Much Ado About Nothing

Erfrischend für Zwischendurch

Mein zweites Stück von Shakespeare und auch das fand ich super! Fand ich persönlich ein wenig schwieriger zu lesen, da mir die Handlung komplett unbekannt war, trotzdem hatte ich viel Spaß dabei und konnte es recht schnell weglesen. Zur Handlung will ich gar nicht so viel sagen weil es sonst bisschen zu spoilery wäre, aber auch hier gilt wieder: Man muss sich vor allem auf die Sprache und den Stil einlassen. Bin sehr gespannt auf mein drittes Shakespeare Stück!

Beatrice ist mein Favorit Charakter in diesem Stück von William Shakespeare. Sie lehnt die Ehe vehement ab und kann Benedick überhaupt nicht leiden. Der scharfzüngige Junggeselle hat auch alles andere im Kopf als Heiraten. Dennoch werden sie ihre Gefühle durch einer List gewahr. Im Gegensatz dessen sind Claudio und Hero durchaus bewusst wie sie zu einander stehen und wollen so schnell möglichst heiraten. Jedoch versucht ein anderer die Glückseligkeit zu unterbinden. Hero wird beschuldigt etwas getan zu haben, dass sie nun mit Hilfe versucht zu entkräften. Dafür taucht sie unter und täuscht selbst ihrem Geliebten Claudio ihren Tod vor.

I mean…it’s my favourite Shakespeare play so I obviously had my yearly re-read and watched the iconic David Tennant and Cathrine Tate adaptation. Kudos to Shakespeare inventing the enemies to lover trope. Loved it as always! Didn’t care about anyone else but Beatrice and Benedick obviously.

Wie fast immer bei Dramen kann „Much ado about nothing“ erst dann so richtig glänzen, wenn man es auf der Bühne gespielt sieht. Beim reinen Lesen funktioniert der Humor deutlich weniger, die Komik und Absurdität mancher Szenen kommt nicht rüber, selbst die Wortgefechte zwischen Beatrice und Benedick verlieren an Charme. Daher, für das reine Stück: 3 Sterne. Da gibt es einfach allein bei Shakespeare andere Dramen, die auch beim Lesen besser funktionieren (Hamlet, zum Beispiel). Wer allerdings die zurecht berühmte Inszenierung mit David Tennant und Catherine Tate gesehen hat, wird wissen dass dieses Stück auf der Bühne mal mindestens 4 Sterne verdient. Kleiner Tipp: es gibt eine Hörbuchversion, in der zwar Catherine Tate nicht Beatrice spielt, aber David Tennant Benedick. Diejenigen, die nicht auf den Text angewiesen sind um das Stück zu verstehen, sollten auf jeden Fall dazu greifen (oder alternativ erst lesen und dann hören).

I read this in preparation before seeing the play portrayed on stage and I must say it was okay. Nothing out of the ordinary, but also not underwhelming if that makes sense. You can definitely tell that this was the blueprint for many stories of our modern age. But I think an issue that I have with Shakespearean plays is that they are too short and abrupt for my taste. Granted, the shortcoming of the descriptions left a lot of room for imagination, but it also made some situations a little less believable. Either way, I think if you are looking to get into Shakespeares works, this is probably the best to start with, since it is the most comedy packed in my opinion!

I loved this so much, I basically became a teachers pet during my English classes. thanks Shakespeare, because of you, I got beaten up after school

In this edition they left out Borachio's speech at then end before the watch and therefore the notion that it was alone Don John's plan isn't as emphasised as in the Cambridge Edition. All in all, best play ever! :-D

i like this play, but not as much as the first one i've read by shakespeare. i guess there were too many things which i don't support as a person. i know that it was written a long LONG time ago, but it was hard for me to read about them anyway.
