Diese Serie ist einfach nur fantastisch- das Beste, was ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe. Die Charaktere wachsen einem schnell ans Herz, die Handlung schreitet schnell voran mit überraschenden Wendungen, die Weltraumschlachten sind so geschrieben, dass sie wie ein Film vor dem inneren Augen ablaufen. Einfach nur grandios.
Übertrifft deutlich den ersten Teil!
Den Plot fand ich großartig! Denn es gibt einige Intrigen und Plottwists. Das Tempo der Handlung ist schnell, weswegen ich sehr gefesselt war. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich mehr mit Darrow mitfühle, als im ersten Teil. Allgemein hatte es mehr emotionale Auswirkungen auf mich selbst. Ich habe bestimmte Charaktere sehr verabscheut. Aber auch geschmunzelt bei witzigen Szenen. Ich finde, dass dieser Teil eher das ist, was der erste Band einem versprochen hat. Ich freue mich auf den nächsten Band!

Wow - the second entry in the red rising saga hits quite a bit differently than the first one. Where the first was more of a YA, Hunger Games-Type story, the second is much more mature. Not only in terms of genre, although we do lean more heavily into the sci-fi-aspect than before. But also in terms of emotional growth, mental fortitude and social behavior. Nearly every relationship Darrow has or tries to build is flawed - often in more than one way. He continuously puts himself in harms way to further his goals, but never thinks about the people around him enough to include them in the decision making. I'm interested to see, if that will change going forward. At times, the story felt a bit draggy - but the last 15% were so much better and reminded me of the good parts of game of thrones. Everyone has their own goals and there is more intrigue and scheming than honest communication - Love it! I am interested to see where Sevro, Mustang and Ragnar are off to and what will happen next, now that the jackal rewrote the rules of the war.

Ich hatte ja vorher schon gesehen, dass anscheinend Buch 1 das „schlechteste“ der Reihe ist und alle anderen noch wesentlich besser sind…Aber WOOOOW🤯 Dieses Buch hat mich soooo stark gefesselt, ich könnte nicht aufhören zu lesen oder drüber nachzudenken… I will be so for real: Ich verstehe sehr warum sich alles um Darrow dreht😂. Ich würde mich auch anschließen🫡. Darrow ist einer der interessantesten Charaktere über die ich je gelesen habe. Seine Charakterentwicklung ist jetzt schon so unfassbar groß, man kann ihn quasi gar nicht mehr vergleichen mit der Person die er am Anfang von Red Rising ist. Ich liebe Mustang🙌🏽❤️🔥. Ich liebe es, dass sie nicht unterschlägt oder herunterspielt, dass sie die schlauste im Raum ist. Ich liebe es, dass sie nicht auf sich herum treten lässt und dass sie so viel Mitgefühl und Perspektive hat, obwohl sie ganz anders erzogen und sozialisiert wurde❤️🩹. Den letzten Charakter den ich noch erwähnen muss ist Sevro. Ich liebe ihn🙂↕️🙌🏽. Er ist lustig, er ist chaotisch, aber vor allen Dingen ist er loyal bis zur letzten Sekunde und dafür liebe ich ihn🥹🫶🏽. Der Plot war absolut Crazy🤯. Die Betrayals sind so unfassbar dramatisch und herzzerreißend. Ich habe alles gespürt.😮💨 Das letzte Kapitel hat mich auseinander genommen, bin ich ehrlich… Buch 3 ist bestellt🫡.

And how we stand before we fall.” Unbelievable...the sequel to Red Rising was even better. Golden Son is magnificent. I really enjoyed the first book and I praised it, but it pales in comparison. If someone would have told me I'd enjoy an adult military sci-fi/space book I'd have never had believed them. There is no sugar coating, lots of harsh words, bloodbaths, brutality, space and ground warfare and gore scenes. Between the thrilling politics, nonstop action and twists and turns that gave me whiplash the story is gripping from the beginning until the end. Seriously there were very few chapters that offered a quick reprieve before I was thrown back into the madness again. While I enjoyed Pierce Brown’s writing before I think it greatly improved. It is even more immersive and poetic, yet still captivating. I didn't expect to get so attached to all the characters, even the side characters. I'm a sucker for a great character development. Improvements in the characters personality, strengths and weaknesses and the changes in all their relationship. Sevro is my favorite in this book. And the ending is one of the most brutal cliffhangers I have ever seen. Crossing my fingers for my library to come through with Morning Star quickly.
Opening the door to new worlds
First, I was a bit put off - now I am speechless. The book started off too fast, too confusing. I couldn't really relate to Darrow's actions. Especially because I had such a long pause between this book and the first. But my, my... Never would I have thought that Darrow's story could have me on the edge of my seat. Never would I have thought that I could weep over the faith of Darrow's friends. This book took me by surprise and I cannot wait to open the next one. The futuristic world Pierce Brown created is remarkable, gripping and immersive. The combination of sci-fi high-tech and old Roman history lays a solid ground for an enthralling story about overthrowing a cruel and corrupt system. For those who love Ender's Game, Hunger Games and Game of Thrones. It's brutal, it's funny, it's clever, it's poetic and it's full of emotions.
I liked Red Rising, I loved Golden Son. Fantastic second book, which in my experience is often a small let down after a great debut novel. Pierce Brown though manages to keep on one hand the plot interesting and on the other to really flesh out the wide variety of his characters in depth. And I have to agree with all the other reviews ... this ending..., it truly was amazing :) I really hope Pierce Brown manages a great ending in book three making this series to one of my all time favorites.
Wow! Was für ein zweiter Teil!
So viele unerwartete Wendungen, und das Ende hat mich komplett überrascht. Ich bin sehr gespannt, wie es weitergeht. Da zwischen Band 1 und 2 bei mir kaum Zeit vergangen ist, konnte ich sofort wieder in die Geschichte eintauchen, auch wenn sie zwei Jahre nach Red Rising ansetzt. Zwar gab es zwischendurch ein paar Längen, insgesamt hat mich das Buch jedoch absolut überzeugt. Mit diesem Ende habe ich wirklich nicht gerechnet und kurzzeitig hatte ich sogar die Hoffnung, dass die Figuren endlich einmal ein wenig Ruhe zum Durchatmen finden 😦. Jetzt freue ich mich umso mehr auf Band 3!

