King's Cage

Mare Barrow goes through her biggest character development yet. She grows so much, despite her trauma. She has been put through hell, but she doesn't let herself get sucked into the void. She still loves and doesn't lose hope. I loved the fact that she is portrayed in fear lots of time, her fear brings out her deepest survival instincts, giving her a shot of winning the battle against her enemies. She fights with her mind and with her body to not become trapped in a prison, mentally and physically. And Cal the romantic, strong, intelligent, caring, naive, hot, intense, good silver Prince. His hope for Maven is crushing. His friendship with Kilorn warms my heart. But hell he's still Prince Tiberias the Seventh and his identity bites everyone in the ass, especially himself. And he can be an idiot at times! But the romance between him and Mare melted my heart. The mutual support, the understanding, the goofiness, the sexiness, the courage to break stereotypes. And can we talk about the flawless construction of Evangeline Samos? She is still a quintessential bitch. But I adored how she evolved from a queen-wannabe that has only arrogance, ambition and jealousy as main traits to a deeply intriguing, multi-layered anti-heroine. We get her POV as well, not to see from a different perspective, but to offer even more glimpses into a universe governed by politics, secrets, manipulation, and power. 

Goldener Käfig von Victoria Aveyard bildet den emotionalen und thematischen Höhepunkt der Red-Queen-Reihe. Dieser Teil konzentriert sich stark auf die psychologischen Folgen von Machtmissbrauch, Verrat und Gefangenschaft und erzählt Mares Geschichte deutlich ruhiger, aber intensiver als die vorherigen Bände. Die Handlung spielt größtenteils in einem begrenzten Raum, was die beklemmende Atmosphäre verstärkt und den Fokus auf innere Konflikte legt. Besonders eindrucksvoll war für mich die Darstellung von Mares innerem Zerfall und ihrer langsamen, schmerzhaften Selbstfindung. Die Autorin zeigt hier schonungslos, wie Kontrolle, Manipulation und Isolation einen Menschen verändern können. Die Beziehung zwischen Mare und Maven steht dabei im Zentrum und ist geprägt von Machtspielen, Abhängigkeit und emotionaler Grausamkeit. Action tritt in den Hintergrund, dafür gewinnen Charakterentwicklung und psychologische Spannung deutlich an Gewicht. Der Goldener Käfig ist zurückhaltend und atmosphärisch, stellenweise fast klaustrophobisch. Dieser Teil fordert Geduld und könnte dem ein oder anderen „langatmig“ erscheinen, belohnt jedoch mit Tiefe und emotionaler Intensität. Als dritter Band ist er weniger auf äußere Handlung als auf innere Entwicklung ausgerichtet und stellt einen wichtigen Wendepunkt der Reihe dar. Goldener Käfig ist kein leichter, aber ein mutiger Roman, der zeigt, dass Freiheit nicht nur physisch, sondern vor allem mental erkämpft werden muss. Obwohl dieser Band der ruhigste bisher war, konnte er mich emotional direkt treffen und hat mich sprachlos stehen lassen.

Das war ja mal was... Leider hat sich die erste Hälfte extrem gezogen, man könnte mindestens 1/4 des Buches kürzen... Ansonsten hat mich die Geschichte auch hier in ihren Bann gezogen und vor allem finde ich, dass Maven ein sehr komplexer Charakter ist. Leider hat sich Cal auch in diesem Teil überhaupt nicht weiterentwickelt und obwohl er main love interest ist, bekommt man kaum etwas von ihm mit. Die politische Story finde ich sehr gut ausgearbeitet und interessant, dafür fehlt es den Charakteren etwas an Tiefe. Das Ende hat einen fiesen Cliffhanger, aber zum Glück gibt es ja noch das nächste Buch. 4/5⭐

You are a shadow to the person who is your sun“ - After reading “Glass sword” and being disappointed with it, i was keen to give the third book four stars. Especially after my friend encouraged me and told me that it would meet my expectations. However, it unfortunately did not. It improved only slightly considering that this time, we learned more about Maven’s past and the way he became this cold-hearted person. In addition, there were (this time!!) two scenes that got me tense and excited. But other than that I felt like the plot was honestly all over again very repetitive and predictable. Overall, they really gave the impression of only filling gaps and pages. Nevertheless, there were many quotes that will hold a special place in my heart. btw Farley is a baddie.

