I had a hard time with the beginning of the story because I didn't think Ellery was a particularly good main character (at the beginning). I don't exactly know why, maybe it was because of the author's writing style. That's why I had little motivation to continue reading. After a while, when the story started to get more interesting, I also found Ellery way better and i really liked how her relationship to Knox was slowly developing. But it still took me a long time to finish the book. (Charlie and Zada were my favorite characters. They both were great and funny.)

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌶️ „Otherworldly“ war einfach zu cute! Ellery, Knox, Charley und Zada waren super coole Charaktere und die Story hat unfassbar Spaß gemacht. Die Charaktere sind alle relativ jung und so liest sich auch das Buch, aber es gab kein großes Teenie-Drama. Der Fantasy-Teil war richtig interessant, auch wenn es insgesamt keine neue Welt war und das meiste aus bekannter Folklore aus allen möglichen Kulturen stammt. Knox und Ellerys Love Story war super cute und ich will auf jeden Fall noch andere Bücher der Autorin lesen.

Ich habe bereits sehr gute Erfahrungen mit In Deeper Waters und So this is Ever After gemacht, und auch dieses Mal hat mich F.T. Lukens nicht enttäuscht, Schreibstil und Themen/Plot passt da für mich einfach immer wieder. Es handelt sich um einen Urban Fantasy Romance Mix. Das Setting ist eine moderne Welt, in der supernatural creatures grundsätzlich bekannt sind, der Glaube an diese aber teilweise verschwindet. So geht es Ellery, welche*r aufgrund eines unerklärlichen 5 Jahre anhaltenden Winters in der Region um die Stadt herum, bei dem keine Gebete oder Opfergaben an die zuständige Göttin etwas gebracht haben, dessen Glauben an das Übernatürliche verloren hat. Als Knox, ein Familiar, der von sogenannten Shades verfolgt wird und Hilfe braucht, in deren Leben stolpert, wird dessen Weltansicht daher ganz schön auf den Kopf gestellt. Doch seinem Schicksal überlassen wollen Ellery, dessen Cousine Charley und ihre feste Freundin Zada Knox nicht und beschließen, ihm zu helfen, wobei gerade Ellery auch hofft, dass Knox ihnen dabei helfen kann, herauszufinden, was es mit dem ewigen Winter auf sich hat. F.T. Lukens schafft es immer wieder, trotz der Kürze der Einzelbände eine tolle Mischung aus Spannung und Wohlfühl-Szenen hinzubekommen mit (vor allem für einen Einzelband) gutem Worldbuilding, ein paar vereinzelte Mythologie Anspielungen und Charakteren, die einem einfach ans Herz wachsen. Die casual queer representation ist dabei immer ein zusätzlicher Pluspunkt. Ich liebe einfach alle, Ellery, Knox, Charley, Zada, aber auch Nebencharaktere wie Lorelei und Bram. Sie alle haben eine eigene, liebenswürdige und teilweise sehr relatable Persönlichkeit (und Ellery hat teilweise so Percy Jackson audacity Momente, die ich einfach gefeiert hab), tolle Beziehungen zueinander und ich bin jetzt schon traurig, dass ich nicht mehr von ihnen zu lesen habe. Ich kann das Buch wirklich nur jedem empfehlen, der die Mischung aus (Urban) Fantasy und queerer Romance (wenn auch Fast Burn, da Einzelband) mag, insbesondere, wenn man mal was kürzeres für Zwischendurch sucht.
Another cute YA Fantasy/Love story from F.T. Lukens. The plot in this one is a bit deeper than I expected, but it still keeps that lighthearted vibe that [book:So This Is Ever After|55545191] also had, even when dealing with slightly darker topics. I think I liked this a bit more than [book:So This Is Ever After|55545191] and I think the story felt a bit more grounded (but that might just be because this one is urban fantasy, while [book:So This Is Ever After|55545191] is high fantasy), but overall another light-hearted (but not trivially so) Fantasy love story in the way we know and love, but without being repetitive. I really liked the worldbuilding with the gods and godesses and spirits, etc. and how they interacted with each other and the world, it gave us a great cast. I can recommend, and I will make my way through the rest of F.T. Lukens catalogue.

