About the book

NATIONAL BESTSELLER - From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize-winning novel The Remains of the Day comes a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory.

In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.

By turns savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving, The Buried Giant is a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory.

    Mixed feelings about this one...

The story was confusing as hell in the beginning. Well actually it was confusing throughout the whole journey. The characters were interesting enough. Their journey was great, with all the adventures they have been through. I hated Beatrice the whole time. Her bossiness, and the fact that she felt like a gaslighter. I loved Axl, and his sweet and kind ways. Wistan and Edwin were okay. Sir Gawain was an odd one. I kind of hate the ending. Why did it have to be that way for Axl and Beatrice? I thought it would end in a good way. And what happened to Wistan and Edwin? I would have wanted to know.

Another masterpiece by Kazuo Ishiguro. An aging couple finding, through the tale of an epic adventure, to misty memories of a shared past. The characters they meet along the way are beautifully painted in their devotion to their own cause – their stories adding to the dream-like narrative of a world rich in depth, curiosities and terror.
