WHITE CAT: Volume 1 (The Curse Workers)

Okay, das war wirklich mal etwas Neues. Da die Reihe schon etwas älter ist, habe ich befürchtet, sie wäre eventuell schlecht gealtert. Das habe ich beim Lesen allerdings keineswegs so empfunden. Ich fand das Magiesystem echt spannend und die Mischung mit diesen Mafia-ähnlichen Strukturen hat dem Ganzen einen herrlich moralisch grauen Anstrich verpasst. Mit Cassel bin ich allerdings nicht so ganz warm geworden. Irgendwie wirkte er so emotionslos. Stellenweise hätte ich wirklich mehr innerliche Reaktionen von ihm erwartet, denn er durchlebt und erfährt einige ziemlich krasse Sachen. Das betrifft allerdings nicht nur ihn, allgemein reagieren die Charaktere recht flach. Dadurch habe auch ich beim Lesen keine stärkeren Gefühle durchlebt, so ein richtiges Mitfühlen war einfach nicht möglich. Und dass obwohl es einige Enthüllungen & Plottwists gibt, die durchaus heftige Emotionen hergegeben hätten. Stellenweise wird es etwas abgedreht und wild, aber das bin ich von Holly Black gewohnt. :D Es hat mich insgesamt jedenfalls genug überzeugt, um die Reihe weiterlesen zu wollen. Definitiv für Fans von Dark Fantasy, Suspense, morally grey Characters und Bücher über Mafia-ähnliche Clans geeignet.

ABSOLUTELY FREAKING BRILLIANT. i‘ve now read this for the third (or fourth?) time and it just doesn‘t get boring. cassel as the narrator doesn‘t get boring, the world-building doesn‘t get boring, the plot is simply genius. if you like six of crows, or heist books, or a cool urban fantasy, or just entertaining, fun books, please give this one a try! i love cassel as the main character so so so much! experiencing the story through is eyes, with his voice, makes it 100 times better. he has great humor, and is deeply flawed, and i find it amazing being inside the brain of a brilliant con artist who just wants to be liked. then, holly black has outdone herself with the world-building. she writes a modern setting but with a twist: there‘s magic in our world and everybody knows that. the magic changes a lot, and i especially love how that becomes apparent through smaller details. since workers use their hands, everyone always wears gloves, which makes seeing bare hands shocking. at one point cassel describes the typical-to-him-song of someone being cursed into loving someone. finding my way into this world of curses and criminal activity happened so seamlessly, and it‘s just convincing to the point that it feels real. last point; the plot. THE PLOT. it‘s so good. i love cool heist moves and this book has some of the best. even though i remembered most secrets, plans, and their outcomes, it‘s still so fun to read about the craziness in this book. on to book 2 now!

Ich hatte richtig Bock auf eine magische Geschichte aber hiermit kann ich mich nur widerwillig zufrieden geben. Ich habe einige sehr gute Rezensionen zu dem Buch gesehen. Ich frag mich, ob wir dieselbe Geschichte gelesen haben. 😅 Der Anfang war für mich zu plötzlich. Kaum etwas wurde erklärt. Ich musste mich sogar vergewissern, dass ich nicht versehentlich den zweiten Band in der Hand halte. Danach war die Geschichte lahm bis circa zur Hälfte. Dann kam Fahrt auf. Dinge wurden erklärt und Geheimnisse gelüftet. Trotzdem bleibt das Buch für mich Mittelmaß. Empfehlen würde ich es nicht.