Ich liebe Pierce Browns Schreibstil. Das will ich gleich am Anfang mal los werden. Zwar dauert es ewig zu lesen, aber so viele Zitate haben mich tief berührt und mir den Einstieg in diesen Band sehr leicht gemacht. Red Rising ist schon eine Weile her, deshalb war ich zu Beginn hauptsächlich verwirrt. Wer sind die ganzen Charaktere? Sollte ich sie schon aus Band eins kennen? Und was passiert grad eigentlich? Ich konnte nicht alle Verwirrung ablegen, mir aber durch ein bisschen Recherche einiges wieder in Erinnerung rufen. (Vielleicht habe ich dabei ein paar Spoiler über sterbende Charaktere eingefangen. Ups.) Plot und Welt sind richtig stark. Auf Englisch habe ich zwar nicht immer alles zu 100% verstanden, aber doch einen recht guten Eindruck erhalten, wie das Setting so aussieht. Auch die Anspielungen auf die Römer und griechische Mythologie (vor allem die Geschichte um Achilles) haben mit echt gut gefallen. Es gibt richtig viele Twists und ich habe immer noch keine Ahnung, wohin die Reise eigentlich gehen soll. Im einen Moment läuft alles nach Plan, im nächsten passiert irgendwas blödes und die Leute sterben rechts und links. Vor allem das Ende lässt mich nicht los. Riesiger Plottwist und es war einfach nur gemein. Es ist nicht so klar, wer überlebt hat und wer nicht und wie es jetzt weitergeht. Zum Glück ist Band drei schon bestellt, obwohl ich gehört habe, dass es eher noch traumatischer werden soll. Ich bin auch ein großer Fan von den Charakteren. Die meisten lernt man ganz gut kennen, obwohl der Cast einfach viel zu groß ist, um allen die Bühne zu bieten, die sie verdienen. Es gibt so viele komplexe Beziehungen und Freundschaften, die ich gerne noch weiter ausgebaut sehen will. Vor allem Sevro hat es mir wie im ersten Teil schon angetan. Der Typ hat irgendwie einen sympathischen Knacks und ist super loyal. Auch mit Roque konnte ich richtig mitfühlen. Er hat jedes Recht zu tun, was er getan hat. Jeder Charakter hat seine eigenen Macken und Narben, niemand ist wirklich gut oder böse, sondern versucht im System zu überleben. Auch die Antagonisten konnte ich irgendwie verstehen bzw. war ich auch mit den Protagonisten nicht immer einer Meinung. Da gab es auch einen recht passenden Moment im Buch: "We're all just wounded souls stumbling around in the dark, desperately trying to stitch ourselves together, hoping to fill the holes they ripped in us." Zum Schluss noch eine Kleinigkeit, die mir nicht ganz so gefallen hat. Der Mittelteil hat sich sehr gezogen. Es ging viel um Politik und Planungen, wobei man nie so richtig weiß, wer eigentlich welches Ziel verfolgt. Das war mir manchmal ein bisschen zu viel und zu trocken. Alles in allem hat mir Golden Son aber echt gut gefallen. Auf den großen Knall warte ich noch, aber der kommt bestimmt bald im nächsten Band. Fünf Sterne bekommt es trotzdem. Mir geht das Buch nämlich nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Vor allem das Ende. Und je länger ich darüber nachdenke, desto mehr Sinn macht alles was passiert. Zwar war das Ende schmerzhaft, es hat aber so viel Sinn gemacht, dass es so gekommen ist. Das nenne ich mal gut geschrieben.
Der Einstieg in Golden Son hat ein paar Seiten gedauert. Ich musste mich erst wieder an die Charaktere und die verschiedenen Konstellationen erinnern. Und dabei waren die zwei Jahre Zeitsprung nicht gerade hilfreich. Aber als ich dann wieder in der Geschichte angekommen war, habe ich jede Sekunde geliebt. Der Autor schafft es, mich in seinen Büchern richtig zu überraschen, was bei meinem Bücherkonsum nicht mehr so häufig passiert. Hier wurde ich wirklich einige Mal komplett unvorbereitet getroffen, was Handlungsstränge oder Charakterentwicklungen angeht. Und das hat meinen Spaß am Buch nur noch vergrößert. Mit dem Ende hätte ich so auch nicht gerechnet. Ich dachte nämlich eher, dass das Ganze in eine andere Richtung abbiegen würde. Und so saß ich komplett gefesselt vor meinem Buch und konnte gar nicht glauben, was Darrow und seinen Freunden nun als nächstes passieren würde. Band drei ist auf jeden Fall schon bestellt. Und dieses Mal darf ich dann nicht so lange mit dem Lesen warten. Denn jetzt MUSS ich wissen, wie es weitergeht!
Brutal. Atmosphärisch. Gewaltig. Wirklich ein grandioses Sci-Fi Abenteuer und noch ein ganzes Stück mehr von dem, was uns schon im ersten Teil begegnet ist und mich so direkt begeistert hat. Intrigen und Plot Twists, heftige Gewalt und gleichzeitig zarte und berührende Szenen von Freundschaft und Liebe. Hätte wirklich nicht gedacht, dass mich ein Fantasy-Roman mal so berühren würde und ich unbedingt wissen möchte, wie es weitergeht. Aber ich muss auch sagen, dass es mir an manchen Stellen wirklich etwas sauer aufgestoßen ist, dass Darrow wirklich für alles irgendwie immer einen Plan hatte. Also es kommt ein Plottwist, den niemand vorausgesehen hat, aber Darrow wusste irgendwie immer Bescheid und hatte schon einen Alternativplan vorbereitet.
Wow, ich weiß nicht, was ich sagen soll. Ich bin sprachlos.
