The Atlantic Ocean, 1776

Together, Etta and Nicholas must embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together her mother's clues to find a stolen astrolabe with the power to change everything. But as Etta plays deeper into Ironwoods' game, treacherous forces threaten to separate her not only from Nicholas, but from her own time - forever.

Same old same old.

Abgebrochen.

You can watch my video review here: http://youtu.be/s28mNdskehM :) I feel so bad giving this book only 2 stars but this book was honestly nothing more than OK. I had a lot of problems with Passenger and I don't understand the overhyped ratings and praises. Maybe I'm in the minority here but this story was boring and dragged on for far too long. Eventually the story got interesting but after more than 300 pages. And that is a lot when you think about that the whole book has 486 pages. So what is it that makes this book deserve 2 stars? The Time Travel was so promising but such a let-down For me the time travel felt like a filler for the love story between Etta and Nicholas. It was so promising and I actually enjoyed the system and everything we learned about it but the time travel itself was so unnecessary. Etta and Nicholas jump into one passage after another and we're left with a few pages of WWII, the jungle of Cambodia, a total redundant storyline in Paris to mention a few of them. But the overall plotline was just lacking in depth. There was no connection for me This is something that really caught me off-guard. I hardly never have problems connecting with the protagonist or the characters overall but this time it was so difficult for me. I don't know if it has something to do with that the story was told in third-person or that the slowness of the plot really bugged me but I never really felt invested in their future. And the most terrible thing about that is that I really liked Etta and Nicholas as a character. But the story really lacked significance. And I did not enjoy the wailing of both of them about their "insta-love" relationship. It was a constant debatte about if they should be together and how they would make it work. The unrealistic "smells" I don't know why this stressed me out so much but I couldn't stand that Alexandra Bracken always mentions "toothbrushes" and that Etta smells like roses and Nicholas after sea salt. That sounds ridiculous but let me explain. Imagine being stranded somewhere in 1800 without a toothbrush or any body hygiene (maybe an occasional bath). How would you feel about yourself? I would definitely feel insecure about myself and I know that Etta feels the same way because she mentions 3-4 times that she is in need of a toothbrush. So how on earth does she feel so comfortable making out with Nicholas all the time? And why on earth does Nicholas always describes that Etta smells after Roses or flowers or what the hell. That is just not true. Why should she smell like roses after they travel weeks without regular showers and constantly strolling through mud and filth. And Nicholas will definitely not smell after freaking sea salt! He's not on a boat any more. His individual scent will not be sea salt, damn it... I just don't get it. Like I said I don't know why but those little details were so confusing and unrealistic for me that I got seriously angry about this book. If Alexandra wouldn't mention toothbrush, bad breath and smell the whole time I would definitely haven't thought about it at all. But still the ending was better... The last 180 pages or something were actually quite enjoyable. Alexandra created a lot of suspense in the ending and I enjoyed the twist and the revelation tremendously. I'll read the second book because of the sneaky cliffhanger and I hope that it will improve greatly. I think "Passenger" has a serious First-Book-Problem so let's see what happens in the second book.

I love every time travel book to a certain point (especially as I get confused about the rules eventually) and therefore really enjoyed the different times and location. As much as I like the main characters I did not really feel their chemistry and the development of their relationship missed some steps in my opinion. I enjoyed the book nevertheless and will probably pick up the second book because I'm too curious.