Als ich Otherworldly im Laden stehen sah, musste ich es sofort kaufen, schließlich habe ich im vergangenen Jahr mit großer Freude zwei andere F.T. Lukens Bücher gelesen. Doch diesmal hat der Spagat zwischen Jugendromanze, Ernsthaftigkeit, Übernatürlichem und lockerem in den Tag hineinleben für mich schlicht nicht funktioniert. Am Anfang werden sehr hohe Erwartungen, inklusive einer großen Fallhöhe, aufgebaut, die leider bald in Vergessenheit geraten. Stattdessen besteht die Handlung über lange Zeit daraus, jeden Tag etwas in der Umgebung zu erleben und dabei "zufälligerweise" übernatürliche Wesen zu treffen. Zufälligerweise ist hier in Anführungszeichen, denn dass wirklich überall, wo die Charaktere hingehen, eine andere Entität lauert, wirkt leider extrem konstruiert und resultiert in einer Ziellosigkeit, die sich auch in den Figuren spiegelt. Schade ist ebenfalls, dass gerade Ellery als non-binäre Figur, auf die ich mich sehr gefreut habe, die ganze Zeit blass bleibt. Hier fehlen die Ecken und Kanten, Erlebnisse und Interessen, die wirklich lebendig machen. Ellery wird mir wahrscheinlich nicht lange im Gedächtnis bleiben, gerade im Vergleich zu den anderen schillernden Gestalten. Kurz vor dem Ende war dann bei mir völlig die Luft raus, sodass ich im Schneckentempo weitergelesen habe und ich wegen der Art, wie die Handlung ihre eigenen Regeln vergisst, fast noch einen halben Stern abgezogen hätte. Das Finale war jedoch düster und anders genug, um die 3 von 5 Sternen zu belassen. Ich bleibe etwas enttäuscht zurück. Hätte so gerne mehr darüber erfahren, wie die eigentlich interessante Welt funktioniert, was die Geschichte der übernatürlichen Wesen ist, wie das Leben sich durch den ewigen Winter wirklich verändert hat (also auch wie die steigende Anzahl an gefährlichen Entitäten Auswirkungen hat) etc. Stattdessen habe ich vieles als zu simpel, zu harmlos - einfach zu egal empfunden. Selbst die Romantik hat durch die träge Handlung, Schwierigkeiten sich zu entfalten. Vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass die zwei Tuteltäubchen sich gerade einmal ein paar Wochen kennen. (Sind wir denn hier bei Twilight?) Natürlich bleibt es dennoch eine nette, schnell gelesene Unterhaltung, die nicht zum Kopfschütteln reizt und ohne hohe Erwartungen Spaß machen kann.

I really enjoyed reading the story of Knox and Ellery, just like I have loved all the other books from the author F.T. Lukens. I really hope there will be another book in this collection.

I'm in shambles... I don't wanna part with them 🥺 Siiigghh Well, let's be professional I guess. Loved it. Duh. To be specific tho: Knox and Ellery are amazing unexpected protagonists. They're... Real? And relatable and lovely and feisty and ugh.. Can't take it. The 'side' characters tho.?! Hello?! I'm in love with zada and Charley, Lorelei, even Bram etc I'm so glad they all didn't just appear here and there to be useful for the plot or whatever but actually felt like real, unique and important people! Soooo enjoyable! The whole story was.. Insane... Very well fleshed out world building, and... other... World... Building lmao... And pacing and chapters etc were perfect! I could see everything play out vividly in my mind, please I would die for this to be made a movie. Where do I bargain eh?? Seriously only demand I have is MORE I need more of them, more of F. T. Lukens, because they're so talented and you can just feel their heart and entire being in their works it's ugh, my life's energy is replenished after returning to one of their books ✨ favorite authors just hit. I'll go cry on my weighted blanket now okay have a nice day ❤️

I was little skeptical in the beginning but I ended up loving the two main characters (especially knox) I was worried about the little Orpheus reference but it actually turned out well done without undermining the original too much. Knox is a golden retriever in the body of a black cat tho
Magic and queer romance, good representation and a snowy setting. This was super cute but overall I felt underwhelmed. The plot was super simple and kind of boring, the ending resolved rather quickly, the fantasy elements very light and the romance underdeveloped. It wasn’t bad but I could have been so much better.
