Ein fucking Meisterwerk!
Also das war nach langer Zeit mal wieder ein richtiges Hardcore-Urban-Fantasy-Epos das seinesgleichen sucht. Geschmäcker sind verschieden, aber ich fand es einfach verdammt gut. Es wird "gesprochen wie die Schnauze wächst", es gibt richtig coole Action Szenen und auch einen gewissen Humor der einen mal zwischendrin grinsen lässt. Eine vielfältige Welt mit massenweise magischen Kreaturen, Titanen, Gottheiten, Feen und Elfen... Eine richtig bunte Mischung einfach! Arlo als Halbelfe, Vehan als Prinz und sein Hofmeister Aurelian und dann noch Nausicaä als ehemalige Furie. Ein Team das erst mal absurd erscheint, aber gemeinsam das Ziel verfolgt denjenigen zu finden der massenhaft Menschen entführt und Halbelfen tötet und dann auch noch versucht Steine der Weisen zu erschaffen. Die Perspektiven wechseln, wir dürfen jeden mal begleiten und in dessen Kopf eintauschen und so bleibt das ganze richtig schön vielseitig und wird nicht wirklich langweilig. Ich musste mich ein bisschen an Pronomen wie Xier oder die gewöhnen... Das ist einfach extrem neu und klingt halt irgendwie "fremd" und geht einem deshalb erst mal nicht so leicht "von der Zunge", aber mit der Zeit wurde es besser. Ich bin wirklich gespannt auf den nächsten Teil und werde die Reihe weiter verfolgen! 😊
I bought the beautiful Illumicrate Edition (February Box) of this book. This book was not what I expected, in the middle I was thinking about quitting. Having 5 POV, a slow pace of story building and endless paragraphs of info dumping made it hard to follow and even harder to stay focused on what was happening. I found myself skipping paragraphs trying to find interesting conversations or parts where something interesting happened. It was foreseeable who was the bad guy from almost the beginning. The story picked up in the last 200 pages and finally some action happened. Nevertheless I’m going to read the second book as the first had a plot twist at the end I did not see coming. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Stars
Ich ärgere mich, dass ich die ersten Kapitel dieses Buches nicht etwas aufmerksamer gelesen habe. So sind mir ein paar Erläuterungen zu den Furien, Göttlichkeiten, Sterblichen, Unsterblichen und sonstigen Geschöpfen, genauso wie die Zusammenhängen zwischen den Herrschern, bestimmt ein wenig entgangen bzw. nicht ganz so in Erinnerung geblieben, wie ich es im Laufe des Buches gebraucht hätte. Trotzdem hatte ich meinen Spaß, denn manches wird durchaus ein wenig wiederholt. Wobei ich gleich vorab sagen muss: Man darf hier manches nicht ganz so ernst und genau nehmen, denn es gibt einen bunten Mix zwischen den Mythologien und sonstigen Fantastereien. Was den Spaßfaktor für mich noch erhöhte, waren immer wieder eingeworfene geekige Kommentare. Ja, das hat mich durchaus amüsiert. Das Cover hatte mich schon begeistert und ich hoffte sehr, dass mir auch das Buch gefallen würde. Und wenn schon dabei steht "Nothing ist more dangerous than a faerie tale", ging ich davon aus, dass hier keine Wattebäuschchen herumgeworfen werden - und das ist definitiv nicht der Fall. Auf das queere Thema, mit welchem das Buch häufig beworben und empfohlen wird, gehe ich nicht ein, denn das ist für mich kein Thema und trägt auch nicht dazu bei, ob ein Buch gut oder schlecht ist. Ein respektvolles Miteinander und Offenheit sollte selbstverständlich sein. Ich mochte den Schreibstil, die Protagonisten, das Geplänkel zwischen ihnen und auch das Düstere, was sich aufgrund der Mordserie durch das Buch zog. Es gab viele Geheimnisse, die mit der Zeit ein wenig gelüftet wurden. Einige sind im Dunklen verblieben. Obwohl ich manche Handlungen teilweise erahnen konnte, gab es genügend Wendungen, sodass immer ein gewisses Maß an Spannung vorhanden war. Langweile kam nicht auf, denn es wurde häufig zwischen den Erlebnissen der verschiedenen Charaktere gewechselt. Was viele AutorInnen vergessen bzw. nicht berücksichtigen, sind die Ereignisse um die Antagonisten. Hier ist dies nicht der Fall, denn etliche Abschnitte sind diesen gewidmet. Alles in allem wurde ich von dem Buch nicht enttäuscht. Es hat mich sehr gut unterhalten und ich freue mich schon auf die Fortsetzung.
Listen, I'm a raging leftist who bothers everyone around her with her politics and opinions but some of this stuff in here was so on the nose, it felt like a parody. I share the criticism of others that this book is seriously white and it saddens me. A queer person of color isn't a novelty also isn't difficult to write. What this book also didn't manage to do, at least in the first half, was keep tension. It answered questions I didn't even know I had and paused in the middle of scenes to explain something to me for more than one sentence. This just isn't how it should work. At all. Keep me guessing, answer things later. It's fantasy, I'm expecting to be confused in the beginning. It's fine! Explain it later! Nausicäa also continuously reminded me of Aphrodite from House of Night with her dialogue and I don't mean this as a compliment. The characters won me over though, so I'm curious about book 2. If only the book cover wasn't so butt ugly.
Holy shit! It took me some time to get into this. Not necessarily because of how this book was written. More for personal reasons. But once it happened, it got me hooked! The characters are amazing! I love Alecto the most. She is very complex and such a rush. Arlo is very sweet. The prince and his protector are super interesting. This story had many turns and is nothing for the faint hearted. The epilogue had me surprised in a way I did not expect at all. I loved it. And I’m super worried for the four.
First and foremost: GO READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW!!!! It’s like Cruel Prince and City of Bones had a baby and that baby stole my heart! Can't say why this didn't quite catch me. I enjoyed the plot, and the different characters were interesting. Will definitely read book two sometime in the future. It's just... The something that usually gets me to hyperfocus on books wasn't quite present here. Although that isn't necessarily bad, I didn't miss any bus stops because of this.
Maybe the problem was that she was once again letting herself get so keyed up by all the things she wasn't that she couldn't see the things she already was - resourceful and brave and, perhaps most importantly, not in this alone. 2.5 stars This book deserves a shout out for its diverstity alone. So everyone that would love a fae story with a lot of queer, this might be the book for you. But if you need to watch out for trigger/content warnings: This book has a pretty long list, so you might wanna look into that. For me, this book was a roller coaster. It started off really amazing, I liked Alecto at once and the setting and everything in the prologue was perfection. Well, the setting didn't last long, Shuttleworth puts all the magical creatures she writes about in a modern US/Canadian environment. Mixing magic with technology and modern times is difficult (not in general but for me personally!). There were pages (yes, after the prologue as well) that I devoured and could not put this book down. And then were pages that I just couldn't get through, they would take forever to read. I don't know what it was. Maybe part of it were the changes in pov. Nausicaä and Arlo were great almost through every of their chapters. Aurelian was interesting and pretty cool, too. The Seelie prince (I always forget his name...) was the opposite. I didn't really like him or care for him. But handsdown my favorite characters was Celadon. I just love him. The story started like a crime novel and it's all about figuring out who murdered all those people (not my cup of tea, either, I'm afraid). I was more interested in the courts and all which really fascinated me and I'm here for more so if the sequel comes, I'll be reading it.
