Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) was born in Florence, and served the Florentine republic as a secretary and second chancellor, as ambassador and foreign policy-maker. When the Medici family returned to power in 1512 he was suspected of conspiracy, imprisoned and tortured and forced to retire from public life. His most famous work, The Prince, was written in an attempt to gain favour with the Medicis and return to politics.

In diesem Buch geht Niccolo Machiavelli auf die verschiedenen Bestandteile einer erfolgreichen Politik ein. Dieses Buch war eigentlich als Bewerbung anzusehen um in Dienste in die Medici zu kommen. Seine Vorgeschichte wird hier auch im Vorfeld behandelt aber das eigentliche Werk geht um allgemeine Argumente und auch Untermauerung von Beispielen innerhalb der Jahrhunderte. Es gefällt mir auf jeden Fall sehr gut da alles so auf den Punkt gebracht ist und gerade durch reelle Beispiele zeig dass es keine blanke Theorie ist. Man muss aber dazu sagen dass man schon ein gewisses historisches Grundwissen sich vorher aneignen muss oder noch mal, wenn man daran Interesse hat, nach Recherche betreiben sollte um genau zu verstehen wer diese ganzen Leute die erwähnt werden sind. Es wird hier an so viel gedacht, wie z.B das zu einem Herrscher auch eine stabile Armee gehört oder auch natürlich dass man die Probleme nicht vermeiden sollte denn diese führen oftmals vielleicht zu einem Krieg sondern dass man diese vorher angeht um einen Krieg beispielsweise zu verhindern. Es gibt auf jeden Fall einem einen guten Einblick in unterschiedliche Arten von Monarchien und auch noch deren Unterscheidung und Abwägungen. Es ist auf jeden Fall ein sehr komplexes Thema und dieses Buch hat mich durchaus überrascht.
“There is no other way to guard yourself against flattery than by making men understand that telling you the truth will not offend you.” Loved this book, it was more of a guide how to be a proper prince... but so many little insights throughout the history (loved his explanations on the different empires, especially the Turkish Empire)
