Seventy-two-year-old August Brill is recovering from a car accident at his daughter's house in Vermont. When sleep refuses to come, he lies in bed and tells himself stories, struggling to push back thoughts about things he would prefer to forget: his wife's recent death and the horrific murder of his granddaughter's boyfriend, Titus. The retired book critic imagines a parallel world in which America is not at war with Iraq but with itself. In this other America the twin towers did not fall and the 2000 election results led to secession, as state after state pulled away from the union and a bloody civil war ensued.
As the night progresses, Brill's story grows increasingly intense, and what he is desperately trying to avoid insists on being told.

Die Durschnittsbewertung liegt bei 3,5 Sternen und längere Zeit dachte ich, dass meine Bewertung mindestens einen Stern besser ausfallen würde. Der alte Mann, der schlaflos im Dunkel liegt, denkt sich eine sehr spannende Geschichte aus um sich die Zeit zu vertreiben - das ist der erste Teil des Buchs. Im zweiten Teil unterhält er sich mit seiner Enkelin über seine Vergangenheit. Beide Teile haben mir gut gefallen - der Zusammenhang ist aber eher lose und ich bin nicht sicher, ob man die Geschichte(n) nicht etwas besser hätte verbinden können. Der ersten Teil hätte gerne noch etwas ausgebaut - vielleicht sogar ein ganzes Buch sein können (Ähnliches gilt für den zweiten Teil). Egal - Ich habe das Buch sehr gerne gelesen - besonders, weil mir der Schreibstil/der Erzählton gefiel. Es ist mein erstes Buch von Paul Auster, aber mit Sicherheit nicht das letzte! 3,8 Sterne :)

Im Dunklen bleiben wir jedenfalls nicht.
