Ich war relativ gespannt auf die Geschichte, weil sich der Klappentext sehr viel versprechend angehört hat. Mit dem Schreibstil hatte ich am Anfang ein paar Schwierigkeiten, aber das hat sich nach einer Weile gelegt bzw. Ich habe mich daran gewöhnt. Er war flüssig. Die Idee mit den ganzen Lärm in der Stadt finde ich gut, weil es mal was anderes war als man sonst so liest. Mir hat trotzdem die Umsetzung nicht ganz so gefallen. Ich hatte irgendwie andere Erwartungen an der Idee. Zwischenzeitlich war ich verwirrt und kam nicht mehr mit. Es gab wenige spannende Situationen und Szenen aber die wurde relativ schnell „abgearbeitet“. Irgendwann hat die Spannung leider komplett gefehlt. Das Ende des Buches hat mir nicht gefallen und bin sogar ein klein wenig davon enttäuscht. Es gab Momente wo ich überlegt habe dieses Buch abzubrechen, weil es mich nicht mehr angesprochen hat. Aber ich bin kein Fan davon einfach ein Buch abzubrechen. Ich bin etwas traurig darüber, dass mir das Buch doch nicht so gefallen hat wie ich es mir gewünscht habe.
Ja, das Buch ist etwas eigenartig - denn es ist so anders als seine Genre-Genossen. Die vielen negativen Rezensionen kann ich aber nicht nachvollziehen. Wenn man sich auf die Geschichte einlässt, fliegt man nur so durch die Seiten. Die sprechenden Tiere, das Geheimnis um Prentisstown, das Mysterium um das stille Mädchen und die blutige Verfolgungsjagd nahmen mich gefangen und entwickelten sich zum wahren Pageturner. Schriftstellerisch hätte man es wohl nicht besser machen können. 5 von 5 Sterne!
4,5 ⭐️ I have a long story with this series. A year ago I discovered it on Bookstagram, got curious and bought it. But it was full of deliberately misspelled words like „conversayshun“ and I really couldn‘t stand that, so I stopped reading it. Only many positive reviews on Goodreads made me giving it a second chance. I learned that almost all of the readers were annoyed - at the beginning. I got convinced that it will get better. So, yes, I gave it another try - and I loved it! The misspelled words were always the same ones so at some point they didn’t bother me anymore and I even got used to them. And apart from the misspellings I loved everything about the book. Patrick Ness created interesting characters in a fascinating, new world. Let’s start with Todd. It’s hard to describe my feelings about him, as he is somehow pretty weird. But regarding his age and his hometown I can‘t really blame him. Also, the longer I got to read about him I liked him more and more. Next ist Manchee and he is simply great and I effing (yes, effing) love that Patrick Ness gave him a voice too. Viola is the complete opposite to Todd which leads to inevitble funny interactions for the readers. I hope to get to know her even better in the next two books. I’m an emotional kind of person and I really love books that make me cry - and hell, I cried so much because of that book.

And then I read 479 pages just so I could end up where the story started at? For what? I'm sorry, but this wasn't for me apparently, really hoped I'd feel different about it but whoops.
Nah. Didn't like this one. I am even going to do something I haven't done in a long time: I am not going to finish this series. It's not the story itself that didn't do it for me, it's the writing style. I see what the author tried to do here, really. Todd has his own voice, his own way of telling his story. But the grammar and the misspelling of words was getting on my nerves so much that I couldn't enjoy the story.

I'm not a fan of this. The writing absolutely irritated me (for example ‘attenshun’). I don’t like the characters at all but this could be because I’m not a fan of 13-years-old protagonists. The worst thing about the book is, in my opinion, that he’s being chased for nearly 500 pages. For 500 pages, he’s constantly on the run and nothing else is happening. And the ‘villains’ of the book are not evil enough to make this chase seem interesting. However, I bought the entire trilogy, so I continue this series.
