der erste plottwist hat mich umgehauen, nach dem gab es keine plötzlichen und überraschenden dinge mehr, alles war vorhersehbar. die figuren ließen mich nicht in ihre herzen, berührten nicht meines. und das ende war abrupt, wie ein schmerzhaft abgerissenes pflaster. schade, dabei hat es vielversprechend angefangen!
Vorneweg: The Wife Between Us ist nichts für schwache Nerven. Häusliche Gewalt spielt eine Rolle, weswegen ich das Buch zwischendurch auch zur Seite legen musste. Es geht um Nellie, die kurz vor ihrer Hochzeit mit dem wohlhabenden, charmanten Richard steht. Dessen eifersüchtige und verrückte Exfrau Vanessa will diese allerdings verhindern. So scheint es zumindest. Tatsächlich ist es jedoch die Geschichte zweier Frauen, die langsam erkennen, was für ein Monster sie geheiratet haben beziehungsweise im Begriff stehen zu heiraten. Dieser Roman lohnt sich, da er einfach so unglaublich gut geschrieben ist und man vor Spannung kaum blinzeln will. Zwischendurch ist man manchmal verwirrt, bis man die Genialität des Plottwists erkennt. Das Thema ist so unglaublich brutal und schrecklich, aber zu lesen, wie Frauen sich trotz ihrer Angst dagegen wehren und am Ende siegen, lässt hoffen.
This wasn't the most exciting read. I find it kind of strange that this book is marketed as a thriller or even a mystery. The 'twists' were very easy to figure out and the plot was slow-moving. I did like the main character at least, most of the time. The story reminds me of one of the sub-plots in Big Little Lies and I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if it was marketed as a slow-moving contemporary drama.
Just another rip-off of "Gone Girl". Since "Gone Girl" I have the feeling that some thrillers want to copy the intriguing twists of it where everything is not as it seems. "The Wife Between Us" just tries this too hard. None of the characters are relatable, whatsoever and just feel like cartooncharacters. The so-called first part of the book went on to have no function at all just to force some kind of mystery on the reader. Meet Vanessa, before and after the breakup with Richard, some Mary-Sue, the author forced a backstory on that didn't make me feel a thing. She and her friends are all really bland, allthough there were so many things happening that should've make me feel things, like her affair with a professor, her mom's depresssion. All the events just felt really forced to me, like someone had read about those things or watched a movie about it and then just copied it into the book. They don't convey emotions a thriller desperately needs. Which brings me to Richard. First description and you just know he is an abusive asshole. I know they wanted a too perfect man but this would've worked so much better if Richard seemed human and the reader would start to question its own perception. Richard's just your typical Christian Grey and boring to death. It had its moments in portraying an abusive relationship with all the gaslighting and questioning one's own sanity, I have to give the book that. Other than that, Richard wasn't well written. His mind-games were too well planned and while some abusers learn over the years to control themselves and keep their abusive side more subtle, I always feel like the psychological abuse happens because they cannot help themselves, and not because they plan to make their wife look stupid etc. The last twist just seemed like a desperate try to get some sense into her backstory at college in Florida. Overall a very clumsy composed book.
Ich hatte riesige Erwartungen, nachdem das Buch ja so extrem gehypt wurde. Sie wurden nicht ganz erfüllt, aber mir hat das Buch sehr gut gefallen: * Als Hörbuch zu empfehlen, da die Sprecherin toll ist * Psychospielchen vom Feinsten (wer Blut erwartet ist hier falsch!) * Das Setting New York hat mich natürlich auch begeistert * Hin und wieder hat es so seine Längen Es geht halt in die Richtung von Gone Girl und Saving Grace - Nicht 100%ig mein Genre, aber hin und wieder ganz nett. Spannend war es allemal, da man ständig überlegt wer in der Geschichte denn nun der wirkliche Psycho ist. Den Epilig fand ich auch sehr cool, also unbedingt zuende lesen bzw. hören.
I feel like the first big twist was quite unnecessary for the plot, it just was confusing and did not add something to the story. I also wouldn't consider this a real thriller somehow. It was just a toxic love triangle and I missed the thrill at some times. What kept me reading is the great writing style.
Another book that my friend and I were reading together at the beginning of this year and we really enjoyed this one even though the ending was a little bit too fast and the rest of the book seemed a little bit stretched out therefore we were having a little bit of a hard time with it in the beginning and also at the ending because it felt like we still had open questions but never got the answers to them but still it was a fast paced. We enjoyed the audiobook of it and definitely something we would recommend

Während Vanessa ihrem perfekten Leben mit Richard nachtrauert, über die Scheidung noch nicht wirklich hinweg ist und erst einmal wieder beginnen muss, zu leben; ist Nellie absolut glücklich mit Richard - wären da nicht mysteriöse Vorfälle, die sie sich nicht erklären kann. Vanessas einzige Hoffnung ist noch, Richards baldige Hochzeit zu verhindern. Doch da ist auch noch Emma, die einen Brief bekommt, der ihr sagt, sie müsse dringend die Wahrheit über Richard erfahren. Es ist schwierig, mehr zum Inhalt dieses Buches zu sagen, ohne wichtige Informationen vorweg zu nehmen, deswegen habe ich mich auch grob am Klappentext orientiert. Es handelt sich hier um einen Roman, der meiner Meinung nach aber eher ein Mini-Psychothriller ist. Allein die seltsamen Vorgänge bei Nellie (Dinge verschwinden, Tiere verschwinden, mysteriöse Anrufe) reichen dafür schon aus. Aber auch die Art und Weise, wie Vergangenheit und Zukunft aufeinander einwirken – die wahren Auswirkungen werden erst ganz am Ende offensichtlich - sprechen schon sehr für einen Thriller. Ich konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen, wusste auch nie, wie weit ich den Berichten der einzelnen Frauen wirklich trauen kann, schließlich war vor allem bei Vanessa offensichtlich, dass sie enorm am Boden zerstört ist, so dass man sich nicht sicher sein kann, ob sie Tatsachen verdreht oder sie sich nur eingebildet hat und ähnliches geschieht dann auch bei Nellie. Ich fand es unglaublich spannend, ein echter Pageturner und das Ende war echt überraschend und einige Twists waren wirklich unvorhersehbar und deswegen genial.
This book was another book that I was reading together with my friend from the US and we both listened to the audiobook edition of it. Let’s say the book was really enjoyable and we both really really liked it. However the ending was a little bit fast and the rest of the book seemed a little bit stretched therefore the ending came faster than we both thought it would be. But we both enjoyed it and it was definitely a five star read for both of us.