Das ist mit Abstand eines der besten Bücher, die ich jemals gelesen habe. Über 440 Seiten lang gibt es nicht eine Sekunde Pause, um kurz nach Luft zu schnappen und gleichzeitig fühlt sich die Story nie gehetzt oder zu schnell an. Alles greift perfekt ineinander. Die politischen Intrigen sind so verworren und komplex, dass man nie weiß, wer jetzt auf wessen Seite steht und wer sich wo und wann welchen Vorteil verschaffen möchte. Aber die Plot Twist bleiben jederzeit vollkommen nachvollziehbar, wirken überhaupt nicht konstruiert, sondern die Charaktere bleiben sich selbst jederzeit treu. Ich habe das Buch vor einer Stunde beendet und starre immer noch gegen die Wand, um zu verarbeiten, was ich die letzten zwei Tage gelesen habe. Holy Shit - und ich bin sowas von froh, dass ich mir in weiser Voraussicht die komplette Reihe gestern bestellt habe ... mich wird man die nächsten Tage über nichts anderes machen sehen als diese Bücher zu lesen. Bisher steht die Reihe für mich locker auf einer Stufe mit Game of Thrones. Wer auf moralisch fragwürdige Charaktere oder politische Häuser und Familien, die sich gegenseitig betrügen und Allianzen schmieden, steht: Die Reihe ist für euch! Lasst euch nicht davon abschrecken, dass die Reihe offiziell dem Sci-Fi Genre zugeordnet wird, hier werden keine technischen Details durch die Gegend geschmissen, überhaupt nicht. Das Worldbuilding ist 1A.
You don’t have to like the MC to like a book. Sort of
When I say, I don’t like the MC, I mean it. He is self-righteous, selfish and calculating; feels superior most of the time and is not really bothered by being knocked off his pedestal; and talking about pedestals: women are either put on pedestals to be worshipped and adored and thought of without flaw - and every other female character is not worthy of being thought of as female. All of the above would not stop me from liking the story if such a character was the entire point of the story. Well… it’s complicated. We as readers only have our MC’s POV and lacking at that. There is barely a mention of plans ( and to be fair, a big fun part of rebellion stories is the plans, the failing of said plans and then the subsequent quick thinking). Things happen and then it turns out to have been the plan. Deus ex Machina for the win! Maybe I could understand this IF we had Multi-POV and the plan or rescue or whatnot is part of another POV. I repeat, we only have MC’a thoughts - for my dislike on this, please refer to the beginning of my post. The few occasions where a plan was discussed, it was hinted that it was plan-ception and a bigger plan was hashed out before - and we were not invited to read about that! Story wise a lot of back and forth between parties and loyalties happens and I have to admit, I lost track. If you liked the first one for its gory violence, this one will not disappoint in that regard. Admittedly, the relation between Darrow and Mustang evolves (not necessarily meaning the romantic aspect) and we finally get more information on Ares. The 2 last chapters (no kidding) saved my rating on this, finally some planning, finally an actual goal where it’s going. While not liking the MC, some ideas are interesting with regard to philosophy, politics and the state of our planet; and I would have loved to like this book more because of those aspects. They are few and sparse and the other IMO negative aspects put a heavy damper on me while reading. I will hesitantly continue, at least I now know what to expect.
Golden Son ist der für mich stärkste Teil der ersten drei aus der Red Rising Reihe. Er profitiert unglaublich von den Stärken von Pierce Brown. Kriegsführung, Pläne und Fallen und das klare Hybris Motiv. Charaktere die sich zu überlegen fühlen und nicht bedacht genug sind, zahlen Konsequenzen. Fehler haben realle Konsequenzen. Das gelingt der gesamten Reihe unglaublich gut. Dieser Teil fühlt sich noch viel mehr an wie eine Mischung aus Game of Thrones, Dune und einer römischen Gesellschaft, als es im ersten Teil bereits der Fall war. Darrow entwickelt sich von dem Gedanken eines bloßen Schwertes und Vollstrecker Eos Ideen zu einem selbstbestimmteren Charakter weiter. Neue Charaktere wie Lorn, Victra und Ragnar funktionieren unglaublich gut und die Beziehung zwischen Darrow und beiden Kindern von Nero sind die wohl größte Stärke neben dem unglaublichen Ende.
Oh, the plot twists in this one...
I think Darrow might be my dream man. He is someone who sacrifices for what he believes to be right and important. And I mean SACRIFICE. I still love his inner workings and how he truly sees the people around him. Also really love the story itself, which is full of friendship, sarcasm, trust and betrayal, action and schemes. And the cliffhanger and the end?? Mildly disrespectful 😤.

A book that makes you want to discuss it with someone! Golden Son absolutely earned its five stars from me and went straight onto my all-time highlights shelf. This is the kind of book I think should be mandatory reading, because once you strip away the sci-fi setting, what’s left is an uncomfortably sharp reflection of our own world. Why still chewing on Shakespeare and Goethe if you can actually have something contemporary like this to discuss at school. (Besides that some schools banned this book - looking at you Missouri!) What hit me hardest was how closely the characters’ actions mirror real political systems and leadership structures. If you remove the futuristic elements, the manipulation, ambition, and cruelty feel painfully familiar. Watching how power is gained, used, and justified was genuinely crushing at times — not because it felt unrealistic, but because it felt too real. I struggled a bit with Red Rising at first. Sci-fi isn’t usually my genre (I’m much more familiar with fae, dragons, and dwarves), and there were moments where the worldbuilding left me confused. But Golden Son is where everything clicks. This book shows exactly why the series is considered a masterpiece. The scope widens, the stakes deepen, and suddenly the things that felt overwhelming or unclear before start to make sense. I don’t want to give away too much, because this is a story best experienced firsthand. But if you believe that reading always is political — or if you’re one of the people who still insists it isn’t — this book is for you. Golden Son doesn’t lecture, but it shows, and that’s what makes it so powerful. If Red Rising left you with questions (and it definitely did for me), Golden Son answers them in the most brutal and brilliant way possible. I finished it knowing I’d found a new favorite — and immediately picked up Morning Star.
Sooooooo..... Middle Book Syndrome???? I still love the premises of this series, but geeze I sometimes wanted to shake the hero out of his own head. The storyline is over and over interrupted by Darrow's mental analysis and justification. I get that the author wants to give the character some depth, but I felt it was too dramatic at times (much more dramatic than this actual present story progress) and distracting. Of course the end was a cliff hanger, so I will probably read the next book too.
3,5 Stars Did I enjoy the book? Or am I just caught up in the hype and all the glowing ratings? I’m not entirely sure. For context: I’m really not a big fan of battle scenes – and there are quite a lot of them here. So maybe that’s just me. It all feels so epic. Too epic. Big speeches. Battles. Hate. Rage. Intrigue. It lacks nuance, and I struggled to connect with many of the characters because they didn’t feel fully fleshed out. I also didn’t trust anyone (which is probably the point), so most of the twists and schemes didn’t really shock me. That said… I still want to know what happens next and will keep reading. So it can’t have been that bad, right?
