Beschreibung

Introducing an instant classic―master storyteller Neil Gaiman presents a dazzling version of the great Norse myths.
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales.
In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki―son of a giant―blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.
Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Once, when Thor’s hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman―difficult with his beard and huge appetite―to steal it back. More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir―the most sagacious of gods―is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry. The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people.
Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

More visual review here- http://storypals.net/book-report-norse-mythology-neil-gaiman/ Finally, the day has come when I decided to put my review up here on my blog. Trust me when I say this, I have been slacking on reviewing this particular book which is how now I have 4 books piled up only to be reviewed later. The reason why I am being such a dork? This book is really hard to review, I mean what do I say which is not already said? What do I add to it which will give some value to people who haven’t heard about this book already? The whole world is raving about this and of course, there are plenty of reasons why they should be, the cover is gorgeous, the author is kickass, the stories are so good that they leave you asking for more. Anyway. Because any review cannot be cut short to just this blabber, let’s do the needful and talk about what it is and talk a little about my feelings, the characters and the not to miss story. For me the fascinating part was the introduction, it did give the book such a kickstart that I wanted to devour the book as soon as possible. Neil Gaiman's introduction is where he talks about his deep fascination with the myths of the lands of the North. -- Anything passionate turns me on. :P To be honest, the book was a great read, the stories were amazing and I was introduced to Norse Mythology in a very different way, what I know is only through Marvel comics and that too film knowledge which is mostly broken. The book's narration is smoothly divided between the major deities, even though the Big Three are the focus. The storytelling is in the good, old-fashioned way. By this I mean-- The story has been retold but it didn't feel like a new voice or the characters have been modernized, the essence was there and I could feel it. Each character had their distinctive voice, making them different from each other. The book was easy to read, stories were great and nothing more for me to say.

Sehr gutes Buch!

It's like sitting around a campfire telling stories

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman is a nice book to read on the go. This was the second book I've read by Neil Gaiman and I love his writing style. Once again, I got through this book very quickly and was able to find my way into the world of the Norse gods. The stories of the strong Thor, the lovely Freya and the cunning Loki are written as you would imagine the tales in earlier times while you sit around a campfire on a warm winter's night, and as the individual stories are kept relatively short, you can easily reread them, which I will probably do, as I couldn't internalise all the names the first time through - there were just too many gods and background information for that. All in all, I would recommend it to any reader who is interested in Norse sagas and Norse gods, as it is an entertaining and interesting book to read in a short amount of time.
