About the book

*This gorgeous edition comes with French flaps, deckled edges, and spot gloss*From the author of the Magnolia Parks universe and the Never series comes a fresh family drama with a heavy dose of romance and a twist of mystery."I can't remember the last time I couldn't get a handle on myself and my emotions, but the lid is slipping.Something about the slipping lid feels like it's Sam Penny's fault. Like he broke the seal and he's slowly opening me up."London-based Georgia Carter, professional lie detector and body-language savant, has long been estranged from her infuriating, close-minded, wealthy South Carolina family. After a falling-out years ago, the chasm runs deep between the black sheep--Georgia and her gay, alcoholic brother--and their parents and elder siblings. But when their father dies suddenly, Georgia returns to the States for the funeral...where she comes face-to-face with Sam Penny, her brother's AA sponsor.Amid the tensions, dramas and revelations of the family reunion, Georgia and Sam are instantly drawn to each other. However, Georgia's brother also harbors feelings for Sam, and the last thing Georgia wants to do is hurt the only family she's ever really had. When their father's will reveals a surprising bequest to a mysterious stranger, Georgia's ability to read people becomes crucial in unraveling her father's hidden past. The delicate balance within the family teeters, and secrets--both old and new--threaten to push them beyond the breaking point. There are only so many cracks a damaged family can take before it shatters.

    All-consuming and heartfelt

Estranged from her ultra-conservative family in South Carolina, Georgia Carter has been living in England for almost a decade, pursuing her career as a psychologist and body language reader. When her father suddenly dies of a heart attack, she’s forced to return to the States for the funeral. Old conflicts are reignited, and her father’s will stirs up chaos and unanswered questions. Georgia and her siblings begin their search for the truth. In the midst of the chaos, it’s Sam Penny who quietly stands by her. From their first encounter, Georgia and Sam are drawn to each other—but Sam is her alcoholic brother’s AA sponsor, and Georgia doesn’t want to strain their already fragile relationship… I’m a huge fan of the Magnolia Parks Universe, but ‘The Conditions of Will’ was different. More serious, more reflective, more multi-layered. This book resonated deeply with me. It’s so much more than just a love story and family drama/mystery. It’s about love, faith, grief, addiction, trauma, growing up and LGBTQ+ in the American South. Toxic relationships are certainly one of Jessa Hastings’ recurring themes, but this time the romance between the main characters was anything but toxic. It was the Carter family’s dynamics that were, at times, almost unbearable. I was sometimes horrified by how they treated one another. Jessa Hastings’ writing style is truly unique—you’ll either love it or hate it. I personally adore her metaphor-rich, overflowing sentences because they bring her narrating characters so vividly to life. Georgia felt incredibly human and real! I admired how bravely she navigated her complicated family situation. I would have run away more than once. Her ability to read people was also a fun addition to the plot. The deep connection I felt with Georgia cracked something open in me, mirroring feelings I hadn’t yet found words for. ‘The Conditions of Will’ is a book that will stay with me long after the last page. Not only because of its beautiful cover.