Preferred it over Red Rising (which I enjoyed though). The writing style doesn't consist of extremely short sentences and statements, which I found arrogant and somehow difficult to read in Red Rising. Golden Son is nicely written and easy to read and follow, while still having the bold writing style of its predecessor. It is just more finetuned and I appreciate it more now. The story, plot, action, intrigues and politics are sublime! I'm gonna read Morning Star right away :)
I expected the second book to be better than the first, unfortunately it was not. For my liking there was too much war and politics. I just don’t like it and I missed the more direct interactions without reading so much between the lines. The plot was just genius and the twists and especially the cliffhanger - I have already ordered book three to start later this week. Darrow, how can this continue?!?
Während ich die Komplexität von Band 1 noch als gelungene Mischung aus diversen großartigen Werken bezeichnete, – ich zitiere „Dystopie trifft Science Fiction trifft Olymp trifft High Fantasy! Das Leben in einer dystopischen Gesellschaft, die ihre Bewohner ausbeutet, à la Panem. Die Eroberung von und das Leben auf fernen Planeten à la Enders Game. Göttervergleiche und der Olymp à la Percy Jackson. Das Leben in Burgen, samt Intrigen, à la Game of Thrones. Kriegsgemetzel à la SPARTA.“ – hat Band 2 eher Elemente aus Star Wars. Sternenkriege, politische Entwicklungen. Ein sehr komplexer Band, auf den man sich sehr konzentrieren sollte, um die Geschichte vollkommen zu verstehen. Trotz Personenglossar brauchte ich eine Weile, um die vielen Charaktere zuordnen zu können, da die Anzahl an Farben, Häusern, Familien und Charakteren schlichtweg überwältigend ist und der erste Band schon zu lange zurücklag. Dann konnte ich der Geschichte aber gut folgen. Das Buch knüpft an Darrows Zeit nach dem Institut an. Er lebt als Roter im goldenen Mantel unter den Goldenen und muss erkennen, dass die politischen Bündnisse nicht auf Loyalität aufbauen, sondern auf Eigennutzen und Machtgier. Er erkennt, dass nur eines gewiss ist: Es gibt keine Gewissheit. Jeder kann jeden verraten. Das Buch ist durchweg spannend, stellt neue Charaktere vor, feilt alte aus und nimmt uns im Verlaufe des Buches viele auf meist mehr, selten weniger blutige Weise. Die Geschichte ist der reinste Adrenalinstoß, allerdings brauchte es etwas zu lange, um richtig Fahrt aufzunehmen. Insbesondere der Mittelteil war für mich ein wenig zäh, sodass ich das Buch eine Weile zur Seite legen und letztendlich nochmal von vorn beginnen musste. Brown schafft dann aber doch, den Leser in seinen Sog aus Intrigen, Irrungen und Wirrungen zu ziehen. Insbesondere der Protagonist Darrow ist sehr gut gelungen. Er muss auf schmerzliche Weise erleben, welche Konsequenzen auch nur ein einziger Fehler haben kann. Er erleidet schreckliche Niederlagen, um dann wie ein Phönix aus der Asche aufzuerstehen. – sehr passend als Lektüre über Ostern. Brown beendet das Buch mit einem fiesen Cliffhanger, der einen direkt zum nächsten Buch greifen lässt. Zum Glück steht es bereits in meinem Regal parat. 4 von 5 Sternen für diesen zweiten Band.
Look, you can read this as a generic dude-bro power fantasy and be done with it—and still have a great time. You still get the adrenaline-fuelled action scenes, the heroic speeches, the interpersonal drama, and the underdog revolutionary story. But there's so much more if you pay attention. Building on the world established in the previous book, it walks the line between ridiculously violent, over-the-top ostentation, arrogance, and comically self-serving behaviour—but Pierce Brown manages to keep this society authentic. None of this would have worked if the characters didn't take themselves and their world seriously—but they do. So we get this extremely hierarchical society based on oppression and the exploitation of those deemed lower. So what do you get when everyone is neatly organized (meaning: subjugated) into their caste, and the ones on top revel in excess, with nothing to do but sit atop everyone else, busy with their schemes and machinations? Well, of course, you make up unnecessarily brutal war games, create increasingly ridiculous titles for warriors, and turn everything into a reference to the Roman Empire—which you regard as the peak of humanity (second only to yourself, of course): petty house wars, conflicts for political gain, and so on and so forth... Pierce Brown finds yet more ways to show how ingrained the need for domination and hierarchical thinking is within Gold society—and how, in their arrogance, some of them even believe themselves to be just. We still follow Darrow, who has shed the tiny bit of Gary Stu-ness he had in the last book, while still pursuing the same goal—but now with even higher stakes. That’s all I’ll say about the plot—go read it. Do yourself the favour. Some might call this a hot take, but this series is everything Babel by R.F. Kuang thematically wanted to be, just leagues better: How far do you need to go in order to go from systematic oppression to a just society? How much violence is too much? Does it break you in the end? Can you break the cycle of violence, even if it means not enacting revenge? Sure, the Red Rising series is completely divorced from real-life history, but that gives it the opportunity to be more than just a series of scenes where the author shouts at us about how messed up oppression is.
This book was as fast paced as the first one and the plot well thought out. I just cannot stand Darrow's obnoxious speech making! He's basically a Mary-Sue, perfect, flaw-less with some angst thrown in when you know he's gonna succeed even when he fails. He's just too arrogant and takes the moral high ground. I think I wouldn't mind if the book wasn't told from his perspective but being in his head and hearing his self-righteous and peacocky thoughts just got on my nerves. That said, I really like Sevro and his father. If this book was told from his perspective I would have loved it.
Das Buch und alles, was darin passiert ist, hat mich so wütend gemacht. Was für ein schlimme Welt Die Handlungen finde ich spannend, die Geschichte ist mitreißend, aber einige Stellen ziehen sich so extrem, dass ich kaum Lust habe weiterzulesen, obwohl es eigentlich echt gut ist. Ich hoffe das wird in den nächsten Teilen nicht noch schlimmer, denn die werden immer dicker
Second Part of the Red Rising Series and the struggle continues. Darrow is now Part of his arch enemy family and the battles continue. Not only his seeking for revenge but the inner fights within the diffrent families and the society itself culminate and i cannot wait for the third part. I'm still in love with the roman mythology meets space adventure meets dystopian setting. Really, really great!

