Description
Tigana is the magical story of a beleaguered land struggling to be free. It is the tale of a people so cursed by the black sorcery of a cruel despotic king that even the name of their once-beautiful homeland cannot be spoken or remembered...
But years after the devastation, a handful of courageous men and women embark upon a dangerous crusade to overthrow their conquerors and bring back to the dark world the brilliance of a long-lost name...Tigana.
Against the magnificently rendered background of a world both sensuous and barbaric, this sweeping epic of a passionate people pursuing their dream is breathtaking in its vision, changing forever the boundaries of fantasy fiction.

4.5* Guy Gavriel Kay writes amazing fantasy! The worlds he creates, with his amazing prose, are so rich and still familiar, because he bases a lot of his world building on actual history. Here the basis was Italy and it's conflicts between the city-states. The themes he explores are thought provoking and wonderfully woven into the story. The characters are mostly interesting, even though I thought some parts of their back story were rather boring. But like George RR Martin, Daniel Abraham, Brandon Sanderson to some extend and a few others, GGK manages it to let his characters appear more believable. Nobody is just pure evil or pure good, it matters on the perspective. The villain in the beginning may seem like a villain, until you get to see his point of view or the people around him and you notice your "heroes" got their dark sides as well. I absolutely love this gray character setup, it makes it much more complex and closer to reality. Not as good as [b:The Lions of al-Rassan|104101|The Lions of al-Rassan|Guy Gavriel Kay|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348007861s/104101.jpg|955081] but still amazing and a must read! GGK is now definitely one of my favorite authors, ordered two more books of him already!
3,5 Stars: Great world and writing with issues
Just finished Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. I’m torn to what to rate it honestly. The magic, the writing itself and the worldbuilding were great and I enjoyed them very much. However. The pacing especially with overly long flashbacks (with little relevance to current events), the portrayal of woman and the seemingly random romances between characters did annoy me while reading. Overall the ending was satisfying and I would give the book 3,5 Stars. You will definitely feel that the book was written in a different time. And even if there were some aspects in it that were quite interesting, I don’t think it’s a must read in fantasy.
