A Psalm for the Wild-Built

Ich hatte eigentlich keine großen Erwartungen an diese Novelle; einzig, dass sie mir gefallen würde, da die Grundprämisse von Becky Chambers’ Geschichten immer zu sein scheint, den Leser*innen das Äquivalent einer Umarmung zu geben. In diesem Fall war die Umarmung eher der Natur von “Ich kann nicht genau nachvollziehen, was du durchlebst und wie du dich fühlst oder warum du dich so fühlst, aber ich sehe dich und du darfst dich so fühlen und bitte, bitte erzähl mir deine Gedanken, ich höre dir zu.” Doch neben dieser Umarmung ist A Psalm for the Wild-Built auch eine Antwort auf aktuelle Krisen, auf Erwerbsgesellschaft, auf Ecocriticism und umweltbewusstes Leben. Es schafft eine Zukunft, in der die Roboter und Maschinen ihre Arbeit niedergelegt und die Menschen um Freiheit gebeten haben. Die Menschen haben es gewährt und ihr Leben einfach neu aufgebaut. Ohne Roboter. Mit mehr Gemeinschaft. Kurz nachdem ich zu lesen angefangen habe, habe ich die UN-Veröffentlichung zur global water bankruptcy gelesen, die bei aktuellem Trend noch 14 Jahre sauberes Trinkwasser auf dem Planeten Erde vorhersagt. Bevor ich zu lesen begann, habe ich meinen Job gekündigt — meinen sicheren, ausreichend bezahlten Job, mitten in (oder am Anfang?) einer Wirtschaftskrise. Zu sagen, dass dieser literarische Exkurs in die Menschlichkeit und die Bedingungen des Seins zur rechten Zeit kam, ist noch untertrieben. Ich habe mich sehr gesehen gefühlt. Und umarmt. “I am scared, and I am lost, and I don’t know what to do,” sagt Dex. “You’re an animal,” sagt hingegen Mosscap. “It’s enough to simply be alive and marvel at the world. To simply be. It’s what most living things do.” Zukunftsvisionen — oder einfach fiktive, literarische Versionen einer möglichen Zukunft — sind immer voller Katastrophen, voller Verzicht und Schmerz und Leid und Lektionen, die die falschen Menschen viel zu spät gelernt haben. Becky Chambers hingegen schafft eine ruhige. Eine sich selbst genügende. Eine mehr oder weniger intakte. Eine Welt, die Ideenreichtum und das Bedürfnis nach Mehr haben kann. Allein das weckt irgendwie Hoffnung. Allein dafür möchte ich diese Novelle jedem wärmstens empfehlen. Und sie wieder lesen, wenn ich eine Umarmung und einen Tee brauche.

𝙵𝚘𝚛 𝚊𝚗𝚢𝚋𝚘𝚍𝚢 𝚠𝚑𝚘 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚞𝚜𝚎 𝚊 𝚋𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚔. Never has there been a truer dedication. "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" by Becky Chambers feels exactly like that: a break. With a cup of tea. Like you just sat down with one of your fave friends and get to pour out your heart out, no judgement, just listening. I laughed reading this, and I cried reading this. It broke me and stitched me back together at the same time. Never would I have thought that on barely 150 pages, there could be such depth. This is a story about tea. Yet it is so much more than that. It's a story about loneliness, about a sense of purpose, and about an unlikely friendship. About wisdom and joy, about pain and anxiety. The themes developed and explored in this book were just everything. From the wild and humans living in sinc with nature or... how humans are not made to live in sinc with nature and destroy it... to finding your path and feeling lost all at the same time. About how we can grow beyond our remnants and find peace in just living, if we choose to be brave enough. Dex was such a relatable character. So many of their quotes felt as if I'd expressed them. There are so many things I annotated because they truly spoke to me. The feeling of being tired, not knowing what your purpose is, pouring your heart and soul into something yet still feeling hollow. Ugh. I keep finding these books that rock me to my core. It's the same as with "Moonsoul" by Nathaniel Luscombe - I'd absolutely recommend reading both of these! All in all, this book felt like a story uncle Iroh from Avatar would tell you if you'd ask him for advice. And we all know we need an uncle Iroh in our lives. Someone calm and wise, that listens and gently pushes you to reflect on things and get back on the right path.