Space Opera vom Feinsten
Diese Serie ist einfach nur fantastisch- das Beste, was ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe. Die Charaktere wachsen einem schnell ans Herz, die Handlung schreitet schnell voran mit überraschenden Wendungen, die Weltraumschlachten sind so geschrieben, dass sie wie ein Film vor dem inneren Augen ablaufen. Einfach nur grandios.
Übertrifft deutlich den ersten Teil!
Den Plot fand ich großartig! Denn es gibt einige Intrigen und Plottwists. Das Tempo der Handlung ist schnell, weswegen ich sehr gefesselt war. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich mehr mit Darrow mitfühle, als im ersten Teil. Allgemein hatte es mehr emotionale Auswirkungen auf mich selbst. Ich habe bestimmte Charaktere sehr verabscheut. Aber auch geschmunzelt bei witzigen Szenen. Ich finde, dass dieser Teil eher das ist, was der erste Band einem versprochen hat. Ich freue mich auf den nächsten Band!

Wow - the second entry in the red rising saga hits quite a bit differently than the first one. Where the first was more of a YA, Hunger Games-Type story, the second is much more mature. Not only in terms of genre, although we do lean more heavily into the sci-fi-aspect than before. But also in terms of emotional growth, mental fortitude and social behavior. Nearly every relationship Darrow has or tries to build is flawed - often in more than one way. He continuously puts himself in harms way to further his goals, but never thinks about the people around him enough to include them in the decision making. I'm interested to see, if that will change going forward. At times, the story felt a bit draggy - but the last 15% were so much better and reminded me of the good parts of game of thrones. Everyone has their own goals and there is more intrigue and scheming than honest communication - Love it! I am interested to see where Sevro, Mustang and Ragnar are off to and what will happen next, now that the jackal rewrote the rules of the war.

Ich hatte ja vorher schon gesehen, dass anscheinend Buch 1 das „schlechteste“ der Reihe ist und alle anderen noch wesentlich besser sind…Aber WOOOOW🤯 Dieses Buch hat mich soooo stark gefesselt, ich könnte nicht aufhören zu lesen oder drüber nachzudenken… I will be so for real: Ich verstehe sehr warum sich alles um Darrow dreht😂. Ich würde mich auch anschließen🫡. Darrow ist einer der interessantesten Charaktere über die ich je gelesen habe. Seine Charakterentwicklung ist jetzt schon so unfassbar groß, man kann ihn quasi gar nicht mehr vergleichen mit der Person die er am Anfang von Red Rising ist. Ich liebe Mustang🙌🏽❤️🔥. Ich liebe es, dass sie nicht unterschlägt oder herunterspielt, dass sie die schlauste im Raum ist. Ich liebe es, dass sie nicht auf sich herum treten lässt und dass sie so viel Mitgefühl und Perspektive hat, obwohl sie ganz anders erzogen und sozialisiert wurde❤️🩹. Den letzten Charakter den ich noch erwähnen muss ist Sevro. Ich liebe ihn🙂↕️🙌🏽. Er ist lustig, er ist chaotisch, aber vor allen Dingen ist er loyal bis zur letzten Sekunde und dafür liebe ich ihn🥹🫶🏽. Der Plot war absolut Crazy🤯. Die Betrayals sind so unfassbar dramatisch und herzzerreißend. Ich habe alles gespürt.😮💨 Das letzte Kapitel hat mich auseinander genommen, bin ich ehrlich… Buch 3 ist bestellt🫡.

And how we stand before we fall.” Unbelievable...the sequel to Red Rising was even better. Golden Son is magnificent. I really enjoyed the first book and I praised it, but it pales in comparison. If someone would have told me I'd enjoy an adult military sci-fi/space book I'd have never had believed them. There is no sugar coating, lots of harsh words, bloodbaths, brutality, space and ground warfare and gore scenes. Between the thrilling politics, nonstop action and twists and turns that gave me whiplash the story is gripping from the beginning until the end. Seriously there were very few chapters that offered a quick reprieve before I was thrown back into the madness again. While I enjoyed Pierce Brown’s writing before I think it greatly improved. It is even more immersive and poetic, yet still captivating. I didn't expect to get so attached to all the characters, even the side characters. I'm a sucker for a great character development. Improvements in the characters personality, strengths and weaknesses and the changes in all their relationship. Sevro is my favorite in this book. And the ending is one of the most brutal cliffhangers I have ever seen. Crossing my fingers for my library to come through with Morning Star quickly.
Opening the door to new worlds
First, I was a bit put off - now I am speechless. The book started off too fast, too confusing. I couldn't really relate to Darrow's actions. Especially because I had such a long pause between this book and the first. But my, my... Never would I have thought that Darrow's story could have me on the edge of my seat. Never would I have thought that I could weep over the faith of Darrow's friends. This book took me by surprise and I cannot wait to open the next one. The futuristic world Pierce Brown created is remarkable, gripping and immersive. The combination of sci-fi high-tech and old Roman history lays a solid ground for an enthralling story about overthrowing a cruel and corrupt system. For those who love Ender's Game, Hunger Games and Game of Thrones. It's brutal, it's funny, it's clever, it's poetic and it's full of emotions.
I liked Red Rising, I loved Golden Son. Fantastic second book, which in my experience is often a small let down after a great debut novel. Pierce Brown though manages to keep on one hand the plot interesting and on the other to really flesh out the wide variety of his characters in depth. And I have to agree with all the other reviews ... this ending..., it truly was amazing :) I really hope Pierce Brown manages a great ending in book three making this series to one of my all time favorites.
Wow! Was für ein zweiter Teil!
So viele unerwartete Wendungen, und das Ende hat mich komplett überrascht. Ich bin sehr gespannt, wie es weitergeht. Da zwischen Band 1 und 2 bei mir kaum Zeit vergangen ist, konnte ich sofort wieder in die Geschichte eintauchen, auch wenn sie zwei Jahre nach Red Rising ansetzt. Zwar gab es zwischendurch ein paar Längen, insgesamt hat mich das Buch jedoch absolut überzeugt. Mit diesem Ende habe ich wirklich nicht gerechnet und kurzzeitig hatte ich sogar die Hoffnung, dass die Figuren endlich einmal ein wenig Ruhe zum Durchatmen finden 😦. Jetzt freue ich mich umso mehr auf Band 3!