Ich mochte diesen Teil lieber als Buch 2. In der mitte hat es sich etwas gezogen,war aber nie uninteressant. Es ist aber noch Raum nach oben. Der vierte Teil liegt etwas weiter unten im tbr Stapel aber ich freue mich drauf

Schwieriges Buch. Generell spannender als das zweite. Wie auch alle anderen Bücher der Serie fängt das Buch erst sehr spät an wirklich spannend zu werden. Dazwischen ist es meistens sehr langweilig und ich für meinen Teil habe habe bei jedem Buch gestruggled es nicht zu beenden. Die letzten 100 Seiten sind ähnlich wie im zweiten Band sehr spannend und regen einen an das nächste Buch auch auf jeden Fall zu lesen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob ich es lesen werde, da man blöderweise davon ausgeht das auch dieses Buch bis zu den letzten 100 Seiten ein Hard read wird🙇‍♀️ Generell finde ich die storyline mega cool, es ist einfach schade, dass man die Bücher nicht einfach ein bisschen kompakter schreibt. Damit kein hardread entsteht. Mein Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Für die storyline gebe ich die drei Sterne, da ich auch die charackter stärker beschrieben fand allerdings hab ich auch über 2 nachgedacht. Im Nachhinein würde ich den zweiten Band auf jeden Fall downgraden

Der Teil hat mir wieder besser gefallen als Band 2, da Mare ja zu Beginn eine Recht lange Zeit bei Maven im Palast war und ich ja absoluter Maven Fan bin

Bisher der schwächste Band der Reihe. Es fühlt sich beim Lesen nach einem Lückenfüller an. Als hätte man sich überlegt, die Story gibt zwar nicht soviel her, aber lass uns trotzdem einen ganzen Band daraus machen. Dementsprechend viele Wiederholungen und innere Monologe sind dabei. Und selbst die Szenen, in denen etwas passiert, bringen die Handlung kaum voran.

I liked this one better than book two. I mean I red it the year I bought it. It was a little like chewinggum in the middle but never boring. I always liked to read it.

Mixed feelings

After the second book I immediately ordered book 3 and 4. Glass Sword was great for crafting the characters, make you like with the world that's been built, but after the end of the second book, I didn't expect book three to be so slow-paced. There were some great moments in King's Cage, especially the scenes where we could learn about Maven's past and how he became who he is now. Sooo interesting! Then, barely anything happened until the end of the book. The second third of the book was rough to get through. I did like the way Mare's trauma was responded to, it felt realistic and sad, only experiencing the trauma after it's over. I also liked the scenes where Shade was mentioned, since the moment was always actually related to him and it wasn't just name-dropping to stop us from forgetting him. Towards the end it got more exciting, but with so much back and forth between the war fronts, I got a little bored. I had expected this to be at least 4.5 stars when I started this book, but 3.5 is all I have in me after I finished it. Still a good book, no question, but not what I had hoped it would be. Hopefully the last book will be better, though I'm kinda scared it won't.

Meiner Meinung nach das beste Buch aus der Reihe bisher. Mare fühlt sich endlich nicht mehr wie ein flacher Charakter an und durch den POV Wechsel zwischen den Kapiteln (Mare, Cameron und gegen Ende auch Evangeline), lernt man deutlich mehr über die Intrigen und die einzelnen Sichtweisen

