“Readers seeking a truly refreshing fantasy milieu should travel to Bulikov, and welcome its conquest.”—N. K. Jemison, The New York Times
With the gods on its side, the city of Bulikov was once rich beyond measure, using the power of the heavens to reign over the Continent—until a desperate people rose up and did the impossible, killing its divine protectors. Now the surreal landscape of the city itself—first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it—stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy.
Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani. Officially, the unassuming young woman is just another junior diplomat sent by Bulikov's oppressors. Unofficially, she is one of her country's most accomplished spies, dispatched to catch a murderer. But as Shara pursues the killer, she starts to suspect that the beings who ruled this terrible place may not be as dead as they seem—and that Bulikov's cruel reign may not yet be over.
“A great world, original and unique, with a scent and a texture, a sense of deep, bloody history, and a naturally blended magic living in the stones.”—NPR

ARC provided by Netgalley This book got high praises by FBC and I saw it was available on Netgally, so I tried my luck and luckily received a copy. Robert Jackson Bennett used the hook, line sinker method perfectly in this novel. The hook is a very cleverly done introduction to the world, in a unique way, that instantly sparked my interest. The line is the entrance of our main character Shara. Refreshing to see a strong and intelligent female lead character and not a teenage one at that. The sinker is the amazing world Bennett created. This too, feels pleasantly fresh. It's a mix of urban fantasy with a technological advanced society and standard fantasy elements. The whole history surrounding the world is very interesting and get's explored a lot. The story is very well paced and keeps a narrow focus on the main character, no complex multi layered PoV strands. Overall a very entertaining novel, with great characters, a gripping story and a rich world. What more could you possibly want? Even though it will not come out until September you should definitely put it on your to-read list! Highly recommended