Ich liebe Pierce Browns Schreibstil. Das will ich gleich am Anfang mal los werden. Zwar dauert es ewig zu lesen, aber so viele Zitate haben mich tief berührt und mir den Einstieg in diesen Band sehr leicht gemacht. Red Rising ist schon eine Weile her, deshalb war ich zu Beginn hauptsächlich verwirrt. Wer sind die ganzen Charaktere? Sollte ich sie schon aus Band eins kennen? Und was passiert grad eigentlich? Ich konnte nicht alle Verwirrung ablegen, mir aber durch ein bisschen Recherche einiges wieder in Erinnerung rufen. (Vielleicht habe ich dabei ein paar Spoiler über sterbende Charaktere eingefangen. Ups.) Plot und Welt sind richtig stark. Auf Englisch habe ich zwar nicht immer alles zu 100% verstanden, aber doch einen recht guten Eindruck erhalten, wie das Setting so aussieht. Auch die Anspielungen auf die Römer und griechische Mythologie (vor allem die Geschichte um Achilles) haben mit echt gut gefallen. Es gibt richtig viele Twists und ich habe immer noch keine Ahnung, wohin die Reise eigentlich gehen soll. Im einen Moment läuft alles nach Plan, im nächsten passiert irgendwas blödes und die Leute sterben rechts und links. Vor allem das Ende lässt mich nicht los. Riesiger Plottwist und es war einfach nur gemein. Es ist nicht so klar, wer überlebt hat und wer nicht und wie es jetzt weitergeht. Zum Glück ist Band drei schon bestellt, obwohl ich gehört habe, dass es eher noch traumatischer werden soll. Ich bin auch ein großer Fan von den Charakteren. Die meisten lernt man ganz gut kennen, obwohl der Cast einfach viel zu groß ist, um allen die Bühne zu bieten, die sie verdienen. Es gibt so viele komplexe Beziehungen und Freundschaften, die ich gerne noch weiter ausgebaut sehen will. Vor allem Sevro hat es mir wie im ersten Teil schon angetan. Der Typ hat irgendwie einen sympathischen Knacks und ist super loyal. Auch mit Roque konnte ich richtig mitfühlen. Er hat jedes Recht zu tun, was er getan hat. Jeder Charakter hat seine eigenen Macken und Narben, niemand ist wirklich gut oder böse, sondern versucht im System zu überleben. Auch die Antagonisten konnte ich irgendwie verstehen bzw. war ich auch mit den Protagonisten nicht immer einer Meinung. Da gab es auch einen recht passenden Moment im Buch: "We're all just wounded souls stumbling around in the dark, desperately trying to stitch ourselves together, hoping to fill the holes they ripped in us." Zum Schluss noch eine Kleinigkeit, die mir nicht ganz so gefallen hat. Der Mittelteil hat sich sehr gezogen. Es ging viel um Politik und Planungen, wobei man nie so richtig weiß, wer eigentlich welches Ziel verfolgt. Das war mir manchmal ein bisschen zu viel und zu trocken. Alles in allem hat mir Golden Son aber echt gut gefallen. Auf den großen Knall warte ich noch, aber der kommt bestimmt bald im nächsten Band. Fünf Sterne bekommt es trotzdem. Mir geht das Buch nämlich nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Vor allem das Ende. Und je länger ich darüber nachdenke, desto mehr Sinn macht alles was passiert. Zwar war das Ende schmerzhaft, es hat aber so viel Sinn gemacht, dass es so gekommen ist. Das nenne ich mal gut geschrieben.
Der Einstieg in Golden Son hat ein paar Seiten gedauert. Ich musste mich erst wieder an die Charaktere und die verschiedenen Konstellationen erinnern. Und dabei waren die zwei Jahre Zeitsprung nicht gerade hilfreich. Aber als ich dann wieder in der Geschichte angekommen war, habe ich jede Sekunde geliebt. Der Autor schafft es, mich in seinen Büchern richtig zu überraschen, was bei meinem Bücherkonsum nicht mehr so häufig passiert. Hier wurde ich wirklich einige Mal komplett unvorbereitet getroffen, was Handlungsstränge oder Charakterentwicklungen angeht. Und das hat meinen Spaß am Buch nur noch vergrößert. Mit dem Ende hätte ich so auch nicht gerechnet. Ich dachte nämlich eher, dass das Ganze in eine andere Richtung abbiegen würde. Und so saß ich komplett gefesselt vor meinem Buch und konnte gar nicht glauben, was Darrow und seinen Freunden nun als nächstes passieren würde. Band drei ist auf jeden Fall schon bestellt. Und dieses Mal darf ich dann nicht so lange mit dem Lesen warten. Denn jetzt MUSS ich wissen, wie es weitergeht!
Brutal. Atmosphärisch. Gewaltig. Wirklich ein grandioses Sci-Fi Abenteuer und noch ein ganzes Stück mehr von dem, was uns schon im ersten Teil begegnet ist und mich so direkt begeistert hat. Intrigen und Plot Twists, heftige Gewalt und gleichzeitig zarte und berührende Szenen von Freundschaft und Liebe. Hätte wirklich nicht gedacht, dass mich ein Fantasy-Roman mal so berühren würde und ich unbedingt wissen möchte, wie es weitergeht. Aber ich muss auch sagen, dass es mir an manchen Stellen wirklich etwas sauer aufgestoßen ist, dass Darrow wirklich für alles irgendwie immer einen Plan hatte. Also es kommt ein Plottwist, den niemand vorausgesehen hat, aber Darrow wusste irgendwie immer Bescheid und hatte schon einen Alternativplan vorbereitet.
Wow, ich weiß nicht, was ich sagen soll. Ich bin sprachlos.
