to sacrifice for love.

"This is a lush, intoxicating read, packing tender romance alongside vicious twists. My new obsession!" - Mark Oshiro, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anger is a Gift and Into the Light

You have no idea what I've done for love. Just as you have no idea what you may one day do.

Once long ago, a girl named Favre sacrificed her wings for love. Thana, the young goddess she so willingly gave them up for, sacrificed that same love for power. But everything has a cost.

Favre never got over the loss of her wings. And Thana's choices led to a life of eternal night, and later, their destruction. Favre has bided her time ever since, waiting for the chance to resurrect the girl she loves who turned her into the creature she hates.

Now, a thousand years later, Leyla, the crown princess of a vampire nation, must travel to Nekros, the island of the dead, when her best friend is captured during an attack on her nation's capital. But nothing is as it seems. The closer she gets to her goal, the more her body seems to work against her, and the more she risks awakening an ancient evil and destroying everything she holds dear.

Set in the aftermath of a war between vampires, humans, and the gods that created them, Patrice Caldwell's devastatingly romantic fantasy debut, Where Shadows Meet, centers the heart-wrenching pain of loss and the struggle of self-discovery to ask: do we choose our fates, or do our fates choose us?

"A feast for the senses. Love, friendship, loss, and the fantastic... it's all here in exquisite, vivid detail. A brilliant addition to the dark fantasy genre." - Kalynn Bayron, New York Times bestselling author of Cinderella Is Dead and Sleep Like Death

Interesting worldbuilding and story premise, but nothing all too suprising

When i started this book, i had zero idea what it was about, so i was really intrigued by the premise of a world where vampires were former gods and the successors were created in different ways, the struggles against fate and destiny and the seemingly complex relationship between the gods, vampires, and humans. To be honest, the first third of the book was rather confusing as there was a lot of name dropping and switches between the different perspectives and times so i found myself flipping back and forth between the chapters and the first pages to figure out what was going on 🥹 However, i started enjoying and understanding more as the story went on. When you have two stories who play at different times but are inevitably intertwined, it is so difficult to manage to tell both at the same time in a way both stories are understandable but only start coming together at the end. I think the author did a great job with that here! Though i do think the story was a bit rushed towards the end and couldve been a bit more elaborate and have some more unexpected twists. I enjoyed the diversity of the characters too, and all the different ways and outcomes of what lengths one can go for love. Ive honestly never read a vampire story in a setting like this before, and even though the love story didnt invent anything new and the plottwist/„fight“ they had toward the end was a bit of a letdown, it was quite an entertaining read. If you’re a fan of unique vampire story settings, thus might be for you.

I really don’t know how to rate this

First of all- I really liked the writing style of the author and I liked even more that Leyla is a vampire with a disability. Never read something like it before but especially since the author explained that she gave her own symptoms of her MS disease to her protagonist, I totally felt connected to the princess. But for the story itself… I don’t know. I felt like we got many pretty words that had zero importance. The story was slow; a lot was kinda predictable. And especially the end was just too quick for the rest of the book being so slow. On the other hand I thought the history and lore of the vampires very interesting. Sadly the problems between humans and vampires were only briefly touched, but that could be more for the sequel I guess. So as a conclusion: I kinda enjoyed it but wouldn’t say it’s a necessity to read 😅
