Nach dem ersten Band dachte ich noch, ich hätte den Durchblick.
In Adulthood Rites hebelt Butler jede moralische Sicherheit aus und lässt einen emotional nirgendwo mehr landen. Es ist dieses typische Gefühl bei Butler, bei dem man fasziniert und angewidert zugleich ist, weil sie das Wesen der Menschen so gnadenlos seziert. Im Fokus steht Akin als der erste männliche Hybrid, der halb Mensch und halb Oankali ist. Durch seine Entführung und sein Aufwachsen bei den resistenten Menschen wird das Buch zu einer schmerzhaften Analyse von Zugehörigkeit und Entfremdung. Butler stellt dabei die Frage, die mich beim Lesen richtig fertiggemacht hat, ob man ein Volk überhaupt retten kann, das sich durch die eigene Aggression und die Sucht nach Hierarchien selbst vernichtet. Akin ist eine so tiefgründige und fast schon tragische Figur, weil er zwischen zwei Spezies steht und die einsamste Brücke der Welt bildet. Während der erste Teil eher das Fremde erkundet hat, geht es hier ans Eingemachte und an die Frage, was uns eigentlich menschlich macht oder ob unsere Freiheit nur eine Illusion ist, wenn uns die eigene Biologie im Weg steht. Ihr Schreibstil ist dabei so kühl und präzise, dass die ethischen Dilemmata wie Nadelstiche wirken. Es gibt keine einfache Moral, sondern nur dieses beklemmende Gefühl im Magen, wenn man merkt, wie sehr Vorurteile und Angst unser Handeln bestimmen. Es ist ein Buch, das einen mit einer tiefen Melancholie zurücklässt, weil es zeigt, dass Veränderung oft einen Preis fordert, den man eigentlich nicht zahlen will.
