3,75-4 ⭐ Liebe die Atmosphäre. Liebe die Charaktere und den super trockenen Humor. Nicht besonders stark im Plot aber das erwarte ich bei einem olivie Blake auch nicht mehr 😅 Leider sehr viele, sehr verwirrende Zeit Sprünge. Kein richtiger roter Faden was Handlung angeht. Wenn ihr darüber hinweg sehen könnt und bekannt mit Olivie Blakes Schreibstil seid, absolut empfehlenswert.
I am very confused but also very impressed
I don’t know if it was the multiple characters views or times and location or whatever but I was very confused while reading this and still so incredibly intrigued to see how it all turns out. It was my first Olivie Blake book and I find her writing style very poetic and unique. I don’t really know if I like it tho but I think I’ll read more from her
Imagine, you start your day with a regular exorcism of a ghost haunting his home and end your day with trying to free death and your friends from an immortal game and a hungry demon king ... A wonderful story of dealing with mortality and immortality, especially for the MMC. The characters all seem to be interwoven with each other in their own unique ways and trying to understand their reasons and actions. Would have loved to see more of the Vi (who I still picture as the black cat from Kiki's Delivery Service), but the characters were all interesting in their own way (go off Death, you sassy king). The Game seems confusing at first, but becomes clear as the story goes on and even yourself as the reader try to understand the meaning of mortality. The writing style (at least for me) is refreshing and easy to read.
This was a difficult one.
The book is written in a sarcastic, metaphorical and sometimes philosophical way. The vocabulary is elevated compared to other english books I've read. Therefore, I had to look up many words since I am not a native speaker (such as austerity, minutiae, benediction and assuage). I didn't like the first half due to subplots or change of perspectives in between the main plot. I couldn't comprehend what these small stories were for. Hence, the pace was rather slow up to 50% of the book. Because of the not straightforward writing style in these passages, I didn't understand what was happening half of the time. I had the feeling that important information was presented very subtle and indirect to the reader which was quite annoying to me personally. However, I liked the interactions between Fox and Brandt and Vi and Tom. It got better in the last half because I slowly started to understand the complex story. Some of the messages about love and the perks of mortality I liked. But I still didn't get many parts like the rules of the immortals game. I suppose this is wanted by the author but I simply didn't enjoy not understanding.

Um ehrlich zu sein, ganz verstanden habe ich nicht, worum es ging. Tod ist ein Gambler und die Unsterblichen spielen ein Spiel, das sie nicht gewinnen können. Volos übernimmt die Tische und will Tod zerstören. Die Lösung ist ein Sterblicher, der weiß, das alles enden muss. Volos' Motivation war mir nicht klar, ebenso wenig die Charaktere, die den Cast ausmachen. Ja, es gab Szenen, die ich mochte und ich denen ich das Gefühl hatte, eine Verbindung aufzubauen. Leider waren sie aber selten und verworren. Es wurde auch nicht ganz deutlich, was die Konsequenz wäre, würde Tod verlieren. Alles in allem nicht schlecht, aber rückblickend hätte ich in der Zeit lieber etwas anderes gelesen.

Olivie Blakes Bücher sind immer irgendwie anders und schwer zu beschreiben. Sie sind verwirrend und ein wenig philosophisch. Man merkt, dass sie mit ihren Büchern nicht nur unterhalten, sondern auch eine Message transportieren möchte, was mir bei den meisten Hypebüchern total fehlt. Und genau das finde ich ziemlich cool. Die Story wird ausschließlich von der Interaktion zwischen den Charakteren vorangetrieben und immer mehr Dinge aufgedeckt, dass es am Ende doch Sinn ergibt. Das muss man mögen. Es ist definitiv kein Buch, was ich uneingeschränkt jedem empfehlen kann. Ich mochte es, aber trotzdem hat mir etwas gefehlt. Vor allem mehr Beschreibungen, um mir irgendetwas vorzustellen, wären gut gewesen. Das Buch hat nicht viel Plot, so gut wie kein Worldbuilding, besteht beinahe nur aus Dialogen, funktioniert aber trotzdem erstaunlich gut. Allerdings ist es wohl eher nichts für diejenigen, die High Fantasy gewohnt sind. Mein Englisch hinkt ein bisschen hinterher, denn der Sprachstil ist nicht allzu einfach zu lesen und man muss an der ein oder anderen Stelle zwischen den Zeilen lesen können. Ich hoffe, dass es bald übersetzt wird. Definitiv ein Kandidat, den ich dann nochmals lesen werde. Vielleicht verschwinden dann auch noch die restlichen ??? über meinem Kopf.
4.5 Sterne! Es ist was komplett anderes und ich habe definitiv noch nie so was gelesen. Ich will nicht wirklich was vorweg nehmen, einfach weil das Buch die ganze Zeit aufbaut und immer mehr erklärt und dennoch einen komplett verwirrt lässt. Ich habe den Sarkasmus geliebt, auch wenn er gegen Ende was ernster wurde einfach weil man die Charaktere mehr verstanden hat? Also ja, ich hab's geliebt und würde es empfehlen wenn man was anderes lesen möchte!
Trocken und liebenswürdig, Untote die begeistern
Es ist genau die Mischung von Mythologie und Folklore, die ich liebe. Während die erste Hälfte ein Puzzle ohne Anleitung ist, so ist das Endbild fantastisch und meiner Meinung nach befriedigend. Emotional schöne Beziehungen und ein Humor, welcher sehr begeistert, machen dieses Buch zu einer rundum bereichernden Erfahrung.
Masters of Death was so fun and interesting. The art of humor was so good and i had no idea where the plot was going , like the whole time haha. But i really enjoyed following (mainly) Vi and Fox. The themes with immortality and mortality and what it means to be mortal and the reasons to want to live where so well portrayed. The pacing of the story and the way we jumped trough our POVs was so well done and made for a good reading flow. this was now my 4th book by olivie blake and i just love how uniquely she crafts her stories and i love that you can just tell that you are reading her story. also the way her male characters are written (?!) i highly recommend. !!! spoiler !!! i also really liked that you may think going into this book, that Vi and Fox are our romantic mcs (in a way they are) but they are not each others love interests which i thought was an interesting choice but such a good one. Something different!
