Der Garten Eden ist ein Werk Hemingways, an dem er angeblich 40 Jahre gearbeitet, es aber nie veröffentlicht hat. Erst in den 1980er Jahren erschien das Werk posthum in einer von anderen Autoren überarbeiteten Fassung. In der Handlung geht es um ein Ehepaar, bei dem die Frau sich mit ihrer eigenen Sexualität und Geschlecht auseinandersetzt. Der Protagonist, der auch Autor ist, steht dem kritisch gegenüber und beginnt mit dem Einverständnis der Ehefrau eine Affäre. So bleibt die gesamte Handlung eine "Ménage a trois". Trotz Rassismus, Sexismus und anderen Diskriminierungsformen, die bei Hemingway mehr oder weniger stärker ausgeprägt sind, gelingt es ihm, Themen wie Sexualität, Geschlechterrollen und Beziehungskonstruktionen anzusprechen, die in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunders eher unbeachtet bleiben in der damaligen Gesellschaft.
What I felt when reading this the first time can be easily summarized in fewer words: Hemingway cannot write women. His strengths are super masculine things like matador, fishing, whining about absent daddies. Definitely not writing women. (Old review: Rather read one of his short stories! There are only a few positive things found in "The Garden of Eden", Hemingways writing style, the setting of the novel in France and Spain and the descriptions of their landscapes. The rest is rather dull and a bit too sexual. To summarize the novel: Eating, drinking, f*cking. It isn't really more than that. No deep character devlopement with child-like dialogues and characters that act more like puppets than like real human beings. The themes explored in the book are interesting but Hemingway doesn't use their full potential and rather wrote some pseudo-erotic novel. "The Garden of Eden" is weaker in style than most of his other works.)
