Anne's House of Dreams

Ich bin echt enttäuscht. Das Buch fängt an wie ein schöner Neuanfang für Anne und Gilbert, aber irgendwie wird es schnell schwer und traurig. Anne verliert total ihren Charakter. Sie ist nicht mehr die starke, träumerische Anne von früher, sondern wirkt wie eine Nebenfigur in ihrem eigenen Leben. Statt ihrer Geschichte geht es plötzlich um nervige Nachbarinnen, tragische Nebenfiguren und den Verlust ihres Kindes. Trotzdem wird alles so distanziert erzählt, dass man kaum Mitgefühl aufbauen kann. Und Gilbert? Absolut farblos. Die Beziehung zwischen den beiden fühlt sich kalt und oberflächlich an. Die Sprache ist zwar stellenweise noch schön, aber die Magie der ersten Bände ist einfach verschwunden. Es fühlt sich nicht mehr nach Anne an. Eher wie eine Geschichte, die versucht, sie in ein altes Frauenbild zu pressen. Und das tut beim Lesen wirklich weh.

The ableism against Dick Moore is really shocking. Calling him a big baby, always mentioning "how terrible it is for Leslie that she has to nurse this big useless baby" and all this is really problematic, but for the book was published in 1922 I thought "well, that's how it was back then" and was willing to give 3 stars. But after the chapter "Gilbert and Anne disagree" I was mad, I tell you that!! But again, I know that's how it was back then, still that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it.Also, <spoiler> it was so confusing that Anne was pregnant and we only know that because of three vague sentences and then she gets the baby, it dies and Anne griefs only two pages long before it is rarely mentioned again </spoiler>
