The Restaurant of Lost Recipes

All in all a fun little read. But there was so much focus on the food, that the authour kind of forgot to build a coherent story around it. Each chapter follows a different character, although you can sense the potential of their story, it doesn’t go deeper than surface level. That makes their stories feel kind of flat. And because the characters are not linked together, we start each chapter anew, which gets kind of boring as we always read the same reactions to the restaurant (it’s unassuming) the cat (it’s cute but not allowed in) the food (the best they ever tasted, to which Nagare always responds, that it’s nothing much) and the mission ahead (it’s going to be tricky) And I think even that would have been fine, if their stories would have a lasting effect on the main characters but even they felt like NPCs. They exist in relation to their visitors but behind that, they apparently have no life. We learn nothing about them apart from the dead mum/wife and that the daughter is not married. So while the food descriptions were very interesting, it is hard to build a story solely on that.

Buch wurde von mir auf englisch gelesen. Das Buch ist mindestens genauso „süß“ und „cozy“ wie der erste Band, aber ich muss ehrlich zugeben, dass mich beim zweiten Teil das ständige Frönen der Ingredienzien fast ein Stück weit genervt hat. Diese Passagen habe ich oft mit einem Seufzen überflogen, teilweise sogar fast überlesen. Die Geschichten – die Schicksale hinter den Rezeptwünschen – sind wieder sehr gut gelungen und regen zum Nachdenken an. Dennoch bleibt nach zwei Bänden alles irgendwie sehr oberflächlich. Die Handlung wird immer schnell abgehandelt, und vieles wiederholt sich oft (zum Beispiel die Interaktionen mit der Katze oder die Fragen der Kunden, wenn sie an der Fotowand vorbeigehen). Ob ich den zweiten Teil empfehle? Jain. Bei insgesamt 12 Fällen, die im Grunde alle nach dem gleichen Schema ablaufen, ist man wahrscheinlich mit einem Band schon mehr als bedient. Auch aufgewärmtes essen hat seinen Charme, hier allerdings leider nicht :/
