"Please call Dr. Hoder." Those were the last words of Sylvia Plath before she comitted suicide. There have been many suggestions to its meaning and whether or not it was a "cry for help". We may never know the answer to that and if one picks up a her diaries in hopes of finding it in there, you will end up being disappointed. Her sudden death somehow overshadows all of her work and she became most famous for being "that depressed woman". It doesn't do her justice. Her diary shows just how complex she was as a woman and as a writer. Her diary is a reflection on her work, and on her techniques. I really enjoyed being this close to the process of writing. And although some pages were depressing, it somehow gives hope that if you work hard enough, you can accomplish anything. She received so many rejections and still kept going. I admire her for that. It was also full of wittiness and humor: Her reflections on life and marriage are somehow still relevant today. It's intimate and genuine and that's what makes it so enjoyable. I will forever admire her work.
