I watched the show this summer and loved it. This book didn't disappoint. The show follows it almost exactly, with a few deviations and I would encourage readers and non-readers alike to read the book. It's wonderful, funny, heart-wrenching and has characters that are gonna stick with you after you turn the last page. I'm definitely going to read Truly Madly Guilty now.

Jane zieht mit ihrem Sohn in das beschauliche Örtchen Pirriwee und hofft ihrer Vergangenheit zu entfliehen. Doch schon am ersten Tag im Kindergarten steht Ziggi in Verdacht eines der Mädchen zu mobben. Eine Welle der Entrüstung wird losgetreten. Bloß gut, dass Jane unter den Eltern auch Freunde gefunden hat. Wie Madeline, deren jüngste Tochter in dieselbe Klasse geht wie Ziggi. Madeline ist zum zweiten Mal verheiratet und die Beziehung ihrer älteren Tochter zu deren neuen Stiefmutter Bonnie ist ihr ein Dorn im Auge. Am liebsten weint sie sich bei ihrer schönen Freundin Celeste aus, die ebenfalls Zwillinge in dem Kindergartenalter hat und nach außen hin alles hat was man sich vorstellen kann. Schönheit, ein Mann der sie anbetet und zwei entzückende Kinder. Doch der schöne Schein kann trügen. Jede der drei schleppt ein Geheimnis mit sich herum. Bis an einem Elternabend der Knoten platzt und all die kleinen großen Lügen ans Licht kommen. Alles beginnt mit einem Elternabend der aus dem Ruder läuft und mit einem Toten endet. Rückblickend wird erzählt, wie es zu der Katastrophe überhaupt erst kommen konnte. Ein bisschen fühlte ich mich erinnert an die Serie „Desperate Housewives“. Jede der Frauen hat ein Geheimnis, sei es Jane deren Sohn durch eine Vergewaltigung entstand und die nur schwer Vertrauen zu anderen Menschen aufbauen kann, oder Celeste die eigentlich alles hat, aber von ihrem Ehemann geschlagen wird oder Madeline, deren pubertierende Tochter ihre Jungfräulichkeit übers Internet versteigert um gegen Kinderprostitution zu protestieren, weil sie so sein will wie ihre Stiefmutter Bonnie. Hinzu kommt noch, dass man Ziggi für einen Mobber hält und die anderen Eltern bereits Petitionen für seinen Rauswurf unterzeichnen. Ich konnte von Anfang an nicht glauben, dass Zigge dahintersteckt und hatte schon eine Vermutung die sich dann auch bestätigte. Doch der Autorin gelang es mich dennoch mit dem Ende zu überraschen, da ich ehrlich gesagt keine Ahnung hatte wer eigentlich der Tote war und wie es dazu kam. Ich konnte das Buch einfach nicht aus der Hand legen und war so süchtig, dass ich überall gelesen habe wo es nur ging, ja sogar in der Schlange im Supermarkt. Diese Story ist ein schönes bissiges Beispiel was passiert, wenn Mütter zu sehr um ihre Kinder kreisen und Streitigkeiten plötzlich Dimensionen annehmen, die keiner mehr nachvollziehen kann. Ich glaube ich habe ein neue Lieblingsautorin schon lange habe ich kein Buch mehr so verschlungen wie dieses und nun gruselt mir davor Kinder zu bekommen, denn ich weiß nicht ob ich stark genug bin für die anderen Helikoptereltern.

This book was so much fun and yet heartbreaking at the same time. I love the format and the characters, even though they are not characters that I would normally like but I was so invested in them, the story, the characters. A MUST READ.
3.5 stars because it took me maybe a third of the book to get into the whole story, the characters and their backstories. Could’ve been a 4 star rating otherwise. There was also only one acceptable ending so at least I’m satisfied now that I’m finished.
Liane Moriarty's novel "Big Little Lies" has become a sensational bestseller of women's fiction in recent years, only supported by its critically acclaimed and immensely watchable HBO adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern among others (which features a) some of the best casting choices and b) one of the best cast ensembles I've ever witnessed in a book-to-film/TV adaptation). It may have been a mistake for me to read the novel only after watching the TV show, but to be honest, the adaptation was so fantastic that reading about these people's lives only enhanced the experience of getting to know their respective personal stories. "Big Little Lies" is absolutely addictive. If I hadn't already known the entire story, I probably would have turned page after page in one sitting alone, and even without this being the case, it didn't take long for me to finish the novel. The plot works brilliantly by using a very interesting formula: take the lives of several characters who appear to be so perfect and oh-so-normal from the outside, and throw them into a difficult situation in order to reveal their true characters by showing how they deal with the situations, and then reveal the dark secrets shadowing their seemingly perfect lives. It's a formula which could not have worked better, though one aspect certainly helped: the fact that the characters were so vibrant. We got to know every little shade of their souls, and even with the uncomfortable subjects which are placed at the heart of the story, it felt comforting to place oneself in their neighborhood and watch their conflict-disquieted lives unravel. Yes, it was certainly uncomfortable at times, but that was the entire point of the novel. It's the reason this book is so memorable and different in the first place. Self-centered people like the characters portrayed in Liane Moriarty's world live all around the planet. What the show did so great was to paint these women in such an interesting light that you could not help but root for them anyway. I'm definitely checking out Liane Moriarty's other books.
Es gibt Bücher, die kann man gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Liane Moriarty hat mit Big Little Lies genau das geschafft. Im Buch gibt es eine Menge Charaktere, es wird sich aber weitestgehend auf das Leben dreier Frauen konzentriert. Es geht um Intrigen, (Ehe-) Probleme, Streitereien- und um einen Todesfall. Erst im Verlauf der Story erfährt man wer überhaupt umgebracht wurde und wer dahintersteckt. Ich habe die ganze Zeit mitgerätselt und was soll ich sagen? Ich kam nicht drauf. Big Little Lies ist unheimlich clever und auch witzig geschrieben. Es hat Spaß gemacht dieses Buch zu lesen und ich kann es absolut empfehlen!
My favorite Moriarty so far. I enjoyed the complexity of the characters and the plot, and ahhh it's so hard to say anything more without spoilers.
