About the book

The first book in an epic new series about a princess hiding a dark secret and the con man she must trust to clear her name for her father's murder.

In the Cyrilian Empire, Affinites are reviled. Their varied gifts to control the world around them are deemed unnatural—even dangerous. And Anastacya Mikhailov, the crown princess, is one of the most terrifying Affinites.

Ana’s ability to control blood has long been kept secret, but when her father, the emperor, is murdered, she is the only suspect. Now, to save her own life, Ana must find her father’s killer. But the Cyrilia beyond the palace walls is one where corruption rules and a greater conspiracy is at work—one that threatens the very balance of Ana’s world.

There is only one person corrupt enough to help Ana get to the conspiracy’s core: Ramson Quicktongue. Ramson is a cunning crime lord with sinister plans—though he might have met his match in Ana. Because in this story, the princess might be the most dangerous player of all.

DNF at 30% I've tried really hard to like it, so I'm having a hard time cutting short my read of this book because I still like the concept and I love the worldbuilding, but every part of plot that isn't worldbuilding bores me. At a quarter through this book, nothing of interest has happened, the scenes are long, but don't evolve the plot much. We had two chapter-long flashbacks, which took up a decent chunk of the time without adding all that much to the plot. This could have been short flashes and hints throughout the other chapters. And I'm not all that invested in the characters yet either. Ana a bit, sure, but May and Ramson still seem very flat.  I think my problem is that I don't feel much of a "drive" in this book yet. Even the little that the plot advances, feels a bit passive at the moment. Browsing through the reviews to decide if I want to continue reading (to see if my experience is likely to get better), made me aware of a controversy about this book, which I don't quite understand, as this book is so very obviously about modern-day human trafficking and not about slavery. And from my limited knowledge of a few documentaries watched about the topic, the book seems rather spot-on about it. All in all, I don't have specific gripes about this book why I stopped reading, I was just so bored. The pace might just be too slow for me, but the plot has failed to keep me invested. The worldbuilding is definitely top-notch tho, and I wish I found the book interesting enough to find out more about this and what this book has to say about human trafficking.

Also erst 4, dann 3.5, dann 3.