Das ist mit Abstand eines der besten Bücher, die ich jemals gelesen habe. Über 440 Seiten lang gibt es nicht eine Sekunde Pause, um kurz nach Luft zu schnappen und gleichzeitig fühlt sich die Story nie gehetzt oder zu schnell an. Alles greift perfekt ineinander. Die politischen Intrigen sind so verworren und komplex, dass man nie weiß, wer jetzt auf wessen Seite steht und wer sich wo und wann welchen Vorteil verschaffen möchte. Aber die Plot Twist bleiben jederzeit vollkommen nachvollziehbar, wirken überhaupt nicht konstruiert, sondern die Charaktere bleiben sich selbst jederzeit treu. Ich habe das Buch vor einer Stunde beendet und starre immer noch gegen die Wand, um zu verarbeiten, was ich die letzten zwei Tage gelesen habe. Holy Shit - und ich bin sowas von froh, dass ich mir in weiser Voraussicht die komplette Reihe gestern bestellt habe ... mich wird man die nächsten Tage über nichts anderes machen sehen als diese Bücher zu lesen. Bisher steht die Reihe für mich locker auf einer Stufe mit Game of Thrones. Wer auf moralisch fragwürdige Charaktere oder politische Häuser und Familien, die sich gegenseitig betrügen und Allianzen schmieden, steht: Die Reihe ist für euch! Lasst euch nicht davon abschrecken, dass die Reihe offiziell dem Sci-Fi Genre zugeordnet wird, hier werden keine technischen Details durch die Gegend geschmissen, überhaupt nicht. Das Worldbuilding ist 1A.
You don’t have to like the MC to like a book. Sort of
When I say, I don’t like the MC, I mean it. He is self-righteous, selfish and calculating; feels superior most of the time and is not really bothered by being knocked off his pedestal; and talking about pedestals: women are either put on pedestals to be worshipped and adored and thought of without flaw - and every other female character is not worthy of being thought of as female. All of the above would not stop me from liking the story if such a character was the entire point of the story. Well… it’s complicated. We as readers only have our MC’s POV and lacking at that. There is barely a mention of plans ( and to be fair, a big fun part of rebellion stories is the plans, the failing of said plans and then the subsequent quick thinking). Things happen and then it turns out to have been the plan. Deus ex Machina for the win! Maybe I could understand this IF we had Multi-POV and the plan or rescue or whatnot is part of another POV. I repeat, we only have MC’a thoughts - for my dislike on this, please refer to the beginning of my post. The few occasions where a plan was discussed, it was hinted that it was plan-ception and a bigger plan was hashed out before - and we were not invited to read about that! Story wise a lot of back and forth between parties and loyalties happens and I have to admit, I lost track. If you liked the first one for its gory violence, this one will not disappoint in that regard. Admittedly, the relation between Darrow and Mustang evolves (not necessarily meaning the romantic aspect) and we finally get more information on Ares. The 2 last chapters (no kidding) saved my rating on this, finally some planning, finally an actual goal where it’s going. While not liking the MC, some ideas are interesting with regard to philosophy, politics and the state of our planet; and I would have loved to like this book more because of those aspects. They are few and sparse and the other IMO negative aspects put a heavy damper on me while reading. I will hesitantly continue, at least I now know what to expect.
Golden Son ist der für mich stärkste Teil der ersten drei aus der Red Rising Reihe. Er profitiert unglaublich von den Stärken von Pierce Brown. Kriegsführung, Pläne und Fallen und das klare Hybris Motiv. Charaktere die sich zu überlegen fühlen und nicht bedacht genug sind, zahlen Konsequenzen. Fehler haben realle Konsequenzen. Das gelingt der gesamten Reihe unglaublich gut. Dieser Teil fühlt sich noch viel mehr an wie eine Mischung aus Game of Thrones, Dune und einer römischen Gesellschaft, als es im ersten Teil bereits der Fall war. Darrow entwickelt sich von dem Gedanken eines bloßen Schwertes und Vollstrecker Eos Ideen zu einem selbstbestimmteren Charakter weiter. Neue Charaktere wie Lorn, Victra und Ragnar funktionieren unglaublich gut und die Beziehung zwischen Darrow und beiden Kindern von Nero sind die wohl größte Stärke neben dem unglaublichen Ende.
Oh, the plot twists in this one...
I think Darrow might be my dream man. He is someone who sacrifices for what he believes to be right and important. And I mean SACRIFICE. I still love his inner workings and how he truly sees the people around him. Also really love the story itself, which is full of friendship, sarcasm, trust and betrayal, action and schemes. And the cliffhanger and the end?? Mildly disrespectful 😤.

A book that makes you want to discuss it with someone! Golden Son absolutely earned its five stars from me and went straight onto my all-time highlights shelf. This is the kind of book I think should be mandatory reading, because once you strip away the sci-fi setting, what’s left is an uncomfortably sharp reflection of our own world. Why still chewing on Shakespeare and Goethe if you can actually have something contemporary like this to discuss at school. (Besides that some schools banned this book - looking at you Missouri!) What hit me hardest was how closely the characters’ actions mirror real political systems and leadership structures. If you remove the futuristic elements, the manipulation, ambition, and cruelty feel painfully familiar. Watching how power is gained, used, and justified was genuinely crushing at times — not because it felt unrealistic, but because it felt too real. I struggled a bit with Red Rising at first. Sci-fi isn’t usually my genre (I’m much more familiar with fae, dragons, and dwarves), and there were moments where the worldbuilding left me confused. But Golden Son is where everything clicks. This book shows exactly why the series is considered a masterpiece. The scope widens, the stakes deepen, and suddenly the things that felt overwhelming or unclear before start to make sense. I don’t want to give away too much, because this is a story best experienced firsthand. But if you believe that reading always is political — or if you’re one of the people who still insists it isn’t — this book is for you. Golden Son doesn’t lecture, but it shows, and that’s what makes it so powerful. If Red Rising left you with questions (and it definitely did for me), Golden Son answers them in the most brutal and brilliant way possible. I finished it knowing I’d found a new favorite — and immediately picked up Morning Star.
Sooooooo..... Middle Book Syndrome???? I still love the premises of this series, but geeze I sometimes wanted to shake the hero out of his own head. The storyline is over and over interrupted by Darrow's mental analysis and justification. I get that the author wants to give the character some depth, but I felt it was too dramatic at times (much more dramatic than this actual present story progress) and distracting. Of course the end was a cliff hanger, so I will probably read the next book too.
3,5 Stars Did I enjoy the book? Or am I just caught up in the hype and all the glowing ratings? I’m not entirely sure. For context: I’m really not a big fan of battle scenes – and there are quite a lot of them here. So maybe that’s just me. It all feels so epic. Too epic. Big speeches. Battles. Hate. Rage. Intrigue. It lacks nuance, and I struggled to connect with many of the characters because they didn’t feel fully fleshed out. I also didn’t trust anyone (which is probably the point), so most of the twists and schemes didn’t really shock me. That said… I still want to know what happens next and will keep reading. So it can’t have been that bad, right?
