Àn’yīng’s only hope now is the Immortality Trials. If she can complete every Trial in the magical competition, she has the chance to save her mother’s life. But the Trials are deadly, and the longer Àn’yīng survives, the clearer it is that certain contestants are out for her blood. Even odder, though, is the handsome rival who seems intent on protecting her life. Survival is key, but Àn’yīng will need to figure out if she can trust the stranger she’s falling for, or if he’s the most dangerous player of all.

This is for the cdrama girlies." That's me. I have become a cdrama girly. I have also read up about Xianxia (to sum up stories where the MC strives to seek immortality) and I want more of this. This story is quite complex without overwhelming the reader, and it's more dark and adult than the author's previous dilogy. There are trials - a trope which I've grown a bit tired of - that are quite intense. There's a clear motive for the FMC, and an interesting romance blossoming. What I liked most about it though is the dive into the question of "What is a monster? What makes a human?"

What I didn't like so much is that the author - as in her previous series - writes much better male characters than female protagonists. There's a chance you will end up annoyed with the FMC and in love with the MMC. This makes me a bit sad, because I want to root for the FMC as well. Overall I felt well entertained with some ups and downs. Cdrama for the win! 4/5 stars Thank you @netgalley and @harpercollins for the eARC! #TheScorpionAndTheNightBlossom #Netgalley #Bookstagram

Chinesische Mythologie

Nothing special sadly

The Scorpion and the Night Blossom had an interesting storyline that kept me curious, and I could see the potential in the plot. However, the setting just wasn’t for me, and I found it hard to really connect with the characters. While it wasn’t a bad read by any means, it simply didn’t click with me on a personal level.

"I hope to see you on the other side, little scorpion." 🦂🪷

Captivating idea with many plot twists and magical world-building.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the other reviewers that Àn’yīng only staying alive because people helped her got very dull very fast. We're told she's very ✨special✨ (WITH receipts, if that's not too much of a spoiler) but she never does anything that proves her worthiness of a pill of immortality... Also, while her motive was very strong, the other peoples' motives stayed very flat. We never learn why anyone else really entered the Trials and that bothered me for some reason. The chemistry between Àn’yīng and the MMC was good, but not entirely convincing. All in all a really good idea with a lukewarm execution.

Captivatingly beautiful.

The way Amélie Wen Zhao describes Àn'yīng's world, how she experiences light and darkness is simply amazing. It's a breathtaking and emotional piece about fate, love and family. I'm excited for book 2, The Dragon And The Sun Lotus.
