Long ago, following a cataclysm called "The Rupture," the world was shattered into many floating celestial islands known as arks.Ophelia lives on Anima, an ark where objects have souls. Beneath her worn scarf and thick glasses, the young girl hides the ability to communicate with the souls of objects, and the power to travel through mirrors. Her peaceful existence on the Ark of Anima is disrupted when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, from the powerful Dragon clan. I had my eyes on this series for a couple of years now and I'm happy to find that the wait paid off! I definitely wouldn't have enjoy it as much if I read it earlier. It focuses so much more on the different politics and the world building is so mystical I love the main characters, especially Ophelia and how easily she accepts herself/who she is and stands up for what she believes in. She's such an realistic and smart character that can admit that she was fooled without dramatic reactions. There truly weren't any moments were I felt that I couldn't continue to read because of second embarrassment. I'm so intriguing to find out what's going to happen next!
Miserable
This book made me miserable reading it but I finally finished it after 1,5 months. EVERY character is a bad person. Even the main character who is mostly boring as fuck is a "not like other girls"-girl and thinks that women who are sleeping with the town fuckboy are "weak". There is some interesting world building in there but it's being buried in a "character driven story" where I hated every single character. I honestly doubt I will pick up the second book except maybe when I'm stuck in a reading slump and need to read something without pressure of having to actually like it which should tell you everything you need to know.
This book felt weirdly nostalgic, the writing reminded me of some middle-grade books I read in my childhood. I also listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator was brilliant so that bumped up my rating a bit. The protagonist was a little bland but the fact that she was so ordinary and sweet was rather endearing. And she did grow a spine throughout the course of the book. I really enjoyed her relationship with her future husband, as well as with his aunt. They're both really interesting characters, Thorn is still an enigma in some ways and I really like the slow-burn romance they've got going on. The politics were interesting and the magical abilities pretty original. All in all, a solid debut.
4,5 stars I honestly did not expect to like this book as much as I did. My niece has borrowed it from the library, and since she didn't like it she gave it to me to read, and I basically inhaled the whole book within a few days. The world is so different from anything I have ever read, and the characters are super interesting. I find that I typically love fantasy books which are set in a court, and where the main character is caught up in many court intrigues, and this book definitely delivers on that front. Also: I kind of got enemies to (potential) lovers vibes from our two main characters, which I always love to read about! This first book ended in kind of a cliffhanger, so I sure hope that I can read the next book in the series asap!
