Das gelbe Haus ist ein sehr starkes und fantastisches Buch. Mit jedem Kapitel hofft man, dass Hana es schafft, auch wenn man als erfahrener Kawakami-Leser weiß, dass das fast unmöglich ist. In diesem Buch begleiten wir drei Mädchen aus unterschiedlichen Verhältnissen, wobei Hana klar im Mittelpunkt steht. Sie alle teilen jedoch den Wunsch nach Freiheit und finanzieller Unabhängigkeit, und ihre Geschichte ist geprägt von Träumen, Trauma und Armut. Hana wächst in prekären Verhältnissen am Rand der Gesellschaft auf, bis sie ihre Mutter verlässt und Kimiko, einer Freundin ihrer Mutter, folgt. Dort lernt Hana zwei weitere junge Frauen kennen, die ebenfalls in Kimikos Snack-Bar arbeiten. Doch die Tragödie verfolgt Hana und nichts bleibt lange ruhig und gut.
