“A full banquet. As a mystery novel—no, as a novel pure and simple—A Place of Hiding is entertainment of a high order.”—The Washington Post

An isolated beach on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel is the scene of the murder of Guy Brouard, one of Guernsey’s wealthiest inhabitants and its main benefactor. Forced as a child to flee the Nazis in Paris, Brouard was engaged in his latest project when he died: a museum honoring those who resisted the German occupation of the island during World War II. It is from this period that his murderer may well have come. But there are others on Guernsey who want Guy Brouard dead. As forensic scientist Simon St. James and his wife, Deborah, soon discover, seemingly everyone on the history-haunted island has something to hide. . . . And behind all the lies and alibis, a killer is lurking.

Simon St. James and his wife Deborah are helping China River, an american friend of Deborah. China is arrested for the murder of Guy Brouard, a self made millionaire. living on the island of Guernsey. The way in which the old man was killed is mysterious enough, but the social surroundings of him, with several lovers, a former wife, a son and a sick sister make a spider web in which the St. James seem to be lost. Another book of Elizabeth George which is too long. 630 pages are at least 200 too much. I got bored and skipped several sections. The stories besides the story are not fitting. George did this much better in her earlier books. This one here is number ten of the Lynley-Havers-St. James books.
