Description
London, 1812. Oliver Bennet feels trapped. Not just by the endless corsets, petticoats and skirts he's forced to wear on a daily basis, but also by society's expectations. The world-and the vast majority of his family and friends-think Oliver is a girl named Elizabeth. He is therefore expected to mingle at balls wearing a pretty dress, entertain suitors regardless of his interest in them, and ultimately become someone's wife.
But Oliver can't bear the thought of such a fate. He finds solace in the few times he can sneak out of his family's home and explore the city rightfully dressed as a young gentleman. It's during one such excursion when Oliver becomes acquainted with Darcy, a sulky young man who had been rude to "Elizabeth" at a recent social function. But in the comfort of being out of the public eye, Oliver comes to find that Darcy is actually a sweet, intelligent boy with a warm heart. And not to mention incredibly attractive.
As Oliver is able to spend more time as his true self, often with Darcy, part of him dares begin to hope that his dream of love and life as a man could be possible. But suitors are growing bolder-and even threatening-and his mother is growing more desperate to see him settled into an engagement. Oliver will have to choose: Settle for safety, security, and a life of pretending to be something he's not, or risk it all for a slim chance at freedom, love, and a life that can be truly, honestly his own.

English isn't my first language so this review isn't perfectly written! Sorry
It was really amazing! I read the book in just two days and the only reason why I didn't read it in one sitting, was because I sadly need sleep. On top of that I hadn't read anything in the past weeks and the book pulled me out of my readingblok. Another aspect. I didn't like the ending because the mother just changed her whole charackter on one site.I would still recommend it if you want to read a bl book but some historical things are overshadowed or ignored, so if you're a lot into history don't take it to sireusly. Another thing I must mention is that I never read pride or prejudice so I don't know how close it is to that book.
Wholesome and warm
I picked up this book because I love pride and prejudice, and the whole empowered character that Elisabeth is in the original. Also because the plot of this book sounded very intriguing. After finishing the book it just left me with a very warm feeling in my heart and water in my eyes. Of course the book is fiction and has a few plot holes here and there but I loved to read about Oliver and his story. I thoroughly enjoyed papa Bennett being the most accepting man ever and how the story was spun. It is a great book for in between and sth you can just read for comfort.
"I just don't believe any of us should have to accept circumstances that will stand in the way of our happiness."
"How can you better the future if you continue mimicking the past?" As someone who is queer and has a deep-rooted love for the original Pride and Prejudice this book was the perfect mix between familiar comfort and a new, layered perspective. I loved the balance this book manages to keep between staying true to the original and changing the narrative in a way that felt new and wonderful and rooted in the perspective change the premise promised. In a way it feels like Pride and Prejudice fanfiction (which mind you is a delightful thing, because already knowing these characters only adds to rediscovering them in this alternate universe!). It was an incredibly cosy read with lots of heart. I loved the mix between old English expressions and descriptions that felt a little more modern and utterly relatable. The themes of the book were handled with lots of care and from a place of deep understanding and community. I love that Oliver and Darcy got a happy ending. We deserve sappy queer stories that don't end in tragedy! "I'd rather be secretly happy with you than openly living a lie." Mr Bennett being the father of the year on all the occasions made me cry several times and I love him for it.
This book will remind you in a gentle yet firm way that representation matters✨
The story has been told a thousand times, so I didn’t expect to be swept off my feet. Combined with a fairly simple yet accessible language and writing style, this book's strongest quality is the experience of queer life. I personally don’t care about historical accuracy and just went with the story, which has its problems, especially in the middle. Some characters and dynamics are underdeveloped, and some conflicts are too smoothly resolved, but the second half really pulled the emotional weight of the story, which I didn’t expect anymore at this point. Oliver’s conflict with the expectations of society, doomed to be someone’s wife to secure a future, yet not seeing a future in not being himself even if it would be a love match, is the main issue from the beginning and is viewed and explored from multiple angles throughout the book. „The future that most people envisioned for Oliver - it wasn’t one he could accept. It would destroy him, he was sure, if not physically, then spiritually. And what kind of life could one have with a crushed soul?“ The insight into Oliver’s thoughts and feelings along this issue with family, friends, strangers, and himself really hit, as you can’t help but think that those are real struggles for people nowadays, who are still not allowed and encouraged to be themselves. So funnily enough for me, the moments when this book pulled me into reality, I liked it the most. I am glad this story had a happy ending.
If you ignore all the historical inaccuracies, the one-dimensional side characters, and the self-centeredness of the main character, it's not too bad. I haven't read or watched Pride and Prejudice, however, I still found there to be too many historical inaccuracies. The writing itself oftentimes felt too modern and too much like a fanfiction. All the characters seemed to only have one to two personality traits, especially the female ones. Those gave the impression of merely existing to support the MC's journey. Unfortunately, the MC's journey was lacklustre as well. The romance with Darcy happened too fast. Almost immediately they were attracted to each other and madly infatuated after a short amount of time. They did have a few sweet moments, but hardly talked and I don't understand why they would develop feelings that quickly without really knowing each other. I wish we saw more of their developing relationship. The end felt a little sudden and the reaction of Mrs. Bennet after finding out that Oliver is a boy, felt out of character. It could have been such a great story, but for that, the book would have to be longer and the characters more dimensional. In summary, if you ignore all the bad things and only focus on the few sweet moments between Oliver and Darcy, it's quite good!
Amazing book! I spent a lot of the time while I was reading with grinning, giggling, but also feeling furious for the characters (depending on the given situations). Despite everything, I think the ending felt a bit rushed. Not full 5☆ because I have read books that were slightly better, but it was a book that was hard to put down!
I haven't read a romance novel that I liked this much in a while. While I cannot speak as to whether this is in any way faithful to the classic it's based on, as I haven't read it myself, what I can say is that I loved this so much. The romance was delightfully fluffy and I was actually giggling and kicking my feet at their flirting/ bantering. And the way (the majority of) the other characters treated Oliver's transness was heartwarming.
