Cornelia Funke is the most internationally acclaimed and best-known German children’s author. She lives in Los Angeles, California today, but her career as an author and illustrator began in Hamburg. After obtaining an MA in education followed by a degree in graphic design, she began working as a freelance illustrator of children’s books. She did not always enjoy the stories she was commissioned to illustrate and so decided to write her own.
