Und was soll ich sagen, es ist direkt ein Highlight geworden! 🤩 Wir begleiten eine Gruppe von Autoren und Autorinnen aus unterschiedlichen Genres, die alle auf einer privaten Insel zusammenkommen: Sienna und Malcom (als Thriller-Duo Penn Stonely), Romance-Autorin Priscilla, YA-Autorin Millie, Sci-Fi-Autor Jaxon, Horror-Autor Kenzo und Debütautorin Cate Newhouse im Crime-Bereich. Ihre Aufgabe: das Ende eines Buches des berühmten Arthur Fletch schreiben. Eingewiesen werden sie von Agentin Eleanor und Lektor Rufus. Besonders spannend fand ich, wie man die Figuren aus verschiedenen Perspektiven kennenlernt, inklusive ihrer ersten Eindrücke voneinander. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘐𝘵𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 ist ein Thriller mit klaren Locked-Room- und Whodunit-Elementen, angesiedelt auf einer abgelegenen privaten Insel. Perfekte Voraussetzungen für Spannung. Ich habe es geliebt, die Geschichte aus den unterschiedlichen Perspektiven der Charaktere zu lesen. Gerade die Gedanken und Schilderungen geben so viele verschiedene Blickpunkte, sodass ich irgendwann jeden verdächtig fand. Ein tolles Extra in dieser Ausgabe waren die illustrierten Charakterübersichten im Vor- und Nachsatz. Das hat enorm geholfen, den Überblick zu behalten. Die Spannung ist von Seite eins an da, ich bin nur so durch die Seiten geflogen. Viele Twists habe ich überhaupt nicht kommen sehen und das Ende hat mich wirklich überrascht. Genau so wünsche ich mir einen Thriller. Ein richtig starkes, clever konstruiertes Buch mit Sogwirkung und überraschenden Wendungen. Für Thriller-Fans ein absolutes Muss und auch für alle anderen eine große Leseempfehlung! Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir von Evelyn Clarke (V.E. 🇩🇪🇬🇧 Sechs Autoren werden auf die Privatinsel des jüngst verstorbenen Schriftstellers Arthur Fletch eingeladen. Fletch konnte sein letztes Buch nicht beenden, und die Gruppe bekommt ein einmaliges Angebot: Wer innerhalb von 72 Stunden ein würdiges Ende für Fletchs Werk schreibt, bekommt zwei Millionen Dollar und einen Vertrag für das nächste Buch. Und nun beginnt eine Geschichte, die sehr an die Werke von Agatha Christie erinnert. Mir hat dieses Murder-Mystery in der ersten Hälfte ausnehmend gut gefallen, die Charaktere sind gut gezeichnet und es werden viele falsche Fährten gelegt. Doch in der zweiten Hälfte hat es mich etwas verloren. Es wirkt bisweilen arg konstruiert, und die Auflösung hat sich recht früh angedeutet. Sprachlich war es toll, man merkt immer wieder, dass V.E. Schwab neben Cat Clarke eine Hälfte des Pseudonyms "Evelyn Clarke" ist. Wer klassische Whodunnits mag, kommt hier sicher auf seine Kosten. Six authors are invited to the private island of the recently deceased novelist Arthur Fletch. Fletch was unable to finish his final book, and the group is presented with a unique offer: whoever writes a worthy ending to Fletch’s work within 72 hours will receive two million dollars and a contract for their next book. And so begins a story that strongly echoes the works of Agatha Christie. I exceptionally enjoyed the first half of this murder mystery; the characters are well-drawn, and many red herrings are laid. However, it lost me a bit in the second half. At times, it feels overly contrived, and the resolution was hinted at quite early on. Linguistically, it was fantastic—you can really tell that V.E. Schwab, alongside Cat Clarke, makes up one half of the pseudonym "Evelyn Clarke." Those who enjoy classic whodunnits will certainly get their money's worth here.
I am sure the author(s) had a lot of fun writing this book, bringing in their own writing and publishing experiences, putting a spotlight on genres, tropes, clichés and even some overused phrases. I think I will have to read this a second time to fully appreciate everything they put into this. It also feels that everything I may want to criticize about the work, I'm not sure I can. Because: was it actually intentional on the authors' part? Did they already anticipate what us humble reviewers might have to write about it? Everything is so very clever that this is well in the realm of possibilities. I'll still tell you something about the book: on the surface, it’s a deliciously tense locked-room mystery: a group of authors stranded on a remote Scottish island, competing to finish a dead literary icon’s final manuscript. And then - of course - deaths happen. Underneath that, it’s sharp, self-aware, and at times almost wickedly clever. The commentary on the writing and publishing world feels pointed and you can tell this comes from experience. The multiple POVs don't make this a light read at all, and I have to say it was challenging. There's also flashbacks and layers.
