The story begins with Clara del Valle, a clairvoyant girl whose quiet powers of observation anchor the novel. Her marriage to the brooding Esteban Trueba sets off a domino effect: wealth, cruelty, obsession, and change. Esteban builds an estate on sheer force of will, yet can’t see the emotional ruin he causes in his wake. Their children, sensitive Nana, rebellious Blanca, and fiery Alba, navigate love and political upheaval as the country swings toward revolution. By the end, tragedy begets transformation: Alba suffers, survives, and through her voice, the family learns forgiveness. The spirits don’t fix everything, but they sure keep score. It’s almost unfair how Allende wraps political critique, psychic aunts, and stubborn old men into a narrative that feels both sweeping and intimately human, essentially historical fiction with heart and haunting.
3.5* The House of the Spirits ist ein Buch das schwierig zu erklären ist für mich. Es ist nicht die Art von Buch die ich normalerweise lese. Es erzählt die Geschichte von mehreren Generationen einer Familie, die Geschichte hat einige magische Elemente ist jedoch ansonsten sehr realistisch, teilweise erschreckend realistisch und um einiges düsterer als ich erwartet hatte. Es gibt einige ziemlich explizite Beschreibungen von Gewalt und Vergewaltigungen. Das Buch ist somit keine leichte Lektüre, doch es lohnt sich. Während mir der Einstieg noch etwas schwer fiel mochte ich wie sich später die Geschichten der einzelnen Familienmitglieder ineinander verwoben und sich immer wieder spiegelten. Das Buch ist zudem voller faszinierender Figuren, auch wenn diese nicht immer unbedingt sympathisch (oder teilweise sogar sehr unsympathisch) sind, besonders zu sehen wie sich die verschiedenen Generationen entwickeln war faszinierend. Zudem spielen auch Politik und politische Konflikte in der Geschichte eine wichtige und interessante Rolle, besonders da sich viele Figuren auch politisch betätigen und dabei ziemlich unterschiedliche Sichtweisen vertreten. Auch wenn mich nicht alle Aspekte der Geschichte überzeugen konnten ist The House of the Spirits ein faszinierendes Buch, welches mir bestimmt noch lange im Gedächtnis bleiben wird.
