I'd follow Marie Lu to any genre 'cause her books never disappoint me. Winter is currently the biggest pop star in the world that gets recruited to infiltrate a crime syndicate by way of the boss' daughter's birthday party; Sydney is a young spy assigned to be his partner on the mission who is desperate to get promoted to full secret agent. The story starts a little slow. I liked the beginning too, just because Marie Lu is a good writer and because it gave us so many interesting insights into the main characters, but I was itching for the story to get to the point faster and to find out what this story would really be about. I really liked the investigation that followed, the web of platonic relationships that was woven around both of them, and the importance that this found family had to these characters and their arcs, and I also really liked the twist and villain. It rounded up the story nicely. I also really enjoyed the way the romance aspect of this story was treated. It was there, and the protagonists were obviously attracted to each other, but without it detracting from or overshadowing the main plot. It was a great side plot that felt very natural, but then again, I'm not surprised. Marie Lu has a knack for that. All in all a success that I would recommend if you like YA spy stories, or Marie Lu's other books.
