Description

THE BELOVED #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER—FROM THE AUTHOR OF HANG THE MOON

The extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers.

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

The memoir was also made into a major motion picture from Lionsgate in 2017 starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.

Really well written. This book shows the strength and determination of a group of kids whose parents have a different view on the way kids should be raised. And through all the hardships and the struggles this family still loves each other. It is a bittersweet book where you feel for the kids, get angry at the parents but in the end you see the love that is always there with families.

4.5

A book that makes you feel all the feels, demonstrates how f*cking strong kids are - and makes you realize how privileged you are.

I loved every single page of it.

As beautifully written and eye opening this was, it was just infuriating at times. I can't believe that people are actually living like this and the thought made me quite angry. The more I enjoyed reading the story of the author and learning how she went her way in this world.

And then I turned to the "Acknowledgements" and realized that everything I've just read truly had happened...

The memoir that made me fall in love with memoirs. An incredible account of resilience.