German and English review 🇩🇪Deutsche Rezension: King’s Cage hat mich absolut überrascht – im allerbesten Sinne. Nach dem eher trägen zweiten Band war ich wirklich skeptisch. Aber dieser Teil hat meine Erwartungen bei Weitem übertroffen. Die Handlung ist voll von Spannung, Wendungen und Momenten, die einen nicht loslassen – ich konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen. Was mich besonders beeindruckt hat, war Mares Entwicklung. Zum ersten Mal hat man ihre Veränderung wirklich miterlebt – nicht nur, wie sie ihre Kräfte kontrolliert, sondern auch emotional: in ihren Beziehungen, im Umgang mit dem, was sie erlebt hat, und darin, wie sie ihre Verantwortung trägt. Es wirkte viel tiefgründiger und greifbarer als in den Bänden davor. Und das Ende? Damit hätte ich niemals gerechnet. Schockierend, emotional und genau der Cliffhanger, der einen sofort zum nächsten Buch greifen lässt. King’s Cage war für mich bisher das absolute Highlight der Reihe – ganz klare 5 Sterne! 🇺🇸English review: King’s Cage completely took me by surprise – in the best possible way. What stood out most was Mare’s growth. For the first time, we truly get to experience her development – not just in her powers, but emotionally, in her relationships, and in how she carries the weight of everything she’s been through. It felt much deeper and more real than before. And that ending? I did not see it coming. Shocking, emotional, and exactly the kind of cliffhanger that makes you immediately reach for the next book. King’s Cage was a clear highlight of the series for me – absolutely a 5-star read!

3.5/5 Again a 3.5 for this series. Like the previous books, I like the fighting scenes and i like the endings that ususlly come with a good twist and finally someone (Cameron) voiced my thoughts on book two Mare. We also get a look at how Maven is ticking and working as a king (my dude needs therapy). This time the book uses split POV, yet the POVs are 85% Mare and the other POVs only serve to descibe plot points. The rhythm of the POVs and the story is not quiet right. The setup for the final books is interesting, lets hope it deliveres.

Endlich geht es voran! Nach dem zweiten Band hatte ich schon Angst, dass die Geschichte ihren Schwung verloren hätte. Aber spätestens nach der ersten Hälfte dieses Buchs hat die Geschichte endlich ihre Spannung wiedergefunden. Das Ende hat noch mal vieles aufgewühlt und ich bin schon gespannt, wie sich die Geschichte im letzten Buch entwickelt.

Der dritte Teil der Red Queen Reihe war auch wieder ein gutes Buch, hat mir aber nicht so sehr zugesagt, wie die beiden Teile davor. Mare war viel in Gefangenschaft und dadurch hat sich für mich das Buch die ersten Seiten sehr gezogen. Zum Ende hin wurde es dann wieder besser und es kam mehr Action. Das Ende generell hat mich wenig überrascht, da es irgendwie schon vorauszusehen war. Die Beziehung zwischen Cal und Mare fühle ich tatsächlich nicht so sehr, irgendwie fehlt mir da häufig die Chemie, wobei die Beziehung ja generell eh zu kurz kam durch die lange Gefangenschaft. Dagegen fand ich die etwas seltsamen Beitehungsstränge zwischen Maven und Mare wieder interessanter. Maven ist generell für mich ein interessanter Charakter, weil ich ihn nicht so richtig einschätzen kann. Er ist irgendwie böse aber gleichzeitig einfach nur gebrochen. Ich bin gespannt, wie es mit ihm weitergeht und welche Rolle er noch einnehmen wird außer als der Feind. Aber irgendwie hassen kann ich ihn nicht. Vielleicht auch, weil ich ihn im ersten Buch so gerne mochte.😂 Ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt, wie sich die ganze Geschichte im letzten Buch entwickelt. Durch die vielen neu dazu gekommenen Charaktere und manche Wendungen im Handeln einiger Charaktere, steht der Geschichte vieles offen.😊

What a brilliant end to an explosive series. I loved this series and all the characters that were here. Ive got to admit, I actually quite liked Evangeline from the beginning and it was nice to see her develop aas a character. Brilliant end to a great series. I liked the fact it was left open for another one and not quite finished and done, if the author decided. Well worth the read.

Gerade so drei aber nur weil das Ende gut war. Aber alles davor war einfach krass langweilig und hat sich mega gezogen

I kind of enjoyed reading King's Cage more than it's predecessors but still it's Aveyards classic storytelling and writing. I'm not the biggest fan of this series and I'll never be but now I'm way too immersed in the story to stop it now. (I thought this book was the last one to be honest) Well, well. Let's see what she does with it in book 4.