Preferred it over Red Rising (which I enjoyed though). The writing style doesn't consist of extremely short sentences and statements, which I found arrogant and somehow difficult to read in Red Rising. Golden Son is nicely written and easy to read and follow, while still having the bold writing style of its predecessor. It is just more finetuned and I appreciate it more now. The story, plot, action, intrigues and politics are sublime! I'm gonna read Morning Star right away :)
I expected the second book to be better than the first, unfortunately it was not. For my liking there was too much war and politics. I just don’t like it and I missed the more direct interactions without reading so much between the lines. The plot was just genius and the twists and especially the cliffhanger - I have already ordered book three to start later this week. Darrow, how can this continue?!?
Während ich die Komplexität von Band 1 noch als gelungene Mischung aus diversen großartigen Werken bezeichnete, – ich zitiere „Dystopie trifft Science Fiction trifft Olymp trifft High Fantasy! Das Leben in einer dystopischen Gesellschaft, die ihre Bewohner ausbeutet, à la Panem. Die Eroberung von und das Leben auf fernen Planeten à la Enders Game. Göttervergleiche und der Olymp à la Percy Jackson. Das Leben in Burgen, samt Intrigen, à la Game of Thrones. Kriegsgemetzel à la SPARTA.“ – hat Band 2 eher Elemente aus Star Wars. Sternenkriege, politische Entwicklungen. Ein sehr komplexer Band, auf den man sich sehr konzentrieren sollte, um die Geschichte vollkommen zu verstehen. Trotz Personenglossar brauchte ich eine Weile, um die vielen Charaktere zuordnen zu können, da die Anzahl an Farben, Häusern, Familien und Charakteren schlichtweg überwältigend ist und der erste Band schon zu lange zurücklag. Dann konnte ich der Geschichte aber gut folgen. Das Buch knüpft an Darrows Zeit nach dem Institut an. Er lebt als Roter im goldenen Mantel unter den Goldenen und muss erkennen, dass die politischen Bündnisse nicht auf Loyalität aufbauen, sondern auf Eigennutzen und Machtgier. Er erkennt, dass nur eines gewiss ist: Es gibt keine Gewissheit. Jeder kann jeden verraten. Das Buch ist durchweg spannend, stellt neue Charaktere vor, feilt alte aus und nimmt uns im Verlaufe des Buches viele auf meist mehr, selten weniger blutige Weise. Die Geschichte ist der reinste Adrenalinstoß, allerdings brauchte es etwas zu lange, um richtig Fahrt aufzunehmen. Insbesondere der Mittelteil war für mich ein wenig zäh, sodass ich das Buch eine Weile zur Seite legen und letztendlich nochmal von vorn beginnen musste. Brown schafft dann aber doch, den Leser in seinen Sog aus Intrigen, Irrungen und Wirrungen zu ziehen. Insbesondere der Protagonist Darrow ist sehr gut gelungen. Er muss auf schmerzliche Weise erleben, welche Konsequenzen auch nur ein einziger Fehler haben kann. Er erleidet schreckliche Niederlagen, um dann wie ein Phönix aus der Asche aufzuerstehen. – sehr passend als Lektüre über Ostern. Brown beendet das Buch mit einem fiesen Cliffhanger, der einen direkt zum nächsten Buch greifen lässt. Zum Glück steht es bereits in meinem Regal parat. 4 von 5 Sternen für diesen zweiten Band.
Look, you can read this as a generic dude-bro power fantasy and be done with it—and still have a great time. You still get the adrenaline-fuelled action scenes, the heroic speeches, the interpersonal drama, and the underdog revolutionary story. But there's so much more if you pay attention. Building on the world established in the previous book, it walks the line between ridiculously violent, over-the-top ostentation, arrogance, and comically self-serving behaviour—but Pierce Brown manages to keep this society authentic. None of this would have worked if the characters didn't take themselves and their world seriously—but they do. So we get this extremely hierarchical society based on oppression and the exploitation of those deemed lower. So what do you get when everyone is neatly organized (meaning: subjugated) into their caste, and the ones on top revel in excess, with nothing to do but sit atop everyone else, busy with their schemes and machinations? Well, of course, you make up unnecessarily brutal war games, create increasingly ridiculous titles for warriors, and turn everything into a reference to the Roman Empire—which you regard as the peak of humanity (second only to yourself, of course): petty house wars, conflicts for political gain, and so on and so forth... Pierce Brown finds yet more ways to show how ingrained the need for domination and hierarchical thinking is within Gold society—and how, in their arrogance, some of them even believe themselves to be just. We still follow Darrow, who has shed the tiny bit of Gary Stu-ness he had in the last book, while still pursuing the same goal—but now with even higher stakes. That’s all I’ll say about the plot—go read it. Do yourself the favour. Some might call this a hot take, but this series is everything Babel by R.F. Kuang thematically wanted to be, just leagues better: How far do you need to go in order to go from systematic oppression to a just society? How much violence is too much? Does it break you in the end? Can you break the cycle of violence, even if it means not enacting revenge? Sure, the Red Rising series is completely divorced from real-life history, but that gives it the opportunity to be more than just a series of scenes where the author shouts at us about how messed up oppression is.
This book was as fast paced as the first one and the plot well thought out. I just cannot stand Darrow's obnoxious speech making! He's basically a Mary-Sue, perfect, flaw-less with some angst thrown in when you know he's gonna succeed even when he fails. He's just too arrogant and takes the moral high ground. I think I wouldn't mind if the book wasn't told from his perspective but being in his head and hearing his self-righteous and peacocky thoughts just got on my nerves. That said, I really like Sevro and his father. If this book was told from his perspective I would have loved it.
Das Buch und alles, was darin passiert ist, hat mich so wütend gemacht. Was für ein schlimme Welt Die Handlungen finde ich spannend, die Geschichte ist mitreißend, aber einige Stellen ziehen sich so extrem, dass ich kaum Lust habe weiterzulesen, obwohl es eigentlich echt gut ist. Ich hoffe das wird in den nächsten Teilen nicht noch schlimmer, denn die werden immer dicker
Second Part of the Red Rising Series and the struggle continues. Darrow is now Part of his arch enemy family and the battles continue. Not only his seeking for revenge but the inner fights within the diffrent families and the society itself culminate and i cannot wait for the third part. I'm still in love with the roman mythology meets space adventure meets dystopian setting. Really, really great!
