Vermont, 1950, Idlewild Hall is a place for problem girls. It's rumored to be haunted. Four girls whisper about their fears until one of them mysteriously goes missing. Vermont, 2014, try as she might, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop analyzing the events surrounding her older sister's death. Her body was found in an overgrown field near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. Even though her sister's boyfriend Tim was found not guilty, something does not seem right. When she learns that an anonymous benefactor is restoring Idlewild Hall, she decides to write a piece about the place. While work is being done, a surprising discovery related to her sister's death and past secrets come to light, along with a voice that won't be silenced.