Es war so gut. Es war einfach so gut. Das Ende. So anders, so herzzerreißend gut. Ah. Ich liebe alles daran. Ein paar Gedanken am Rande: Evangeline ist mir weiterhin nicht sympathisch. Sie will einfach Prinzessin oder Königin sein, um Macht zu haben. Nicht weil sie ihr Königreich liebt oder sonst irgendetwas empfindet. Sie sieht den Unterschied zwischen Rot und Silber, aber es ist ihr einfach egal. Egal welche eigenen Konflikte sie hat, sie würde es in einer Rebellion verdienen, danach hingerichtet zu werden. Meine Meinung. „We keep our crowns. It’s only been a few weeks, but I’m loath to give away what we’ve planned for. What I deserve.“ Wie kommt Evangeline darauf, dass sie eine Krone verdient? Wofür? Weil ihre Vorfahren mal Eroberer waren? Weil ihre Eltern ihr das eingetrichtert haben? Dann sind ihre Eltern ebenso desillusioniert wie sie. Das werfen die Lords der anderen Häuser Volo Samos auch vor und es stimmt ja: Samos hat keine Liebe für das Land, es geht ihm allein um Macht. Er hat von meiner Beobachtung aus gar kein Interesse für die rote Bevölkerung. Er soll sie ja nicht gleichsehen mit den Silbernen, aber als König muss er sie trotzdem als sein Volk sehen. Da glaube ich sogar, dass Maven mehr Interesse an seinem Gefolge hat. Die Häuser sind alle so getrieben von Machtgier, dass sie den wahren Feind, Monfort und die Scarlet Guard, so hart unterschätzen. Ich freue mich schon so darauf, wie sie im nächsten Buch auf die Fresse fallen. Denn in Davidson I trust. Und Cal … ich hoffe dass er hart angekrochen kommt. Denn alles andere würde ich nicht akzeptieren. Mare fasst ihn so gut zusammen: „The prince is as he has always been. A good person at his core, but unwilling to act.“ „Mine chose to walk away. Chose everything I hate over everything I am. “

All in all I liked the development of the story. Mares imprisonment did stretch out a bit too much for my liking, but there were a lot of interesting twists and turns. I was glad not every battle scene was drawn out to its fullest, instead cutting to the next picture. I really like Mares character development, the captivity changed her and she manages to make the most of it, righting past wrongs. Where I was previously unsure about her, I really appreciate her now.

This book was better than the precious books but it could have been cut by >300 pages.

can i just say that this book fucks up my feelings between heroes and villains in so many different ways? because yes it did. safe to say that i'm liking it way more than i did glass sword. however... first half of the book was so ... i have no words. i was plain bored. felt like prolonging nothingness. it did bring some important key points but it felt really boring and there wasn't really much going on either, tbh could've been shortened to just a couple of pages. but then the book picked up it's pace and things got super exciting. i knew it. i knew i was falling more in love with maven in this book. this book has me questioning not only where cal's loyalties lie but also mines. maven has the most amazing backstory ever. i mean, him having holes in his memories because of elara, his love for his brother taken away because of elara and most of all never being able to know if anything was actually emotionally real for him at all again because of fucking ELARA?! you can definitely understand why this man has issues. my man's just trying to do what he can with all of the trust issues he's had since he was very little. all of the maven and mare scenes was just so on point. i loved seeing them interact and i feel so heartbroken that this is how it's going to be. we won't be seeing the silver king and the red queen that he meant. my heart aches for maven, i swear to god. i loved their scenes way more than i did cal's and mare's. although some of the cal and mare scenes were really greatly written and about damn time. i am actually starting to get on board this cal and mare relationship. but of course we end on the same ridiculous problem of cal's inability to choose sides. i swear their drama is never resolved, it's basically been the same problem since book one. i guess that's one of the reasons why it's been hard for me to get on board. dear lord please let the ending of the series be satisfying.

The story starts right where glass sword ended and it was awesome! Even though Mare was in captivity for most of the time it wasn't boring at all. The secrets she learned during that time are going to be crucial for the ongoing story. The different POVs are really nice, because as a reader you can follow Mare during her captivity but also Cameron and the Scarlet Guard. The POV of Evangeline was unexpected but gives her character more depth and makes herself more likeable (never thought I am gonna say this). I also really loved the relationship between Cal and Mare and how it developed over the time. The end was (as usual with Victoria Aveyards stories) an unseen plottwist and I cannot wait to read the next book ASAP!
