Description

A. L. Graziadei's Icebreaker is an irresistible YA debut about two hockey players fighting to be the best-and the romance that catches them by surprise along the way.

Seventeen-year-old Mickey James III is a college freshman, a brother to five sisters, and a hockey legacy. With a father and a grandfather who have gone down in NHL history, Mickey is almost guaranteed the league's top draft spot.

The only person standing in his way is Jaysen Caulfield, a contender for the #1 spot and Mickey's infuriating (and infuriatingly attractive) teammate. When rivalry turns to something more, Mickey will have to decide what he really wants, and what he's willing to risk for it.

This is a story about falling in love, finding your team (on and off the ice), and choosing your own path.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Von mir gibt's eine Leseempfehlung fรผr alle Fans von Sport-Romanzen. ๐Ÿ˜Š Short english review below โฌ‡๏ธ ๐”ผ๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•– ๐•ƒ๐•š๐•”๐•–๐•ช โ˜˜๏ธ โžก๏ธ Wow! Cute

A cute queer ya novel with great character development. I can absolutely recommend it one of the best debuts I've had so far.

The story ends very abruptly. I was just getting reaaaly into it and then there was the epilogue. A bit dissapointed to be honest. But overall it was a quick nice read.

CW: Depressionen

4 stars not only is this a super cute enemies-to-lovers-story with a bi MC, it also talkes about many very important topics like mental health and homophobia in sports. And it includes my favorite band, The Amity Affliction! Loved it!

Take my undying love for Check, Please! and tell me there's a university hockey team coming-of-age book out there that uses the rivals to lovers trope --> I was tripping over myself to add this to my tbr. As per usual, I wasn't ready for the emotional sucker punch :D Overall, I would've loved to spend more time with these characters and their growth than I could and I would've been deeply grateful to stick around for a few more of those long overdue, beginning-to-heal conversations, because that shit was cathartic as heck. Be that as it may, this was knocking-me-on-my-ass, crying-for-2-hours-straight levels impactful when it comes to representation. It has feeling estranged from your family, mostly your parents; having been self-reliant and career oriented for so much of your life that letting in a found family/becoming part of a team is a struggle; ever-present spirals of depression, self-doubt, self-criticism, pressure, abandonment issues, unhealthy coping mechanisms, dissociation. It truly was rough to read, but to me it also rang so true. Other characters I would've loved to get to know better, they made a stellar, delightfully queer ensemble!, but the introspection on our bisexual, mentally ill MC was truly wonderful. It felt authentic and realistically messy & non-linear. Would recommend this for people who want to be seen in feeling bone-deep loneliness and be comforted by the MC arriving at a better headspace. Also hopeful representation for feeling pressured to figure your life path out so soon and under much external scrutiny. Liked this as a coming-of-age that does offer teaching moments, but never without giving room and acknowledgement that it's ok not to be okay sometimes. CWs: depression, descriptions of depressive episodes, medication, alcohol as coping mechanism, estranged parents, reconnecting with family, mounds and mounds of professional expectations and pressure, discussion of homophobia in professional sports. A loving CW for team shenanigans and meddling

I started this book and ended up reading it nearly in one go because I just couldn't stop, no matter how long my to-do list was. This book feels like All for the Game meets Red, White and Royal Blue minus the mafia and the international politics. Like, I used to say I'm not into sports stories but I am starting to change my mind on that. Even though my knowledge on ice hockey is vague, but it's not as if you need to have a lot. Because the focus lies on the characters and especially the main character Mickey who is strrugling with depression and anxiety, the legacy of being the son and grand-son of hockey stars, and now his biggest rival Jaysen Caulfield too. I'm not a huge romance lover but I adored the scences beteen them, the tension, the yearning, everything, and I liked how Mickey was completely aware of his crush from the beginning, because usually, this isn't the case. (Which is fun too. But I liked to have another approach this time.) I liked how the conflicts were realistic and not some unnecessary drama that is more annoying than everything else, and I was completely content to just read about the interactions between the characters. The time skips sometimes felt a bit sudden but contrary to some other readers, I really liked the end even though I was sad that it was over. ^^ I also loved the diversity with Mickey being bi and Jaysen being Black and one of Mickey's sisters being lesbian and another having a polyam relationship. The book addresses homophobia and racism especially in the ice hockey realm but it also offers a lot of representation. Tbh, most of the side characters still feel a bit hard to grasp, even though I also had the impression that they are still complex personalities - but this is typical for romance stories and I nevertheless liked the interaction with his sisters or other people in the team and that people actually communicate in this story.

Such an underrated, cute and wholesome stand-alone story. Definitely surprised me! If you love two guys falling in love while playing in different teams; definitely check this out. Although the enemies to lovers aspect wasn't that big of an impact for this one!

So... this was an enjoyable read, but it really is chick lit genderswapped, not the romance I was hoping for.
