Today he is a man with two missions: to pursue a cataclysmic bet against the yen and to get a haircut across town. Stalled in traffic by a presidential motorcade, a music idol’s funeral and a violent political demonstration, Eric receives a string of visitors—experts on security, technology, currency, finance and a few sexual partners—as the limo sputters toward an increasingly uncertain future.
Cosmopolis, Don DeLillo’s thirteenth novel, is both intimate and global, a vivid and moving account of the spectacular downfall of one man, and of an era.

Im Moment spekuliert er gegen den Yen. Eric hat eine Wohnung mit mehr als 40 Zimmern, einem Aquarium mit Haifisch, einen eigenen Sicherheitsdienst und eine Stretch-Limousine mit Marmor-Fußboden. In dieser Stretch-Limousine verbringt Eric den Tag, der der letzte in seinem Leben sein soll. Der Tag an dem er einen anderen Mann treffen wird, der ebenso kompromisslos lebt. In diesem Buch scheint mehr zwischen den Zeilen zu stehen als darin. Der zynische, kalt analysierende und heimatlose Eric steht symbolisch für etwas das nicht benannt wird. Doch mehr als diese vage Beschreibung konnte ich nicht aufnehmen. Die Geschichte war für mich nicht greifbar, sie zerfloss in meinen Händen bevor ich sie und sie mich packen konnte.
